Gabriela was my favorite by far! I loved everything about her. Her style, her grace, her sweetness,
She never said anything bad about anyone. Back then most female players always gave credit to the competitor when they lost. Some of the players today don't do that.

In 2003 and 2008, Tennis Week ran features identifying the greatest women tennis players of all time by objectively comparing their career statistics. The result?
"The statistics don't lie: when you look at Navratilova's career record of 167 titles, 18 Grand Slam singles titles and an incredible domination of women's tennis over a five-year period, you have to conclude Martina Navratilova is the greatest women player of the Open Era."
The statistics don't lie: when you look at Graf's career record of 22 slam singles titles, one grand slam in 1988, 8 years as #1, each slam won at least 4 times, you have to conclude Steffi Graf is the greatest woman player of the open era.
Graf-Navratilova 10-10 Graf-Evert 8-6 Graf-Sabatini 29-11 Graf-SanchezVicario 28-8 Graf-Seles 10-5 Graf-Capriati 10-1 Graf-Davenport 9-6 Graf-Hingis 7-2 Graf-Venus 3-2 Graf-Serena 1-1 From the mouth of Steffi: "I don't think I have anything to prove." Steffi Graf, the greatest woman tennis player of all time!
tennis isnt about power or speed a great volley player can beat power and speed look at edberg he beat guys much stronger than him like lendl and courier and also guys much faster than him like chang.
I can't believe Sabatini only won 1 slam. Apart from the serve she had an awesome game, one of the best, far better than Sanchez in my mind. Although Sanchez was far grittier and tougher mentally. If only Sabatini had Sanchez's tenacity, she may have been the best.
Whatever buddy, my point is Sabatini had the GAME of a winner but not the MIND of a champion. Sabatini was a solid player for sure but not a champion certainly not an elite champion. Monica, Arantxa, Steffi were miles AHEAD of Gabriela Sabatini.
sabatini is one of those very good players such as a novotna martinez and mary pierce - good but not great - although pierce won 2 slams and the other 2 won 1.
She had one of the highest ball tosses in the women's game at the time, much like Ivan Lendl in the men's game. Not the best technique to copy as the ball accelerates as it descends but when you have Graf's talent you get away with it. Players today tend to toss the ball lower and strike the serve at the apex of the toss.

I disagree Sabatini was a good player certainly NOT a great player. She was a one slam wonder that failed to reach her potential. Sabatini is lazy it doesn't make sense that such a big strong woman has such a garbage serve. Her serve is all wrong falling backwards her service position is technically incorrect. She got no velocity on the ball and had to work hard to win matches. It is the reason Seles and Graf were superior they had weapons and big serves Sabatini had no weapons.

Sabatini was good but not mentally strong like Monica, Steffi, or Arantxa. Sabatini was the worst underachiever in women's tennis history. Sabatini made a lot of money off of her looks but she only won one grand slam. Such a waste of talent. Sabatini was so lazy she refused to learn how to serve.
Sabatini was not lazy... I worked with her former coach Patricio apey, and he always says that Gaby was really a hard working player and that she was a fast learner as well.
She was number 3 in the world and won a grand slam how many players of the thousands that are trying to make it can get to that level???
The biggest underachiever in womens' tennis history was Anna Kournikova, not Gabriela Sabatini. Kournikova was the real waste of talent, didn't win one goddamn singles event. Sabatini won 27 singles titles, Kournikova won 0. You do the freaken math, and tell me who the worst underachiever was?. Sabatini may have won just 1 slam, but how many did Mary Joe Fernandez, Novotna, and Kournikova win combined?. That's right, just 1. As for Sabatini's awesome looks, more power to her!. What a babe!.
How many times are you going to make the same comment JordanjamesX?? What did you win in your life?? Go and win the Us Open or Wimbledon and then make this stupid comments....if you think winning "only" one Grand Slam is being a failure, then I would be glad to be a failure.
gaby retired at 26...its too premature. she was so good, her deep backhand is legendary. I've been a tennis fan for 14 years now and I can still remember those first few weeks that I'm learning tennis, it was ms. sabatini who's always on the TV. I miss this girl.
once again I said it SHOULD have happened more often...which means I clearly know more about tennis that you think...I am no stranger to Graf handing Sabatini loss after loss.....geeze I hate repeating myself time and time again for halfwits.
I remembered how us, argentineans, criticised Gaby for not taking over the very top of the ranking. It has been 12 years since she retired from tennis, and not a single female argentinean tennis player has been even close to achieve what she did. Now it becomes clear how skilled she was, and how GREAT was her rival Steffi, one of the best players ever.
Yes Gaby had it real tough with players like Monica, Steffi, Martina, Aranxta to deal with. One of the toughest fields ever. She did herself fine and did your country proud. It is a shame she never got more then 1 slam since she was so close a few other times, just a bit more luck and she could have 3 or 4.
Look, I didnt post this clip for people to bag Gaby and call her lazy, I did it so other Sabatini fans could see her win the biggest match of her life. By the way, I remember reading an interview with her former coach Carlos Kirmyar and he described Gaby as a total workhorse who thought that her day off was a day to work on problem shots and he said that everyhing she has achieved in tennis she has gotten through hard work and dedication to the sport.
@kingcobra76 I concur. Plus, she was one of the players that played the most events/tourneys during the year. She was also a great mover and she was fit as hell.
I find those claims about laziness totally unfair.
Look man, your the one taking cheap shots at Gaby. How do you know Gaby was lazy?. Just how many of her practice sessions were you at?. People like you enjoy tearing others down, without having all the facts. Gaby's serve being bad had nothing to do with laziness. Any player on the tour would tell you it was a flaw in her mechanics. If you were a coach(which your not), you would understand that. Go spew your garbage and hatred towards Gaby elsewhere. In fact, you just reek of jealousy.

