There is so much fiction mixed with fact it is difficult to know the truth. Even the written history may not be truth as it is always manipulated as today. To say that Jane & Guilford were too inexperienced and naive. They could have avoided death & spared England much misery had they had a plan. She knew the classics and the past but was ignorant of her present. She needed to consolidate her power win the army and population. Then make her changes.
two silly questions 1. Was she suppose to be the English version of Joan of Arc 2. In nine days did she have time do all that_ clothes, shillings etc?
A Queen as social reformer in a vulgar modern sense? This is most irregular! One should not try to project one’s silly wishes into the past: Queen Jane was the puppet of the powerful protestant nobles, who attempted the coup to install her; had they prevailed she might have developed some level of personal power but at that stage she would have not have done anything without the advise of those nobles and was certainly unable to order any of this foolish juvenile dream of modern times.
@FireEyedMaidOfWar Actually, I believe contemporary historians have found that the Victorian take on the Nine Days' Queen was actually more accurate than they had thought. Jane was an extremely well versed and knowledgeable woman for her time, perhaps even more so than Elizabeth Tudor, and she definitely knew it. She took a very active role in what limited power she executed in the time that she was on the throne. Puppet or not, Jane was devoted utterly to the reform of Christianity and England.
@VinDieselEngine: Being smart, educated and intelligent does not necessarily mean that one cannot be a puppet; and Jane was both very young and – unlike Queen Christina of Sweden – not educated as future queen and therefore ignorant in the workings of warfare and state affairs and so utterly dependent on her advisors and guardians; had she prevailed she might have become a sovereign ruler but at the time of her usurpation she could not have acted alone.
@cravilicious Anne Boleyn was actually quoted as ordering that Mary serve baby Elizabeth as a nursery maid and also that others in charge of the nursery should feel free to slap Mary and abuse her verbally
I love how she doesn't feed into being royal bullshit and the power that comes with it shed rather be no one than powerful and corrupt I especially love how when she realizes she and her husband are their in laws pawns to rein n exploit everything further instead of letting their parents who basically sold their souls have their way they tell them to shove their greed up their ass n they take advantage of their situation to rule as righteously just as they saw possibly fit they where pure heart
sorry i don't know much about this history so please tell me : was Jane the best queen of England? because apparently she looks rather innocent, but she thinks a lot about her people.. is that true?
Well, this movie, great as it is, embellishes the role of Jane quite a bit. She only ruled for nine days, so no real record could have been compiled as to her brief "reign". She was also a fundamentalist Protestant, much like the born again ones of today, and her hatred of Catholics (and even mainline Protestants like Elizabeth) probably would have resulted in religious persecutions. She was supposedly a very kind and gentle soul, but then again, so was Mary I.
Can someone please tell me, how did Jane really go down in history? Was her life really as kinda and unselfish and wise as this movie? I ver much hope so, because honestly this makes me feel that somewhere there must be poeple who care and are willing to act on there feelings, rather that just careing or acting.
@mrsmichasnape Jane was an innocent pawn in her family schemes to have her family rule. Their father convince a seriously ill Prince Edward to pass the succession to Jane instead of Mary and Elizabeth. In Henry's will he stated the that the succession will be Edward, Mary and then Elizabeth. Mary however got an army together and arrested Jane. Although Jane was just a innocent pawn her family had no business to reign over England.
@ImADrWhoAddict Elizabeth? She was no threat! Edward wanted to keep her in, but Jane's dad told Edward that he could not keep one in without the other, so he removed both.
@Jamestopboy Yes I know she wasn't really. And it was Janes father-in-law who had power to persuade the king. They weren't sure about her religious persuasion and to pass over Mary they had to pass over Elizabeth on the same grounds. She was called to court to most probably be arrested so she couldn't protest but 'feigned illness?' That bit I'm not certain about
I have actually seen and held one of the four prop coins they struck for this movie. It was very interesting to read Regina Jane I. I know that in reality the Royal Mint would not have had time to strike a shilling for Jane's all to breif reign. Even so it was still very thrilling to touch it.. The collector that had the coin had it in a case very much like the one that is presented to Jane in the movie along with a screen caputure of the close up of Helena holding the coin and smiling..
