Think they did this because they were pissed off at having to mime.. there's also a clip of them doing the same on Australian 80's music show Countdown! On that show they played with ridiculously loose strings! ha.. nice attitude.
@deismusique To make it obvious they're miming.. look for them doing this on old music show in Australia: Countdown. So funny. They have the strings ridiculously loose. ha! Must've been pissed-off that they had to mime.
this is them miming over a studio recording. they didnt like doing this, so they always fucked with everyone by messing around with everything and doing stupid shit like trying to trick people into thinking rob was playing snare on guitar, and those fucked up strings were really working. this is them just dicking around
se han cambiado los instrumentos para hacer el playback, y robert smith apenas se molesta en intentar tocar las notas de la canción con el bajo, pasa de todo, ja, ja... ;)
There early cool sound we know they gained after seeing the band Wire. Smith liked their sound a lot and adapted. Before they sounded quite pop. Check drip drip drip and other songs from that time.
the Cure music will never die as long as there are fans like us that will keep listen to them and love the amazing music they made/make. Lets pass it on to our childrens. this is pure music history...... the cure forever......
I think we should be allowed to count the early Cure stuff as punk.
It's not like we'd be doing them an injustice to label them that way, it's better than calling them goth or emo like so many people do just because some of the band members choose to wear makeup. (Honestly, wearing it as well as they do, the whole world should envy them.)
I love this!! It is so great to see an old appearance of them and you gotta love them being onry and switching up on the instruments!! Rebels for days!! lol And Robert just looks amazing!! :)) I have loved The Cure for 26 years now and it will go on forever!!! The Cure is such an amazing and awesome band who have truly stood the test of time!! Robert is just amazing in every aspect!! I love it all! The Cure forever!!
did you see the strings on that guitar... they were pulled together.. and yes it is cool to see them switching instruments.. you could never tell if it's lip snyc with these guy's cause...but robert is not doing the bass part that you hear..
thats funny robert and simon swapped instruments since they were playing along to the studio version pre-recoreded song! good sense of humor. (and robert isnt really "playing")
@darkrebel109 Wow! That was really deep. Man, we would most certainly be lost. Their music has been a part of my life for 24 years now and there is not a day that goes by that I dont listen to a Cure song. I wouldnt know what to do without them .Thankgod we have The Cure!! The Cure Forever!!
@juniebird72, Thanks my friend, I just put some thoughts, because The Cure is my fave band since I was 8 years and I can't stop listening since them =)
@darkrebel109 Well, they were excellent thoughts indeed and I do believe that every Cure fan out there would agree with your thoughts all the way!! :))
for shows like Top of the Pops they made all performers play to a backing track...which from what i've read is why the band looks purposely bored or disinterested.
I'm guessing this is The Cure sticking it to the man by switching instruments. They did it alot when they were forced to "mime" instead of actually play, which is why this sounds exactly like the album version. They were punk in the same way the original punks were; different, anti-norm, doing their own thing despite what everyone else was doing, and Simon was even in a punk band before joining. Just because their music isn't punk doesn't mean they themselves don't carry those ideologies.
Punk was partly about finding your own voice and being true to yourself. In that sense, The Cure embodied/embody the spirit perfectly. It was PIL, Wire, This Heat, Cabaret Voltaire, the Bunnymen, Wire, Magazine...and so much more. It was NOT just the Pistols. It got more interesting, and went further, after they blasted the doors open.
As for goth, it's a joke. Best cousin of punk was industrial music at the time, but even that became diluted...
mullets werent even invented back then and stop calling them fucking mullets.i hate that retarded term .mullet you!!!! i dont ever remember robert smith ever joining a fucking hockey league.
they definitely have a mind on their own. i bet they pissed of the producer pretty good... haha and i love the red shirt and the look on robert's face when he pretends to sing.
hahahahaa..what's funny is that Simon has the guitar and Robert has a bass. They probably thought it was lame that they couldn't play live. Notice how Robert is plucking the bass..Cracks me up. I wish the footage was clearer. This made my night...
Wow thanks!! Lol watching Robert Smith playing like he doesn't care is priceless! And he doesn't even keep his mouth near the mic when he sings, funny :).
thanks 4 that.....great track didnt know it came out so early......

The inversion of their guitr/bass was to pull of production's leg, because they were filmed on a play-back

It would be typical of the Cure to take the piss out of a mimed performance. Brilliant.

it's just lypsync. that's why the faces and the "I don't care my guitar is crap". so they decided to have some fun and swaped role...

@JuneMoris because they're taking the piss. They hated miming on these shows, so they always did something silly like this.
