this must be the only engine that an be given the title as one of the decisive "weapons" of WW2 without it how would the bale of Britain had turned out even if the RAF won that very decisive battle how many Lancasters n other bombers would a been lost over germany without the Merlin powered Mustang fighter plane? RR also had the First Reliable Jet engine in the world used on the famous Mig 15 n Saber fighters in korea but what an amazing engine to OWN

Why? They had the very powerful Daimler-Benz DB601 and 603 engines, with fuel injection at a time Rolls Royce were still using carburettors. The Germans soon learned to exploit the weakness of the Rolls Royce engined fighters to splutter in negative G-force rapid dives, with fuel injection in the engines the Germans didn't have this problem.

If im not mistaken this is my dads engine, he rebuilt it along with the guy stood in the blue overalls in the pic, my dads had cancer and been ill for a while so the other guys been taking it to shows. Where my dad lives, if he fires the engine up and gives it some welly, the trees 150 metres away are pretty much stripped of their leaves, its sodding awesome!

That is about as absurd a comparison you could possibly make. Talk about comparing apples with oranges.

Also in the end it's also what is most commercially viable, and seeing as fuel prices are rapidly rising (for obvious reasons) that's perhaps not so strange. Like it or not THINGS CHANGE, and if you don't adapt you go extinct like the dinosaurs. This has been true since the beginning of life on Earth and applies to humans too.

Who knows what power out they may have ended up with if they didn't start making jet engines instead.

@fardreaming I think the answer is in the likes of current high-revving engines of today's super-cars. Take the extreme like the bugatti veyron with 1000-1200HP from an 8 litre engine for example.. With improved materials and subsequently better cooling mechanisms just imagine what a modern Merlin would be like!

The likes of the P51, P38, Spitfire are all fantastic aircraft and each faught a vital role in WWII. The V12 Merlin has a lovely deep rumble.

You have to admit that the Merlin has the most incredible noise of any engine - ever. Used in the Spitfire, Hurricane, P51, Lancaster, Mosquito (among others). It was, i believe, the engine that made the Mustang the plane it finally evolved into. Peviously being seen as being underpoweed when using the Allison engine.

@69CRUZR You can see that there is no reverse pitch blade while the endine is stopped, and even if there was, since it's a 3 blade prop, it would cause it to be massively unbalanced and cause the crank shaft to vibrate wildly. You can also see a lot of air mass blowing against the people standing on the road behind it.

Wrong in this case since most of these ground-running engines are made of time-expired parts that can't be certified for flight anymore. One of these running Merlins was actually dug out of the ground from crash and was carefully rebuilt over several years.
