I had no idea this concert had been filmed. I'd give my eye teeth to see Mingus and his band perform his set, which contains some of the wildest stuff he ever did.
OMG! I cannot believe this was taped on video! It's from a Mingus album titled "Mingus at Antibes." Bud sat in for 'I'll Remember April' and took about 20 choruses (o: No doubt Mingus let Bud do whatever the hell he wanted 'cause he respected Bud so much. I used to listen to this track 10 x a day when I was a kid and Bud's solo had a profound effect on my own playing. It's a real treat to be able to put a picture to it and be able to actually SEE it. Thank You mrc for posting this one (o:
Delray, You must be a monster player to have liked this as a kid. Bud's playing is the pinnacle of bebop jazz, incredible ideas and technique. Wow! And I second the props to the guy who posted it. Terrific - 6+ stars!
I've been enjoying this solo for about 20 years when I bought "Mingus at Antibes" - but the Bud Powell solo goes on a lot longer than this! Why has it been cut off so early?
Hi Gruntol, (or anyone with a good musical ear). Please help. Can you name the song in this video? "A Mistery for Jazz" I'm a jazz musician myself and many of us are struggling with the name.
Hi plimbuff: I listened to the track. It's great, but I have never heard it before. First impression: Blakey on drums, Woods on Alto, Coltrane on Tenor, rest - can't be so sure, possibly Horace Silver, piano. Certainly nothing to do with "Jazz at Massey Hall." Will listen again & do further research. Good luck!
I have this tape from at least 20 years ago. You must have misunderstood my comment tp "plimbuff" below, in answer to his request for information on "A Mistery (sic) for Jazz."
to me the greatest pianist ever I rank him equal to bird for his development of be-bop and his influence. get the album "the genius of Bud Powell. its considerd his best!

This is a great clip. I love the way he just sits bolt upright, and the music seems to come right up through his body. What a player!
