Advice coming from someone who has never ran a marathon... nor would know the distance of one if it wasn't on a reference sheet... these hydration/ fuel and electrolyte tips made me LOL... This guys advice is a definate recipe for disaster and a sure fire way of hitting the wall... I have never heard such nonsense
@jjosey76 I thought that the tips sounded acurate. I don't get thirsty til I've ran ~7/8 miles. Really though, unless you walk half of it, or you run 20 miles a day as practice you will hit the wall at some point.
I know that I drink every few miles. I have ran 3 marathons.
I don't agree that you have to rigidly adhere to pace, I would just say relax and conserve your energy until after mile 22 or so...then size yourself up.
I have run 3 marathons, 3 half-marathons, countless 5K races and other trail runs, as well as a 50 mile trail run. Trust me, this guy is an idiot. There are so many things wrong with what he is saying I lost track after 2 minutes.
"After about 20 miles you will hit the wall, what is the wall?" Well that's what happen you when you don't get your nutrition sorted early and often. If you are stupid enough to not drink and eat early you will get to meet "The WALL". Don't listen to this guy.
Especially because if you make the mistake of not drinking (and probably eating - depending on the marathon time) in time, and you hit the Wall, you already lost because this may mean that you probably won't manage to run another kilometer anymore. AVOID THE WALL is what you have to do. This "expert" is trash talking.
Wow, what an ignorant load of crap; he has no idea what he's talking about. And it seems like he's just making everything up on the spot...constantly tripping over his own words, repeating himself. I found myself just wanting to scream, "Spit it out, dude! Say what you need to say!" Horrible delivery, horrible knowledge.
what an idiot! agree with comments below. Sounds like a prick and doesn't know what he is talking about--talks as if his marathon experience is how everyone's marathon experience will be
i can't recall ever running more than five miles in a day... but I know that once the endorphins kick in, it's a sort of euphoria and I don't want to ever stop, but I do stop because i worry about injury.
This guy hasn't got a clue. What a loser! His advice would destroy most people. No water until 10 miles? What if its 23-30 degrees? You'd be dead without any water in that heat.
Don't pay any attention and buy "The Marathon and Half Marathon: A Training Guide" Awesome book!
I have and I have had people tell me "only 5 more miles" and go around the corner and really have 7 more to go. I have also heard "This is the last Hill" whatever there were 4 more hills....Must I go on..
omg, i ran into the wall once, but only after 5 miles but i think that's because i hadn't eaten all day and my only drink was a cup of tea in the morning. Also i wasn't dressed up appropriately, i got a little bit of frost bite on my fingers afterwards. After 5 miles i stopped at a dunkin dognuts and ate a brownie and drank some water and was able to finish my run. The run was solely for health. i ran 10 miles that day :D
has anyone seen any more vids of expert village???, am into MTB as well and there are similar videos to this one....THESE GUYS OR THIS SO CALLLED "EXPERT VILLAGE" IS A JOKE they don't know squat about anything...i guess thats the price WE pay when now a days internet is available from the smartest to the dumbest people (no offense)
Believe me, one of the LAST things you want to hear at mile 20 is "you're almost there". There's just way too many more miles to go. Yep, very discouraging!!!
A piece of advice, its hard not to get in the moment with all the cheering crowds and all the people cheering you on. I suggest running in the middle of the crowd. Now, whenI didn't see any people I ran little faster. What I do is pick out a person and pass him, but not sprint and burn out, just easy and steady gradually closing in. I actually did this and passed 28 people and set a new PR.
To be fair I think he is advising first time marathon' joggers,'[as opposed to 'racers',BUT generally, and this applies to EVERYONE,If you've TRAINED PROPERLY,you will not hit the wall, DO NOT WEAR - DRINK - OR DO-ANYTHING in a marathon that you have not tried in training.Your first marathon is not the place for new ideas.
lol... I have to say i totally disagree with the water advice!!!!!!!!!!!!
It depends on the heat where you're running, I ran a marathon in greece and there was NO WAY you could run 5 miles without a drink. Drink before you're thirsty, DONT take big gulps, rinse your mouth and take mouthful per station, but for the love of god DO DRINK!
