although, I should add that in a realistic situatioin, if you can carry 3 items, you can carry 5 just as easily... the contest would have been fun, and demonstrating resourcefulness and skill is always a good thing, but it wasn't really intended to demonstrate that you only need to carry three items.
I should also add that I have a great deal of respect for Dave and his accomplishments, but I don't believe in gurus and I am not a follower of any man, regardless of whether or not he is famous.
We basically agree... In an emergency I would prefer to have these specific items because of the speed in which I can erect a shelter, start a fire and maintain my clean water supply. I agree with your asessment, except that I always have cordage in my clothing and boots. (more on this in the next video) I also think that it's best to have a cooking vessel AND a water storage vessel so that you can boil water or cook food without first having to empty your canteen. Thus the canteen AND cup.
good job, thanks for posting.

I unfortunately missed Dave's contest but if I hadn't missed it I would have used:
1. My Becker bk-2
2. My canteen cup
3. Mag block firestarter
Of course, his rules stated that you can use your clothing and parts of it as well so that means I would have had use of my belt and boot laces too.

we use firesteel because, we will know we can always get a fire started with it, and it will make many fires, if done right.

I think you're right... but I think that there's a certain romance to using a firesteel that isn't there when you "flick a bic"
