  • Holy cow Rand is stupid. First, under Reagan unemployment fell because the Fed cut interest rates. The fed fought inflation by jacking the fed funds rate to 20%. Second, the top rates were lowered from 90% to 70% under Kennedy and from 70% to 50% under Reagan. The top rate is currently 35% with a 15% rate on capital gains. The top 400 households paid an average effective tax rate of 18% in 2008. Look up Top 400 on IRS website. Lowering the top rates will do nothing to create jobs.

Then cut some spending by getting health care costs in line with the rest oft he developed world. If the US faced the same rate of health care inflation as Japan, we'd have a projected surplus rather than a huge deficit. Greed in the health care sector is killing the economy.

Obviously increasing all those taxes for revenue isn't fixing the deficit now is it? Well, if revenue isn't fixing it, then obviously spending is the problem.   • If we eliminated the Federal Reserve, which I think would be wonderful, but used a gold standard currency....is there even enough gold for everyone??? Can someone explain what would happen after the Fed is eliminated? The Fed could certainly be described as having an enormous global impact because the dollar is the world reserve currency.

    After all, Geigthner did say they, "had more in common that you fear." (which was a very awkward way of saying they have points of agreement in this policy debate. Sly admission of guilt?

The issue lies in the hands of those that create and push such practices. Money cannot lie, those that produce fake money can. Counterfeit money isn't evil, but the counterfeiter is. I think we are both in agreement that creating a fiat money is the wrong, but I cannot agree with the fact that a thing, or any tool to manifest evil, can be evil itself.

  • @MrSpanky242 yes ideologically, there are those that argue that when under government control, the government would use a central bank to control the market the way that they wanted to see fit and historically have loaned themselves money out for wars...but when independent of government and politics, the argument is made that a central bank works on behalf of the people rather than being controlled by government. Tony Blair fought to get the Bank of England independent and did in '97

  • Geithner is either an idiot or a liar (or perhaps both). The Fed can change the discount rate whenever it wants to, thereby making it cheaper for banks to borrow from the Fed in increase their individual reserves. More cash = more loans at lower interest rates.

    Of course you don't control what interest rate Wells Fargo or Bank of America charges, but people like you are more than able to manipulate those rates indirectly. Goodness, a basic macro econ text book can explain this.
