Shame he mentions dead currencies because otherwise you could still use this exact footage to perform the trick today (unless they're rather media savvy and notice thats its distinctly 90s).
I think it was the same card they used on their gravestone for the episode of Bullshit about Death... not sure though, been awhile since I've seen it.
@LordCustard Apparently they constantly use it because of how easily it shows up on TV. Or at least that's how it began, now it may just be a "thing."
so is the whole point of this trick, so just invert the "7" cards so when they count to the 7th it will be the 3? wont they relise that the first card (penn's one) is different to the the card teller saw (3 clubs?)
I did this to my dad years ago. I recorded the entire show, watched it day later, and realized the importance of having it all recorded. Then my dad came home from work, and I told him I recorded a cool thing on the news today. Oh, and by the way, wanna see a card trick? (I was into card tricks back then, so it wasn't suspicious. Hehe).
It doesn't seem to work with "Channel 4 News". It works better with an American local news item, as they are more likely to break into a report for the "special report" (i.e. "this just in, is this your card"). I am only saying this because Channel 4 News wouldn't usually break into its reports.
He puts the three of clubs on top, then asks them to pick a number between 1 and 10. He then Demonstrated taking that many cards off the top of the deck.
Then he puts the pile back on top of the deck, thus moving the card that was at the top to the card they will choose when they re count the cards off the top themselves.
its called a force- the 3 was on top when he began counting to 7 (Penn was "demonstrating" to his victim how to count to 7), so its also the 7th card from the top when Teller counts to 7 by himself. Try it, you'll see.

Sadly, this trick doesn't work anymore as the French Franc and the Deutsch Mark have been switched for the Euro.

I've pulled it off several times. People are cattle, but you just have to be a cattle driver.

The 3 of clubs must be their favourite card.

@LordCustard : It's also easy to identify even from afar.
mistervader 1 year ago
@LordCustard They use the 3 of clubs because it's the easiest card to identify on television.

@LordCustard Basically because it's easily visible and distinct to the audience and cameras when on stage and ISN'T obvious like the ace of spades.
