to melbright100...I am simply making the observation that Mick has some sort of wonderful ability to sound (what I, and probably many others) perceive as American sounding. Certainly this is the intended effect. Much of what he sings is in the style of the American blues. There are certain songs where he sounds more British (like "Lady Jane" or "Too Much Blood"). In "Performance" you could see how he would switch immediately from talking in a British accent to singing in a American style.

Some have commented here that Mick's performance in this scene is substandard. I disagree. I'm not an actor or a professional critic, but the standard by which we judge acting is whether or not it seems like an actor acting or it like the behavior of a real-life person. Here we see "Luther" proposing to a woman who rejects him, treating his proposal (and him) as a joke. The character's painful attempt to hide his profound humiliation with a smile seems quite real and poignant.
