  • Sounds just like if the Gentle Giants reunited with Yes and Genesis and they composed video game musics.

  • absolutely wonderful...

  • The only nes game which features progressive rock in 8 bit.

  • i love how it starts off all cute and generic, then when you least expect it.. WHAM

  • Damn this game! Damn this awesome music that made you feel like trying the game again after you failed so many times in getting anywhere. I still dream about falling thru several levels to land on the floor of a cavern and wonder around for hours not getting anywhere! NO! NO! I'm out of potions! Boots! Where are my wing boots! Where is my box! Need a BOD!! NO THE PLATFORM DISAPPEARED AGAIN! THE HORROR! THE TERRIBLE HORR-ROAR!!! Elenor was the only princess I never saved T_T

  • @actracts Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

  • Same composer but completely different music if comparing Solstice and Equinox.

  • Meh. Why do virtually all 8-bit tunes from Europe use the same weird effects, from the C64 to the NES? That damn wave sound at :10 drives me nuts.

  • @RyuHayabusa06 arpeggios? hardware limitations

  • @RyuHayabusa06

Why the hell do you bother with chipmusic if you can't stand arpeggios?

  • @RyuHayabusa06 Dude, the arps are one of the best things about chiptune music. That sound is awesome.

  • @VinLAURiA I was looking at Hardcore Gaming 101's list of the greatest game music tracks of all time and started clicking on a bunch of them and this was on there. I've noticed that the arpeggio sound in this track is used on tons and tons of C64 games as well as numerous NES games ported by European companies. I don't particularly care for the sound. And I guess this is where the flaming and vicious attacks begin. Don't bother, just my opinion.

  • @RyuHayabusa06 Although I do have to admit, Tim Follin did a pretty impressive job on some of the Ghouls N Ghosts tracks.

  • @RyuHayabusa06 Dude, chill. To each his own.

  • "i love smoking weed look at me guys im so cool and breaking the law xD"

Go back to Reddit, you vile shit-eating scum.

  • @sonofferguss just chilling at a [0], fellow ent

  • @robertomifano I posted the link

  • wow amazing tunes i love it

  • holy fuck , all that made with the nintendo chip?

  • oh my god I think Tim Follin new the NES's sound chip better than Nintendo did! lol

  • oh tim follin whay must you be so godly XD this songs speed has got to bee at the 1 seting and the tempos probably about 200-250 besides that belive it or not tim follin never used a SINGLE dmpc drum yah you heard me those epic drums are not dmpc those are purely noise and triangle chanel epicness, tim follin you won the best composer ever award!!!

  • @bomono3 you understand people didn't make nes music on famitracker right?

  • @b1bIs1337 DPCM samples were still referred to as such though!

  • @ColorRobo I didn't refer to that, I was talking about speed 1 and the tempo stuff. I dunno much about what actually went into composing for the chip outside of famitracker.

  • @b1bIs1337

Mostly proprietary composing applications and direct assembly coding.

It's easy to distinct the two from each other. Tim Follin usually composed with trackers, whereas Cheetahmen for example was composed directly in the assembly for NES.

  • @MooseHeadMoosic trackers are pretty interesting to me. I can't verbalize it right now but I just think that the whole idea of even messing with the chip and assembly is fucking awesome, trackers themselves also get involved (namely famitracker in this example)

PS: fuck reddit indeed. Despicable little cunts, eh?

  • @b1bIs1337

Haha yes, messing with soundchips is really great fun. I haven't yet, but I'd love to mess with the actual NES soundchip, but out of fear of breaking my ~mint condition Scandinavian NES~ I'll just experiment in FamiTracker.

Speaking of trackers and soundchips, have you tried LSDj? It's a great tracker for the Gameboy that really pushes the tiny little Z80 processor to its limits.

Reddit isn't too horrible, I frequent r/trees myself, but it's annoying as fuck when they do this shit.

  • @MooseHeadMoosic only expereince I've ever had with them is r/spacedicks and fuuu etc. So I tend to generalize the "fanbase". LELELELE XD WE ARE SO FUNI AND ORGINAL

Also I tried LSDJ once. My attention span isn't nearly as good as I'd like it to be. I sort of just stopped bothering and went back to what I knew. Maybe one day I'll try it out on a real Gameboy.

  • @b1bIs1337

memes are so funny and original! hey guys check out my 180853756th advcice dog ripoff! xD

Dude, go for it. It's really great once you know how to use it properly.

  • This is absolutely the greatest game soundtrack ever made. And I'm not just talking about NES games, I'm talking about all games. This is brilliant and even more better considering the fact that this has made with primitive music making tools. I just love it!! =) ♥

  • Just found out that the composer from Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade's Revenge also made this.

    Wow!

  • I think I had this game more than 10 years before I finally managed to find all pieces of the staff... Great theme!

  • Someone get me some tape, my face just melted.

  • HOW THE HELL DOES HE CRAFT SUCH WIZARDRY

  • Wish back the 80`s and 90´s so much!!!!!

