  • thanks 4 that.....great track didnt know it came out so early......

  • Think they did this because they were pissed off at having to mime.. there's also a clip of them doing the same on Australian 80's music show Countdown! On that show they played with ridiculously loose strings! ha.. nice attitude.

  • they were great at writing good songs that were still simple enough to be able to play live however much acid they were on

  • this at a television show at amsterdam.holland oct 1980......

  • come on, obviously a mime job. For a start, the audio is the studio version, and secondly Smith is playing bass, Simon is playiing guitar! lol

  • didnt MUSE pulled something like this last year in Italia ?

  • The inversion of their guitr/bass was to pull of production's leg, because they were filmed on a play-back

  • @deismusique To make it obvious they're miming.. look for them doing this on old music show in Australia: Countdown. So funny. They have the strings ridiculously loose. ha! Must've been pissed-off that they had to mime.

  • That's one hell of a mullet Simon has going there

  • It would be typical of the Cure to take the piss out of a mimed performance. Brilliant.

  • it's just lypsync. that's why the faces and the "I don't care my guitar is crap". so they decided to have some fun and swaped role...

  • I believe this is from Dutch television, TROS TOP-50. Would have been 1980.

  • they are lip-syncing - bummer.

  • i lmao at how floppy robert left the bass strings. hilarious. thems guys is funny!

  • so cool the way they traded instruments. Genious.

  • robert is sooooooooo young! 21!

  • it's the ONLY song i can play on guitar. LOVE this song.

  • I'm addicted to this song, this version.

  • Roberts playing bass because this is lipsing so hes actually not doing anything

  • Robert's eyebrows were much thicker back in the old days! Still one of my all time favourite songs & one of their best!

  • at 0:45 you can clearly see him miss the string, then do a double take and almost get it in time. i cant believe they aired this, lol

  • Comment removed

  • this is them miming over a studio recording. they didnt like doing this, so they always fucked with everyone by messing around with everything and doing stupid shit like trying to trick people into thinking rob was playing snare on guitar, and those fucked up strings were really working. this is them just dicking around

  • Thanks for this footage. They look like ducks out of water here....

  • What the?? Why's Rob playing bass and vice versa? lol .. look at those mangled strings

  • They did use to change up instruments and play songs in some very early concerts.

  • it would have been even more funny if Simon had started singing lol

  • Quel son magnifique, le meilleur de the cure... j'adore... ouaa

  • GRANDIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII.

  • They're defiantly effing around.

  • They aren't actually playing....LOL

  • se han cambiado los instrumentos para hacer el playback, y robert smith apenas se molesta en intentar tocar las notas de la canción con el bajo, pasa de todo, ja, ja... ;)

  • @TheCapi2112 JAAAAAAAA.. ES VERDAD.. QUE BUENO QUE LO HAGAN. EL PLAYBACK ES LA COSA MAS ABSURDA QUE EXISTE SOBRE ESTE MUNDO.

  • They are punk and they are goth....They are just "themselves"

  • There early cool sound we know they gained after seeing the band Wire. Smith liked their sound a lot and adapted. Before they sounded quite pop. Check drip drip drip and other songs from that time.

  • So I already thought Robert Smith played first bass but why was there a switch of instruments?

  • @JuneMoris because they're taking the piss. They hated miming on these shows, so they always did something silly like this.

  • @graemereaper I would too ... That's awsome, They really arent enjoying themselves .. Simon should have sang!

  • the Cure music will never die as long as there are fans like us that will keep listen to them and love the amazing music they made/make. Lets pass it on to our childrens. this is pure music history...... the cure forever......

  • This was nice to see. I like seeing all these old videos.

  • hehehehe, simon on the guitar, and robert playn the bass whit the chords hung....they were not happy of the playback

  • I think we should be allowed to count the early Cure stuff as punk.

It's not like we'd be doing them an injustice to label them that way, it's better than calling them goth or emo like so many people do just because some of the band members choose to wear makeup. (Honestly, wearing it as well as they do, the whole world should envy them.)

  • @MicrophoneFarmer

I think of it as punk too.

  • Robert playing bass?????

  • Look at Lol pretend jamming on those drums!

  • I love this!! It is so great to see an old appearance of them and you gotta love them being onry and switching up on the instruments!! Rebels for days!! lol And Robert just looks amazing!! :)) I have loved The Cure for 26 years now and it will go on forever!!! The Cure is such an amazing and awesome band who have truly stood the test of time!! Robert is just amazing in every aspect!! I love it all! The Cure forever!!

  • Lol! That's The Cure! It's not the first time they switch instruments just for fun. I wish it won't be the last.

  • wow!!!

  • can see he's a bassist just by miming lol.

Probably part of the joke though

  • why is the bassist Simon gallup playing the guitar and Robert Smith playing bass?...wierd but very cool, thanx for posting

  • @theaurarune cause they bored of playng in playback

  • They just can't be bothered eh LOL

  • great! /m/

  • @Hajnyy goth

  • did you see the strings on that guitar... they were pulled together.. and yes it is cool to see them switching instruments.. you could never tell if it's lip snyc with these guy's cause...but robert is not doing the bass part that you hear..

