And those who quote the dharma to others, teaching via the ego, without having fully realized their own true nature, enlightenment, are killing the dharma.
The question is irrelevant because a dog is a mental construct; it has no separate, objective existence. Reality is ungraspable, unfindable, ineffable. Mu! is an expression of this.
I love and admire cats, and on the earthly plane I prefer them to most dogs, but the Buddha nature is a different thing.
Every living being and even the "dead matter" (as the scientists call it), i.e. all of the Universe has the Buddha nature! And the percentage is always 100%. There is no difference in that.
The only differences (between all things) are the self-awareness levels of their own Buddha nature, and the way of expressing their own Buddha nature. But please...
...please don't interpret that in Darwinist or psychological ways, for it would be a total misunderstanding.
A cat's way of expressing his or her Buddha nature is different from a dog's, or yours or mine, but that does not constitute a "race" between us; we're just different but equal. Equal on the eternal plane, that is.
And about the self-awareness...we don't know what "our" cat thinks or feels; only a Darwinist is arrogant enough to claim to know... and we are universal fools ourselves.
But dogs are stupider than cats. I think Joshu wouldn't be such an asshole if the monk just admitted that his dog was retarded and a cat has a better Buddhist nature.
Koan are based on the hau-t'ou. The answer to Mu lies with apprehending its hua-t'ou.

"The real substance of the universe, the First Principle, that which is behind or beyond the Voice or expression of ultimate truth, this Pre-Voice [Hua Tou] is transmitted only from heart to heart, and no matter how great or holy or advanced in Enlightenment a man may be he cannot transmit it by means of words and phrases." - Blue Cliff Records
interesting so far, a little overly mysterious written but i guess thats to be expected for such ols knowledge. The Mu made me smile though as it is what a cow would say right ? And there worshiped by the hindus..connection to be explored. Anyway its interesting how the basic content of an observation is beeing equalized with the creation here -i observe the dog and therby create him or choose not to and destroy him... so far i will not think to much more just wait for the next..
He was trying to say that we don't know for sure, but if there is a soul, life after death, than a dog probably has one too. This all sounds so great, profound and mystical, but it's a waste of time in my opinion. Not that it doesn't have good points about life, but it's wrapped in a bush of useless rhetoric. And you can defend the rhetoric by saying "that's the whole point", but I would rather play with sand and listen birds sing all day.
And those who quote the dharma to others, teaching via the ego, without having fully realized their own true nature, enlightenment, are killing the dharma.

The 'u' in mu is pronounced like the 'u' in 'put'... not that it matters especially.

It's true. Dogs lack the grace of buddhism. Cats practice zazen and are much more agile better than dogs.

And yet the cat never finished the race.

Does a cat have more of a Buddha nature than a dog?
sk9utube 3 years ago
Buddhist doctrine holds that all living beings have it.

Do you have a point or are you one of those sort that go around leaving retarded comments all over the place trying to get attention?

The barrier is No. Stop the discriminating mind and experience the non-discriminating mind. Thomas Cleary translation of the Mumonkan is the best.