  • absolutely INSANE

  • lol i clicked thinking it was Rob Barrett from Cannibal Corpse's old band

  • it's...

BEAUTIFUL! Sounds like Yes and Jethro mashed together

  • The intro to this is amazingly like the song Starship Troopers by Yes. The similarities end pretty quickly though LOL

  • 8-bit Prog Rock!

  • i remember when video games were an unimaginable challenge, like this one, where you COULDNT EVEN SAVE. Also remember recording this song onto a tape via microphone so i could listen to it. I'm either extremely old, or extremely nerdy, or both.

  • Wow, one of Follin's tunes I hadn't heard before. Also great is his Ghouls N Ghosts/Bionic Commando/Black Lamp soundtracks for the C64.

  • taste the 8bitty goodness in every byte

HOW DO YOU FUCKIN LIKE THAT PUN FELLOW NERDS?????????

  • @blkhockeypro19 epic f0r th3 w1n XD us gamers, huh

    No wait, you're a moron.

  • @blkhockeypro19 i like it just fine thank you!

  • @blkhockeypro19 meh, byte me..:p

  • @blkhockeypro19

    Die.

  • @blkhockeypro19 That's alot of bytes to taste the goodness in... can't I just have the good part... the game's above a whole kilobyte! D:

  • lol

  • Ahaha, this is like prog rock

  • 2 people are idiot!

  • I'm sure I remember this title theme as though it was played by a band. It shows how advanced the composition was for me to imagine the sounds to be beyond itself. Sounds superb even now.

  • sykt bra låt, turn up the bass!

  • I loved this music, but I always knew I was about to have my ass handed to me. This game was hard!

  • This music fits the Solstice video game's genre of epic magic and sorcery perfectly.

  • Beautiful music. Incredible that such wondrous electronic music could be made to utter perfection in the limited software of 8-bit games.

  • Beautiful music.

  • This game was FREAKIN hard!

    ....

    ....

True Awesomeness that most modern "casual" games lack.

  • The beginning reminds me alot of McKids.

  • Sounds like the band Gryphon

  • best video game console with the BEST video game music.

Suck you PS3, XBOX 360 Nintendo Wii. Graphics isn't mean good game!!!!!

  • 8-bit prog rock? fuck yes!

  • Awesomness has never been this awesome

  • Eargasm... Just... Just eargasm.

  • Solstice... Man, that game was hard as hell when you're 8 years old, couldn't figure it out. Beaten it now, but geez...

  • I hear lots and lots of influences from Gentle Giant in this powerful, awe-inspiring intro of a game. Surely complicated song, but how much satisfying!

    Good Job Tims.

  • I just came.

  • I want to punch the 1 person that disliked this.

  • You can tell this guy listened to a boat load of Yes. There's even a riff thrown in there towards the beginning.

  • HOLY SHIT...

    Is this real life?

  • More electronic musicians need to really sit down and learn from prog rock, this is truly fucking epic.

  • @ 1:20 , I never listened to the intro this far when playing the game, when I reheard this about 10 years later, my mind was blown into the next dimension and back!

  • I love this!

  • Software Creations ruled the fuckin' world!!!!!

    1.Solstice

    2.Silver Surfer

    3.Wolwerine

    4.Terminator 2

    5.Tom & Jerry

The most greatest video games of all time

    +Follin bros= Entertainig!

Or. some games are not too good

  • @NesGamer105 All of those games but Solstice are pretty mediocre, but the Follins are definitely geniuses.

  • my favorite music by tim follins is from Silver surfer

but overall that guy is simply amazing with all of his work

  • haha there is nearly as much win in most of the comments here than there is the song!

no wait i take that back! nothing comes close to this shit!

  • ...and this is just the title theme!?

  • THis and Bagan's theme are just so damn good

  • wow I never played this game and first started listening and was like "oh ok..." then it just fucking raped my ears with awesome.

  • :P Brain dead from the EPICNESS

  • "Hmm what's the big deal, it's just a little ditty..."

0:09 "OH DAMN SHIT JUST GOT REAL"

  • @TheBilly That was my reaction, too!

  • @TheBilly Best comment evar!!

  • @TheBilly Fag

  • @Blirith Your trolling is ineffective when you forget to disable comment notifications on your profile. Everybody can see you indiscriminately writing "fag" on each video. You're not only pathetic enough to take out your frustrations with the world in this manner, but you're also too stupid to execute it correctly.

  • @TheBilly Rofl, I'm not trolling lad. Less of your abuse or you'll be reported.

  • Oh shit, suck DICK Duck Tales Moon Theme!!!

  • Oh my god, this game was SO OSSUM.

I finally beat it just two years ago or so.

  • @floooble3 okay was it like ohhh I don't know ossum possum?

  • I used to play this during my NES days as a kid the game was a challenge the music made the game amazing.

  • Great tunes. Obviously he made a lot of music for C64.

