Its easy to make a scale car go fast if you understand the nature behind it. They were doing tuning to the car which is step 1, step 2 is doing tuning to the track. Increase the voltage, and lower the weight.

the funny thing is, it's not even as fast as the outright land speed record which was 763MPH! that's full sized 2!

i remember the best scalextric experience i had was when i was about 11, it had 1/16th di cast models that were weighted down so they were as fast to scale as the real thing, it was also really fun because the cars were quite heavy and you actually had to slow down for the corners, not to mension you could throw it sideways without crashing, one classic problem with scalextric...
