How do I vote this Video as the Best Informative Video on YT?
I gave it an "Incredible" reaction vote.
Wish you would make a .44 Mag test and...well...everything else too.
At least in handguns.
I need a .38 Special round that will make my S&W 642 a "Stopper".
My .44 Mag Super Blackhawk already is but it's not a Carry gun...unless you want a suitcase size lump in your pants. (which would be ok if it wasn't all gun).
***wanders off thinking about a suitcase size lump in my pants***
Excellent comparative test. 1015 fps ain't bad for .38 Special 158 gr out of a 'Snubby'. Great if it was consistent. I can live with that if the bullet configuration allows it to expand. I am a .38 Special shooter and I shoot a shitload of the Walmart White Box ammo. No problems. Cor-Bon makes .38 Special ammo that "Promises" at least 1000 fps. Never tried it. You have to remember that all 'Snubbys" are Belly Guns. Ram it into a perps gut and let fly. No loss of energy from 1in away.
This was a very good video. I'd like to see how some of the more daring handloads perform on a snubnose platform, though. From an article in the late 60's-early 70's, I read that 'Skeeter' Skelton swore by a 148-grain hollow base wadcutter bullet seated backwards and long in a .38 Special case over 5.0 grains of Unique as an effective snubnose load. I wouldn't recommend this load just yet, though. Different guns respond differently to different load/powder/bullet combinations.
Highly informative. Thank you for sharing your findings. Even if a guy carries/shoots .38's 90% of the time, it would be very nice to be able to gain that extra 200 ft.lbs of energy if you decide to carry this as a personal defense weapon. Also, .357 chambering is nice so you can load up some heavy solids when you're in bear country.
Great BUT... I'd really like to see you compare an actual 4" barrel revolver's velocities back-to-back with a snub. Everything you posted compared snubs to "Factory" numbers. I'd rather see real-world numbers. Two revolvers...shot the same day...same conditions...same chrono...same box of ammo. THAT would be one awesome test. Does anyone you know own a 4" GP100 that you could borrow?
I'd like to put in a request for Gold Dot 125 gr .357 comparison. Thanks!
I have a very nice .357 Magnum master sheet I put on IGoogle. I am in search of more Chrony data but can't find much. You have some good info here if I can get it from you in a table form. E-mail me and we can share jesse112270@yahoo.com
Thanks for this. Definitely the most deceptive ammo for .357 mag is the hornady critical defense. It has kick similar to the 110gn winchester jhp (weak). The box states velocity as 1500 or something close, but further research shows this is out of 8" barrel! I carry the Remington 125gn .357 UMC (cause they had the most kick for me so felt powerful).
damn thanks for making this video! I bought a 6-shot 2" 357mag with intent to carry and your video has really helped me choose what loads to use! I think i'm going to see if my gun shop has some of the 125gr Speers. I am amazed that the 125gr rounds have the same listed velocity as my .40S&W ammo!
which one chronograph you have used in this video and one thing more could please tell me about an instrument which can determine the pressure in barrel i mean i want to use it basically for reloading my 12g shots for increase the powder level according to my gun barrel pressure level
After watching this I made some changes to my carry load. The Remington .357 Magnum 125 grain SJHP load is quite awesome and after some research I found out that Remington's R357M1 load is the equivalent to the legendary Federal 357B load, so of course the most street proven loading is now in my SP101. 1200+ fps out of a 2.25" SP101 is impressive! Thanks!
Thanks for the tip "Doc". This was another excellent video with crisp clear HD photography and sound. I really got a good feel for the SP 1-101 and the different loadings. I'm leaning towards a .38+P loading as I think I'll be able to recover quicker between shots and the lesser recoil as compared to the .357. I plan to wring out both rounds anyway to make a final decision on a CCW load.
good video. I'm looking to get a small revolver for self-defense. I'm thinking .357 snub, .38 snub or a Taurus Judge 2". If anyone has any facts or opinions on these, please let me know. I want something cheap, accurate up to 20ft. and able to stop something that's 200+lbs.
@ScoutsNOA Well it was only about -5 at the time we were shooting, but we'd been outdoors that morning when it was -13! kinda cold. Thanks for watching!
For anyone owning a snub nose or wanting to get an idea of actual numbers they can sling bullets with, this is a must see, thanks for the time you put in to make this happen!
Good information! How does this fare against longer barrels (or is the factory data for longer barrels)? There's a significant loss, it seems, some more than others. But definitely acceptable at the ranges we're talking about with snub-noses.
@DemonHide Factories test with 4" barrels typically. Yes, most of the energy that is expressed in a snubby is still very usable at self defense ranges (7 yards). Thanks for the comment.
Great video man, I love my snubbie Taurus model 85ch, they are great little guns. From the looks of your data it appears some of the manufactuers are fudging on the numbers, unless they are shooting them out of pistols with longer barrels
It's good seeing someone doing this.. I would suggest doing the same test in the summer to show how temp. can affect muzzle Vel. (some powders will shoot different with temp changes more than others)
I'd rather carry +P 9mm or +P+ 9mm in a controllable M&P9mm than this. 18 rounds at your finger tips

why was it you think that the first shot from each string seemed to be fastest ?

Have you chrono'd any loads from Buffalo Bore?

@xJasterx Seriously, 415 ft/lbs out of that short barrel! Who says a .357 snubby doesn't pack a punch! Thanks for watching.

Great Stuff!
I knew I lost velocity with my Ruger SP101(2.25" 357) but, I did not expect it to lose THAT much.
Especially with the expensive Gold Dot that you pointed out.
That ammo is what I have been using for concealed carry.
Looking forward to more testing down the road form you.
Thanks again...It was very kind of you to share what you have learned with the rest of us!
