I'm convinced that there were no planes used other than fly-by planes. Using planes would have introduced many more variables and therefore more things that could have gone wrong. It's clear that much of the footage from 911 has been tampered with or fabricated outright.
The plane strike footage is ridiculous when taking into account the fact that the outer cladding was made from steel beams and not ONE piece of the plane, of any significance, can be seen falling away.

I believe it was staged. The firemen look so stilted as if they are waiting for the director to direct them as they "check a gas line". Also, the camera panning is way too perfect.