  • Ok so Robert is on bass and Simon is on guitar.. Interesting!

  • WOW talk about a blast from the past

  • @juniebird72,Thanks, I just express my thoughts and feelings about what The Cure means to me =)

  • It`s great, i'm musician and the good sense of humor always is very important too. greetings!

  • robert is so cute!

  • Haha,funny!

Robert on bass & Simon pretend to play the gtr.

& Tolhurst looks like he is feeling bored!

    Anyway,still love them all.

    :)

  • thats funny robert and simon swapped instruments since they were playing along to the studio version pre-recoreded song! good sense of humor. (and robert isnt really "playing")

  • my god..robert smith is very young here...this is cool footage.

  • Sometimes I wonder what could happen if we didn't have The Cure? I mean to us The Cure's fans? maybe we could be just LOST.

  • I need them the same way, like i need someone very, very special too <3 <3 <3 ...at every single day !!!

  • @darkrebel109 Wow! That was really deep. Man, we would most certainly be lost. Their music has been a part of my life for 24 years now and there is not a day that goes by that I dont listen to a Cure song. I wouldnt know what to do without them .Thankgod we have The Cure!! The Cure Forever!!

  • @juniebird72, Thanks my friend, I just put some thoughts, because The Cure is my fave band since I was 8 years and I can't stop listening since them =)

  • @darkrebel109 Well, they were excellent thoughts indeed and I do believe that every Cure fan out there would agree with your thoughts all the way!! :))

  • xxxxxxxxxxxxxxuuuuuuuuu que esta flaco el guaton smith

  • if i didn't know any better i'd say this is the studio version with them fake playing and fake singing (lip sinking)

  • Yes, they're miming to the studio track...

  • for shows like Top of the Pops they made all performers play to a backing track...which from what i've read is why the band looks purposely bored or disinterested.

  • I think it is fantastic that the Cure could play more than one intsrament.. It just goes to show how talented they are. Long live the Cure!!!

  • They're miming......!

  • this is was so far ahead of its time

  • "This is a strange one..robert playing snare on bass guitar:),simon playing on twisted guitar"

    ... So what?! It's Playback!... ;)

  • I'm guessing this is The Cure sticking it to the man by switching instruments. They did it alot when they were forced to "mime" instead of actually play, which is why this sounds exactly like the album version. They were punk in the same way the original punks were; different, anti-norm, doing their own thing despite what everyone else was doing, and Simon was even in a punk band before joining. Just because their music isn't punk doesn't mean they themselves don't carry those ideologies.

  • very well put.:)

  • jajaja ke feos ke eran!!

  • Punk was partly about finding your own voice and being true to yourself. In that sense, The Cure embodied/embody the spirit perfectly. It was PIL, Wire, This Heat, Cabaret Voltaire, the Bunnymen, Wire, Magazine...and so much more. It was NOT just the Pistols. It got more interesting, and went further, after they blasted the doors open.

As for goth, it's a joke. Best cousin of punk was industrial music at the time, but even that became diluted...

  • Lol Robert Smith playing bass guitar ....

  • simon has an awesome mullet

  • mullets werent even invented back then and stop calling them fucking mullets.i hate that retarded term .mullet you!!!! i dont ever remember robert smith ever joining a fucking hockey league.

  • er..it's 1980, short sides long at the back. i believe that is a mullet

  • @rjtkoh, that ain't no mullet, that's just a basic cut. Mullet's we're more of a mid '80's occurrence such as with Bono.

  • roberts a real punker. real deal.

  • hes not a punk rocker ,the sex pistols were.

  • veeeeryyy gooood!!!!!

  • ahahah they are on playback!! broken strings, switch... ahahah LOL

    the best!!

  • they definitely have a mind on their own. i bet they pissed of the producer pretty good... haha and i love the red shirt and the look on robert's face when he pretends to sing.

  • I Noticed that this show is a joke of them!!,

Simon on Guitars?? Robert on Basses? With Broken strings?? wtf??

  • what do you mean its a joke?

  • And such a nice face! what have he done with his image

  • its called life! thats what hes done with it.

  • I like how Robert's pants are up to his chest. Could you imagine doing that? It somehow works though.

  • hey que bueno que es esto

    video genial!!!!!

  • Holy shit

  • Are you going to transfer this VHS tape to a DVD? I hope so, so you never lose this!

  • they always did that when they were told they had to lip sync, they loved making it obvious to piss the producers off LOL CURE FOREVER

  • Wow, a 22 year old Robert...in a red t-shirt! Thank you for uploading!

  • haha! also how all the strings are so loose they wouldn't even make a sound

  • hahahahaa..what's funny is that Simon has the guitar and Robert has a bass. They probably thought it was lame that they couldn't play live. Notice how Robert is plucking the bass..Cracks me up. I wish the footage was clearer. This made my night...

  • Robert's so funny. It's a recording so I think I'd be a little "eh" too.

  • Wow thanks!! Lol watching Robert Smith playing like he doesn't care is priceless! And he doesn't even keep his mouth near the mic when he sings, funny :).
