  • I'm glad the Jets are back! Winnipeg does deserve it's team back. I think this was the greatest moment for the Winnipeg Jets franchise. Now with Winnipeg back in the NHL hopefully one day we can add Stanley Cup Champions to Winnipegs legacy.

  • what is that shit

  • I hope Hartford doesn't get a team they were terrible only winning one playoff series in there history

  • I wish a few teams would break away from the NHL and form a new WHA. I know that this is a pipe dream and would never happen for many different reasons... but one can dream!

  • Does anyone know where I can find the roster of the 1978/79 Jets?

  • Dave Semenko—Disco Dave? Hah hah hah.

  • Bring back the WHA, rather have that than the crappy NHL.

  • @vexacon NHL is better even though the NHL is in an era where it tends to suck cuz of Gary Bettman but NHL is still better and the modern day ppl will tell ya No WHA!

  • @vexacon you sir do not know good hockey

  • Hartford winnipeg and quebec deserve teams

  • BRING THE NHL BACK TO THE 'PEG!!!!!!!!

  • The Oilers and Jets were moving to bigger and better things after 1979

  • The Edmonton Oilers went on to much bigger and better things as they put together an NHL Dynasty in the 80's

  • GO JETS GO! GO JETS GO! GO JETS GO! SAY IT WITH ME! 3 TIME AVCO CUP CHAMPS THE WINNIPEG JETS!!!

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • Atlanta should move to Winnipeg.Other teams like Florida and Tampa Bay are either successful or have a good fan base

  • Winnipeg Jets - Returning 2010/11!!!! Southern Ontario and Quebec City will follow.

  • It was indeed Al Shaver doing the play-by-play on the CFRN broadcast. Minnesota's 78-79 season was long over & he came back home to do the final.

  • It's actually Rod Phillips; this is CFRN's broadcast of the game. Phillips has been the voice of the Oilers for years. Al Shaver was still with the Minnesota North Stars at the time. Who would have known that the Oilers would be the last former WHA standing in the NHL?

  • It has been said that the MTS centre could be expanded. They wouldn't be totally expanding, but rather taking out restaurant seating within the building to make more seats. Winnipeg will have a team one day, just you wait and see. The NHL will hit rock bottom, where they need real people to support the team, rather than just corporate sponsorship. Winnipeg is probably the only city, where the citizens dipped into their pockets to pay to keep the team from going under. Now that is heart!

  • Winnipeg deserves an NHL team.

  • Winnipeg: yes

Hamilton: no (Ontario doesn't need a 3rd team)

  • Third team? At last count the only other professional team in Ontario is Ottawa. Unless you count the Hamilton Bulldogs!

Yep, no other team in Ontario. No professional team in the GTA. None.

  • Ontario NHL Teams: Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators.

    Manitoba teams: zero.

  • @alexglauer Yes we do!!! Actually with the Leafs and Sens here we need one team LOL.

  • @alexglauer if the coyotes do move, it better not be to hamilton, you are right they don't need a 3rd team, they should move to quebec

  • were those kids going to keep those sticks?

  • OK...don't know whether the person who wrote the statement about the MTS Centre being capable of renovations to 18000 is from Winnipeg or not. It's not true. MTS Centre officials never made any such statement, and it's almost impossible to expand in the location that it's in. True North's biggest mistake was building a smaller arena than what we had - just more private boxes.

  • true, I have no idea why they built a smaller arena in the first place. They could have at least checked NHL standards requirements because people in Winnipeg wants a NHL team back.

I hope Quebec city doesn't do the same mistake when they build a new arena. IIRC the project was to build a 18000 seats one which could be expanded to 22000 in the future, near the Airport. THey even discussed with the town in question. Money still comes into question though

  • The play-by-play voice is very familliar! Was that Al Shaver's golden tones I heard?

  • Those were the days.

  • Lay off Atlanta , I remember when we lost Flames and it wasn,t because the attendance , there was no tv contract then ( 1980 ) and I think the owners at the time had money problems . I feel Winnepeg,s pain and I do believe that they and Qubec deserve another team . I never like the idea of a NHL team in Phoenix or Nashville . Atlanta has supported the Thrashers !!! I still wish we had the Flames name though !

  • I got NHL 08 today. Played my first game between the Manitoba Moose hosting the Toronto Marlies. Manitoba won 2-1 in shootout.

  • I'd love for Winnipeg to get an NHL club again. The thing is that with their current area, the revenue generating potential just is not there from an investment perspective. Gotta get revenue sharing, or a fire sale priced team if the Peg is gonna get a team back.

  • MTS Centre officials have announced that the arena can be renovated to get 18000 seats.

  • recently? I could not find anything about that on the MTS centre website.

In any case, it would be cool if they could add on to the seating.

Consider though, that while Hamilton (and KC)had some buzz about getting the Preds this past summer, there was nothing about Winnipeg.

  • Wow, this takes me WAYYYY back. Jets should still be around. I feel for their fans.

  • winnipeg as well as any other canadian city will never and stress never see another nhl franchise till gary bettman has left the fold, this has been proven after the nashville fiasco ...and lets not kid ourselves bettman was never worried over the poor canadian small market franchises ,all he was worrying over was getting the cap in and saving his american buddies money ... to think he had us in mind is being led down the garden path....

  • You overstate how much power Bettman has. He's an employee of the owners. If they wanted to get rid of him, they would. If they don't like his decisions, they don't have to go along with them. Whether Winnipeg does or doesn't get another team has nothing to do with him.

  • lets hope winnipeg gets a nhl team back...relocate atlanta or columbus to some market that wants hockey...go jets

  • "lets hope winnipeg gets a nhl team back...relocate atlanta or columbus to some market that wants hockey...go jets"

Columbus has supported their team; probably even better than Carolina has supported their one-time Cup champions.

Atlanta is not hockey country. They should never have got a second chance in the NHL. Let them send another franchise to Canada...and may the League stay out of Georgia once and for all.

  • go jets go!

  • thanks for posting this

  • historic video. I didn't see Gretzky at all though.

  • Disco Dave?!! HAHAHAHA
