... there are times when you know, not just believe, but know. You don't have to guess, or wish, or hope... you simply know. For me, when I here this blessed woman sing this blessing from God, through her, to the world... Every time, and it never fails, when I hear the angels sing this song through her... This is when I know, simply know, that God is... That God was, is and will always be...
my name is Mary, and i stumbled upon this bawling my eyes out at 3 am,by songs end i was smiling and singing loud. thank you Jesus for miss miss Frankiln
i have heard other versions of this song and i have enjoyed them as well but nobody sings this with the soul that aretha franklin does.god bless you aretha franklin!!!!
It all boils down to having the passion for God in your soul. Ms. Franklin was raised in the church. When she sings you can feel it trickle down your spine. Her heart is in it; you can hear it. This woman was and is blessed with a tremendous gift. I wouldn't even try to compare another singer to her.
i listen to this while i walk to work in the morning, and i can't help but stop and wave my hands. some times i want to stop in the middle of the sidewalk and jump and cry and scream, "Oh my Lord, Yes My Lord".
This is worthy of one of those "pew clearing, arm flailing, hollering and screaming" shouts. Y'all know what I'm talking bout...they used to call it "getting happy"!
It's just perfect. Absolutley flawless in it's entirety. I've listened to this over and over and I can't find one wrong note. I would give ANYTHING to have something come out of me like that.
if she wanted to? LOL Anyone can sing a gospel song. But singing Gospel is different. And this is something mariah can't do.I've seen mariah TRYING to sing Gospel, and it sucked.but anyway, I don't wanna start a fight about who can sing Gospel and who can't.

Well I am not trying to fight I am just saying. Well anyway if she couldnt sing gospel which she can. She is still the most selling female recording artist of all time. And the queen of pop.
Man, listening to the other examples of this song by various artist lead me to say that not one of them can touch Aretha on this song. The right pitch, diction and timing is impeccable. Hearing her still sends chills down my back, especially when she calls Lazarus name.
Aretha works this song. Even if you don't share her faith, you have to be moved by the way she sings this song. And the end when the background singers work that harmony of ooooos...this song is like going to church!
Rev C.L. Franklin's baby girl, from the amen corner of New Bethel church Linwood at Virgina Park in the epi center of creative genius, Detroit, My My My my my my my Sweet Lord.
I remember when this album came out. It put to rest all those foul rumors about Aretha was singing Soul music because she couldn't compete with the Clara Wards and Mahalia Jacksons of Gospel. Ha!! All hail the queen.
Although I am not a Christian, --though i wen thru a phase many years ago. I have nevertheless sang along with this and all other tracks on Amazing Grace. Know why? Cause the SOULLLLL is why. When you get into with her soul it gives you feelings of real power. and this helped me through some hard times i tell ya!"!
Since 1972 when the album came out, I couldn't even SIT and listen to this one without sweating! " He got up walkin' like a natural man , OH YES HE DID! ...Oh Mary don't you weep, go on home and don't you and your sister moan..." As far as I'm concerned when the Edwin Hawkins Singers debut album was joined on the market by Aretha's masterpiece two-record set, every white person who ever recorded gospel music needed to publicly apologize.
@dvlaries i don't know. elvis did a pretty awesome job and so did loretta lynn. and yes they were influenced by the black music that they heard when they grew up, but they did a pretty good job.
My favorite song EVER. Aretha not only sings the life into this song but she tells the story and you can picture it. Who needs a music video when you have a story teller like this?
Inez Andrews and Aretha Franklin: The only two that has ever done this song true justice. In my humble opinnion.
Keentes even if her voice is not what it was, she has left a body of work no one will ever match, including the 2 great legends you mentioned in your comment.
Same for me, I got this record as soon as it came out, forget about it, it doesn't get any more down to it than this!...music that can wake the dead...Nothing bad can be said about 'Rehta, sorry, Spiritentities is right on...
One thing...I've been waiting and looking around for years for the film of this miraculous gospel session...one was definitely made, but where is it? Anyone have any clues?
I agree with you. Is it on DVD or VHS anywhere? I would love to have this live performance on either. I can't imagine what it would be like to watch it. I would've LOVED to had been there with the LEGENDS like Rev. James Cleveland, Clara Ward and her mother Gertrude Ward. It would've been PRECIOUS MEMORIES in every sense of the word.
I've been trying to find out for years. It's just unbelievable that it hasn't been released. I found this from a blog about the late, great Sydney Pollack: "Aretha's manager kept holding up Warner Bros. for more money than they could afford, so it was never released. I hope it will be someday because like the work of Bach, it proves the power of the spirit to make magical music." Seems it would be a win-win situation for everybody, a film of one of the greatest musical experiences ever...
I bought this album when it was released, a thousand years ago! It was extraordinary then...it has stood the test of time! Nobody can tell me that there are artists today, who can match 'Retha! She always was...and, always will be...in a class by herself; a complete joy, and outstanding musician.
She has earned that respect of all of us who realize and appreciate longevity. Please be careful of the critical analysis. Sista Re Re hs been singin' for over 50 years! Perhaps her weight should be considered for health reasons but doubtful if her voice is affected. By the way, would you like someone to tell you to go away after you've put time and effort for many years into you love? LOL
I recently purchased this CD and did not know she sang this song!! Lawd Hammurcy when i heard it!!! Boy did she Sang this one!! she truly is a Gospel Lengend!!!!!!

yes, you can feel so much in her singing here, it is still fresh for me to hear it 35 years later, because her "feeling" in the song was not contrived, but something very real. It is impossible to miss.
Not a bad groove for gospel. I particularly dig it because of how well the choir and Aretha do the call and response with splendor with the piano urging on.
