Oh, one more thing you might find interesting, is that in hundreds of millions of years, all of our dead orginisms will break down, just like the dinosaurs did, and eventually we will become fossil fuels ourselves... perhaps for another society like in our world today?!
Even more mind bending.. If that society discovered those fossil fuels we create, would they use them the same way and make the same mistakes?!
None of this takes climate change into account though of course ;)
@moonsugar1 A programme I once watched speculated on future evolution of the world, it suggested that in 200 million years time a land-based species descendant from Squid (as they've survived countless mass extinctions) could become as intelligent as humans are today. That would be enough time for them to harvest human oil from underground and potentially repeat history. Ironic if you've ever eaten Squid or Calamari :)
If you add up ALL the renewable sources of energy, Solar, Tidal Wind, etc, today it counts for 7% of the worlds power supply. Nuclear power is about 8% and in decline. Oil, even now, counts for 36%. Fossil fuels altogether count for 86%. This is estimated, from the EIA.
The really sad thing is there IS enough solar energy available to replace oil, but in order to implement that, we'd have to use alot of the energy we've already used to gprovide it.
@spinosaurus60 That's true. The problem is if China decides to take the sampson option, which is esentially to nuke everything it can before the missile shield is fully functional. So despite the assured own destruction it would at least devastate it's enemies especially the US. If China understands that there is no way other than it's destruction it will choose the path to take everyone down it can before it goes down too. That's the logic of war.
Peak oil will result in the depopulation of the planet by 2-3 bln. people. The only question is who will be on the surviving side, which will be determined on the battle field of WW3 which is to come 2018-2020. That timespan is predicted to mark the closure of the technological gap needed by the nucleary primacy option by the US against the strategic forces of China and India WITHOUT having to deal with payback in kind.
Oh, I really wish gas would cost at least 6$/gallon...that would definitely decrease consumption of oil... I mean here 1 litre= 0.3.785411784 U.S gallon
Which means that here in Finland one gallon costs around 7$...just think about it....
@keaien You wish for gas to be $6 a gallon. You wish will be granted sooner than you think. Be careful what you wish for. You will get it. You will also get the side effects. Learn to grow food. That wil be your biggest concern. Really.
it shocks me that none of these fools have even mentioned non oil energy souces, renewable sources like WIND power and SOLAR power, etc. it just seems like the INTELLIGENT option!?

There will be die off, maybe war etc, although we can only really speculate.
But It will not be the end of humanity.
We will be survived by the third world, and those amazing undiscovered tribes in the amazon rainforest that dont even know what fossil fuels are.
Im seriously considering moving to a more 'natural' part of the world.
I've seen and educated myself enough to know we're not coming out of the next century well.
If anyone would like to discuss this with me more feel free ;)

We've already basically commited suicide.

Two words for why there is no energy conservation: vested interest.