Why don't you grow up and act more mature. Sabatini was lazy she had a crap serve and was a chronic underachiever she should of won more then just ONE grand slam title.

I disagree Sabatini dominated Graf for a period from the 1990 US OPEN all the way up to 1992. Sabatini had the game but not the mind. Sabatini also did not have the serve her serve was pure garbage. If Sabatini was dedicated to tennis instead of trying to make money off of her looks she would of been better off.
Too bad you don't know what your talking about. Gaby beat Graf 5 times in a row, from '91 to '92. If that isn't domination, what is?. You definately have a bias against Gaby. And who are you to question her dedication to tennis?. Sounds like your jealous about Gaby's looks or success?. Or your a Graf fan, and hated it when Gaby beat her?. Take your animosity and jealousy elsewhere. Gaby is adored by people all over the world, and you can't accept her success. Grow up and get over it.

Y como ayer, hoy, mañana y siempre ¡¡Vamos Gaby carajo¡¡¡
Wow, I watched this match live and I hadn't seen any single footage ever since. Brings back nice memories since I adored Sabatini. My dad got her autograph for me back in 1990, since they were staying at the same hotel in Paris (it was Roland Garros time). It said "con cariño, Gabriela" :-) Graf was also superb.
Its sad that Sabatini NEVER won another slam after this. Gaby really choked the 1991 Wimbledon final I think that was the end of her career. Sabatini SERVED for the Wimbledon title twice and choked she simply did not develop a good serve. Sabatini also said she was HAPPY with that loss. I feel Sabatini didn't have the heart of a champion like Arantxa, Monica, or Steffi.
I have to disagree with your comment that Sabatini didn't have the heart of a champion. Her losses to Steffi and Monica had nothing to do with any lack of desire. Put simply, Monica and Steffi were just better players than Sabatini(or anyone else). Outside of Monica and Sabatini, what other players challenged Steffi?. By the way, Sabatini said she was HAPPY with the way she PLAYED in that 1991 Wimbledon, NOT that she was happy losing to Steffi. That's a big difference.
This started a bit of a run for Gaby over Graf - she won quite a few times in a row until the Wimbledon final of 1991 (and she should have won that one also!)
This did start a nice run by Gaby over Graf. In fact, Gaby beat Graf 5 straight times in that span. No one ever came close to dominating Graf, the way Gaby did.
the best part of it is that sabatini and graf not only made one of the biggest rivalries in tennis but also a great friendship.they are very good friends.they still play exibition matches and graf inducted sabatini to the tennis hall of fame last year.they very good friends.that's grandous!
I agree with you!!! Steffi said about Gaby that she is a very special person for her and Gaby said, Steffi is the most important person in her tennis carrer! Both said that they have a lot of great memories when they played against each other or with each other in double!
Fantastic Gaby! She would have to have won more than just one grand slam tournament. She plays and looks very nice. It seems like Steffi didn´t accept herself to lose.
If you think the commentators cant say anything nice you should hear what Chris Evert had to say about Gaby at the start of the second set. She basically said that the only reason Gaby won her semifinal was because MJ Fernandez tightened up in the third set and that Graf knows shes a better player than Gaby and that she believes that Graf will still win this match. What a bitch!! but its no big surprise as Evert very rarely had anything nice to say about Gaby.
i don't want to get argumentative with you, but most of the commentors in tennis loved GABY.the commentor on this match was Mary Carrillo.Mary admired GABY a lot.the only person that i would think was a little bit hard with GABY was Chris Evert, because in some way GABY replaced her.Chris Evert was called the "lady of tennis", but GABY' s beauty overshadowed Crhis's image on tour.-
I am a great fan of Steffi, but I have to say Gaby played beautifully this day. Enhorabuena, Gaby !

Oh yeah, i remember how Gaby started to play agressive against Steffi, it was the key to beat Steffi on the fast surfaces. I still like both player!

Your right,
This did start a nice run by Gaby over Graf.

Both said that they have a lot of great memories when they played against each other or with each other in double!

does anyone have their 1991 wimbledon final?

OMG really??? did not know that... what a bitch lol.... well, she prolly only wished she was as carismatic as gaby is...

i don't want to get argumentative with you, but most of the commentors in tennis loved GABY.the commentor on this match was Mary Carrillo.Mary admired GABY a lot.the only person that i would think was a little bit hard with GABY was Chris Evert, because in some way GABY replaced her.Chris Evert was called the "lady of tennis", but GABY' s beauty overshadowed Crhis's image on tour.-
