Those were stock rods!!.... 580hp at the wheels is HUGE for the stock rods!

@marek0086 not really huge for a stock rod, its huge for stock rod bolts. You cant just throw that much horsepower at stock fasteners and expect things to hold together. People put these numbers to stock rods and they hold just fine, the only difference is they use better rod bolts that don't stretch and spit out the rod. Either way, it is the builders fault, you don't build an engine right at the edge of blowing up, you build it to take more than you are giving it.

@marek0086 people put 600 to the stock rod with upgraded fasteners and it will take a lot more abuse than 2 dyno runs before blowing, and when something does go wrong, it won't be a rod coming through the side of your block. It's really a simple and relatively cheap way to eliminate one of the biggest problems of these motors.

@marek0086 340hp is very conservative. I wouldn't put 600hp to a stock rod, but I have seen it done, and it worked great. I have an sr20 with tomei internals in my Datsun 510 and at 8psi I make 387hp at the wheels with a stock rod, albeit a pretty much unused rod to start. sr20's are pretty bulletproof if you build them correctly. The thing I don't understand is why you would put that much power to it without using proper parts, then again there might have been an unseen problem already.

@marek0086 I have a feeling this engine was just slapped together and over boosted with the wrong internals. A lot of people are reliably getting 400+ on stock rods and pistons, but they are likely using almost new parts. The condition of your internals obviously plays a major role and who knows how many miles this lower end had. Some shops will give you lower numbers to save their asses (and that is respectable) but the real numbers are usually more if done properly, although a little unsafe.

Depending if shards of Metal got into the Oil Pump then you would need a new pump as well.. that's something you don't want to see is a rod going threw the side of your block... Besides it was probably his fault anyhow.. you see how Dirty that OIL was.. If you are doing Dyno Computation you would think you would Change the Oil to new.. That engine blowing could of been saved just buy having good clean oil..

Valve float is when the valve doesnt have enough time to close before the piston moves to top dead center and the piston can smack the valve causing your engine to fuck up. valve float wont cause the motor to throw a rod. Bad rod bearins or the motor seizing would cause a rod to break.
