@antoniostrohs Thanks for the heads up on Will. I could detect some of that unique voice..I had wondered what he was doing with himself as an adult. It's good to hear all kinds of music, isn't it?
Yes, the movie Matewan was based on the coal wars of Mingo County in Southern WV. Wonderful movie, and one of my favorites. I grew up about four miles from the little town of Matewan.
I thought so. One of my all time favorite movies also. Hometown Louisville boy Will Oldham played Danny the son of the boarding house operator. He is now a musician and you can find his tunes on Youtube..
I love the way you put the photos in sequence with the lyrics. Im an Appalachian artist myself, and I respect the way of life and beauty of Eastern Ky where I also call my home.
Born and raised in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains, and proud of it! This style of music is bred into us. I first heard this song on my car radio and had to pull off to the side. Six or so minutes of pure heaven. Patty is the Best!! From Mingo Co. WV.
"No one ever knew there was there coal in them mountains, 'til a man in Northeast arrived wavin' hundred dollar bills sayin', 'I'll pay for your minerals'" - The same song of Harlan County coal can be sung today for fracking. People should never stop singing. People should never forget atrocities committed in the name of a profit.
@ihateusernames302 You ASSUME too much! I met him a couple years before he commited suicide! Yes he made mistakes in his life, noone is perfect. Get over yourself. Eveyone is entitled to thier own opinion of him. Did you ever take the tme to talk to him? You might have learned something if you did. Im sure you have your own skeletons in the closet. What will folks think of you when you are dead and gone?
My husband got to work 3 weeks underground and he got laid off due to cut backs..but every day he tries to go back..I never seen him happier then when he worked underground..it brought alot of joy to his life
I left East Tennessee when I was 18. Now I'm 55 and want to go back. My family is still there. If I had stayed, I had my choice of coal mines, truck driving, textile mill or moonshining...None of which sounded appealing. I earned my education and would like to go back and help others to find their way to an education and hopefully a better life. If the government leaves us one.
Obama signed NDAA for approval yesterday. Another erosion of rights was included within. So they'll likely leave us our lives, but they won't leave us our peace of mind. I'm pretty damned paranoid about even typing this message, as if it's construed as the musings of a potential domestic terrorist, I could be jailed for life. These are scary, depressing times.
That's a nice set of pictures for this song. Patty does a very good version of the great song by Darrell Scott.

You really put together an inspired video to this heartbreaking song. I think Patty's
recording is the best, but Darrell Scott's version is really good too, and it's amazing
he could write such a moving folksong in our time. Thanks so much for your video!
