My teacher played this for the class so we'd have a 'debate' & have a ground point to talk about whether we're for or against slavery & woman's rights. This was probably the best thing I have ever heard.
This speech is more fun and perhaps powerful when read in a sassy, Southern dialect. The original account of this speech varies significantly from the historically popular "Ain't I a Woman." Sojourner Truth grew up in New York and spoke Dutch until age 9, so she didn't have a Southern dialect. For this reason, I think Kerry Washington's version of the speech is more historically accurate. Although, she read the popular version of the speech she didn't try to read like a Southern born slave.
had 2 check this out but honestly she did a poor job alfre woodard n cicely tyson both did a wonderful job but i didnt feel any real emotion in kerry version

And I actually think that the way she read it was very...high schoolish ...kind of amateur and not theater major a-list actress at all. I felt that for her to be the big movie actress that she I expected her to actually do the accent and sound and read it like Sojourner would have -she didn't do any of that, she just used her own, natural reading voice which actually defeats the purpose. U should hear Ciecly Tyson do this.

Kerry Washington brought wit and humor to this piece. It's sassy, and even though it was written long ago, it's timeless and still very current and relavent. Why would Kerry do it like Sojourner? That defeats the purpose of hearing someone new do it, or else we can just listen to Sojourner do it.
Anyway, Kerry is a goddess, and a damn good actress.
Anyone who hasn't seen "The People Speak" should really make the effort...this is just one of many outstanding performances (Danny Glover's Frederick Douglass is pretty cool too). Give it a look.

It was good but not or powerful. Sorjourner Truth was powerful and strong, and had great depth. I think she missed the heart of the speech. The language is funny and powerful because of Ms. Truth not Kerry.