Generally I disagree with most of what he says....It's all down to training & pre paration. He looks more like a fitness instructor than a marathon runner.
i was trying to find something sensible...how am i supposed to know this guy is gonna make one stupid video after another? it took a couple videos for me to realize this guy has nothing to say...next he's gonna tell us to run heel to toe during a marathon...haha, kill yourself
They claim to be experts. There stupid. That's my comment on a video called how to run a marathon. They have no knowledge...ranting and ranting. They mislead with there titles.
if you need water before mile 8 you should get a Nintendo wii, do your work out on that, the energy gel packet taste great at mile 13 and like ass at mile 20, in the louisiana marathon they dont hand out water just gumbo.
98% of people "running" marathons shouldn't even be running! Run a good 5k, then 10k, then half and THEN and ONLY then attempt the marathon. Buuuuut if your into jogging 26.2 miles with your sack of asprin and gels and shirts that say "Look at me, I'm an asshole" then BLAZE ON! LOL!! SUB 3:10 or start over again!
You da man, 5k! Make fun of anyone who can't keep up with your blazing speed, right? Be sure to look down upon everyone who doesn't meet your high standards. Since you feel good tearing down others, I'd suggest that you start over again, think about who you are and what you're doing, and make obviously needed corrections.
This guy is not an expert!!! Only an idiot would not hydrate until mile 8. He doesn't even know what a GU energy gel packet is. Anyone runner should know what a GU energy gel packet is. I would not take his advice. I have run marathons and my last marathon was Bayshore Marathon on May 24, 2008 in 3:20:59. Bib number #122. I drank Gatorade at every stop between miles 4 and 25 and probably consumed 6 GU Gels during the race and one about 15 minutes prior to the start with some water.
I don't agree with his advice of not to drink till mile 8. Hydration is very important and should start at first aid station even though you are hydrated. It will be a big help as the race proceeds beyond 18 mile..
I want to run the Chicago marathon. I heard it was a crowded one. How can I cope with the size of the field? How can I find room to run my race and still achieve a good time. Are there early starters?
Anyone who comes out with fixed rules about when to drink water is wrong (including the people saying "you must take it early"). It all depends on the conditions, how much you tend to sweat, other physical features, and how well hydrated you were before the race.
If you followed this guy's advice on a nice drizzly spring morning, then I you'd probably be ok. However, in less-than-ideal circumstances, I think his message is quite dangerous. 8 miles without water in summer could result in death.
where is the marathon? Marathon does not have much to do with speed. Doing strength drills or light lifting to strengthen your legs could be one idea. It's all about building up your mileage.
I was thinking of doing a 10km run as part of a triathlon in bout 8 months, thing is im jus out v a cast nd practically learning to walk again,, jus wondering would any1 have any advice in wat training would be needed for the run it would be greatly apreciated????
My marathon would be a disaster following this guy's advice. I drink early and use products high in electrolytes such as E-lyte Sport, NUUN and Endurotabs. Gatorade and Powerade don't provide enough for me. Since I stopped using gels, I stopped getting muscle cramps.
The #1 reason people hit the medical tent with a serious concern? Deydration. So to say, wait until mile 8-10 for water intake? Nuts! Water and electrolytes.. you need them.. take them early and often.
i drink every 5km water after 16km energy -gel (food). and km 30 the same. water water water 2energy drinks to. Greetings from europe Belgium i go in NY2007 nov4 for 3h15min :-) Clint Lenaers
Expert? Are you kidding! If you're thinking abour running a marathon for gods sakes don't listen to this goof! - Water always, people on the sides are your best friend around 37km! ...
How can you be hydrated before hand? That would make your running difficult, because the water in your blatter will be bounching around (that hurts). Also, it's impossible for you not to drink a couple drop every half a mile. Try to just drink a little sip everytime you need water, or else the top blatter problem will occur.
Ludicrous and quite dangerous advice regarding water intake. Completely stupid comment about mile 20 - "you will hit the wall" - really? Apart from the fact that many runners do NOT..
