For whatever reason the rear tires failed to start spinning (trans brake switched on, wrong gear selected, etc..) causing the torque converter to absorb all of the energy the engine was producing. The fluid inside the torque converter quickly overheated, expanded and split the converter, spilling the flaming ATF on on the ground. Happens quite a bit in drag racing, though not usually during the burnout.

@fenderusa10 thats a pretty good question....it sort of looks like the pass side exhaust pipe blows out a cloud of smoke as the drivers side motor compartment pops..im thinking the engine let go...not sure...i am sure there wasnt any smoke from a burnout tho..just by the sound of the motor and the lack of smoke until the pop...the way that thing went up too,im thinking the oil went everywhere and caught on fire...but hey..what do i know..i wasnt there ...lol.