I don't know how accurate this part is but not letting her father, (An experanced general) take comand of her forces ensured her downfall. Guilford should have relised this. Xfilequeen you are partly right as long as the poor framers were Catholic. if not they were burned alive.
No matter how bad Marys life may have been she did as queen bring the Inquisition to England thus ensuring the down fall of the Roman cathoc church in England to this day. Bloody Mary was a tyrant.
@babybookworm003 how can it be treason if EVI specifically ordered it. And why was Jane's mother not made Queen instead - the line passing to her daughter who may have had a male heir - She also had never been branded illegitimate as had Bloody Mary and Elizabeth.
to understand why mary did what she did when she came to the throne you have to know her history. For almost all of her childhood she was the treasured daughter of the king and then all of a sudden she's a bastard. and her father who she loved tosses her mother to the side like a piece of garbage. then when elizabeth is born she has to be her servant and change her diapers and bow down to the woman who destroyed her life. (AB) you can imagine that over time she became a bit crazy
@CaraMelProDuckShuns well she didn't change the diapers really as they had servants for that and its true that she was hurt but Mary was absolutely self righteous and so uptight i bet she had a stick up her ass but that does't give her the right to be crazy cause Elizabeth too was tossed aside and her mother beheaded by her father yet her reign as queen came to be known as the golden age well as Mary came to be known as bloody Mary
@CaraMelProDuckShuns Okay so Mary had the right to have daddy issues and she never changed Elizabeth's diapers but Elizabeth too was tossed aside and her mother beheaded by her father but her reign was known as the golden age well as Mary's reign was one of the bloodiest in england thus the name blood Mary. lets face it, she was just a self righteous bitch with a stick up her ass. Ask phillip. lol
There is a huge difference. Mary was a young adult when all this happened to her mother, while Elizabeth was only two and a half when Anne Boleyn was executed, and thus had no recollection of her. Elizabeth was never treated as shabbily as Mary was by their father, and he purposely kept her from getting married to the point that she was a 30 year old spinster when he finally died. Then, during Edward's reign, Mary was persecuted for her faith by the brother whom she doted on.
@CaraMelProDuckShuns oh yes i know and ubderstand bloody mary tudors personal history well- i think youll find that in any court of law a painful childhood is no excuse for cruel evil and self interested MURDER of the most ghastly manner-yes sge was driven crazy and it no defense thousands of nobles were in global courts throughout history were ubject to such harshness and while many reacted the same way as evil mary tudor many did nit-she was sick fantatical cruel evil self interested nut!
Jane thought about her country first; no more branding, giving the poor their lands back, giving riches to the poor ... Bloody Mary would have never done that for the people of England.
Mary restored the monastaries...that was where the people farmed. Also the monastaries had always taken care of the poor, so by restoring them she was helping.
mary is branded bloody mary not for the number of burnings but the nature of them to have so many people burned for not believing in the catholic faith was a drastic action its because there were so many burned in this cause that she is pointed out even though henry VIII ordered 72000 executions
Her mother is a bitty. Jane should have taken her out and had her beaten like her mother did to her. Especially talking out of disrespect to the new queen.
a bunch of other monarchs did that too. mary is only known for it because she was a woman which at the time made it somehow more heinous to everyone than when men burned people at the stake
The difference is time span. Mary killed many during her limited reign i.e. the rate of killing was much higher. That's why the executions under Mary seemed like a mass-murder more than anything else.
It was felt like a mass murder. Some of her councillor were against the burnings, so were her husband and her husband's priest. They tried to persuade them but Mary did not change her mind.

No it's becuase most monarchs were men. There aren't as many queens in history.
She had people burned at the stake to return catholism, her one true religon, to England.
Most manarchs had people burned, yes. But Mary had this crusaid, inwhich hundreds were captured and burned to death.