  • all thwe games he wrote for sucked haha

  • @spaceeskimo11t You are implying the game sucked because it was challenging ? Despite the challenge of this game, i remember always being drawn back to it because of the music and challenge. And i think everyone can relate to how many hours they spent playing this.

  • @Derka33 i actually dont know about this game at all. i mainly meant silver surfer and xmen.

  • Congrats to Tim Follin from a fan in Brazil.

  • 0:07 oh hey soundchip limitations yeah fuck you

  • WEEDLEYWEEDLEYWEEDLEYWEEDLEYWEEDLEYWEEDLEYWEEDLEYWEEDLEYWEEDLEYWEEDLEYWEEDLEYWEEDLEY...

  • This is the only game I ever bought solely for its theme track.

  • multiple orgasms dipped in chocolate and rolled in caramel-goo... do'nt hold a candle to this

  • too bad the game blew hard

  • @Bobintheb0x lol

  • i used to play this for hours at night when i was young.

  • Totally agree. Best NES song ever. Superb job by Tim Follin.

  • This is like Yes but in 8 bit.

    i love it

  • @simonalamona345

The keyboards just scream "Rick Wakeman".

  • Ah this brings back the memories. This game was so hard for me back then!

  • the beginning is funny

  • Loved this song since game launch.

  • this game made me do drugs

  • I recorded this onto cassette at the time and listened to it incessantly. i can never get the hang of it at this speed - I had the PAL version which ran slower and that pace really suited the tune. I might try to capture the PAL version for European nostalgists, or it might only be me that cares.

  • @JeridanCork

No, I would actually really enjoy hearing the PAL version. I'm most familiar with the NTSC one, as i live in North America, but I love this game so much that I'd really like to know how PAL players experienced this amazing tune.

  • @equinoxfan82 I'll try to see if I can rip it. if not I may have to simulate a PAL speed version. It just seemed to flow more pleasingly - but of course a lot of this is due to me having nineteen years to get used to it.

  • @Speednik

Okay, great! I look forward to see what you come up with, if anything.

Very true, you would be used to it after all that time. I’ve seen videos of the original “Sonic the Hedgehog” playing on a PAL Mega Drive, and the music is really slowed down. It’s interesting for me to see that as I’m not used to it playing that slow.

Anyway, thanks for considering a video.

  • @Speednik Do try and rip it, I have the old cartridge here and I can't remember what the PAL version sounded like.

  • @JeridanCork Yes, the PAL version is where it's at.

The difference between speeds is, of course, that the NES used the mains-power AC frequency for timing -- 60Hz is used in the US and 50Hz in the UK. This timing affected the entire game -- not just the music. US gamers had a harder time than us Limeys! This goes for ALL games on the NES.

Anyway, since the game was written by a UK developer it stands to reason the slower pace is how it should be heard, since that's how it was composed.

  • @Ursacke Not all NES games. Super Mario Bros. is an exception and actually plays faster on a PAL console.

  • esta canción es increible!

    este tipo es un genio!!

  • I still can't believe this was accomplished on NES technology.

  • definitly a draw against journey to silius

  • quite possibly the greatest nes GAME of all time. sure, 8-bit graphics suck now, but no game today takes you through such a badass labyrinth.

  • Reason for me to buy this game.

  • This is brilliant by Tim Follin..What a geezer he is....

  • Time Follin is able to observe the limitations presented by the primitive music making tools of the 8-bit era, give them a big "fuck you", and go on to create dynamic tunes of awe inspiring caliber.

  • @RockEsper ...but now Dr. Timothy Follin composes dull ambient. What a pity.

  • @RockEsper I like how you call him Time Follin by mistake.

  • Reminds me of Kansas.

  • holy hell was not expecting that!

  • @david02129 HAHA,us either when we first went to play it and what is even more trippy is when the little blue dude dies,he makes this trippy sound, the whole game was a blast like that =]

  • oh top!!! que de souvenir!!

  • Tim Follin did this? No wonder! The man could make the C64 audio chip sound amazing, imagine if he used the NES or SNES chip. Oh yeah he did, kick ass!

  • Tim Follin for president

  • Heyheyhey, 30seconds onwards sounds a little Halo-esque music :?

  • TheDoubtingSalmon said, "Heyheyhey, 30seconds onwards sounds a little Halo-esque music :?"

Should that not be a comment on the Halo soundtrack video stating that it sounds like Solstice?

    :)

  • Nice tune. It's fun to hear Follin start building from one of the themes in Ghouls'n'Ghosts (1:10.) Other similarities can be found aswell, like the occasional flute ostinatos. There's definately a hint of Yes at the beginning (0:10) and Gentle Giant here and there (1:03 - The Runaway / In a Glass House anyone?-)

  • You can clearly hear Tim Follin has drawn his influences from..Prog rock to say the least..This is brilliant..Thanks for letting me hear..

  • Righteous Brother + Timothy Folin the greatest musicians off all time.

  • Fuckin' good music. EVER!

  • :24-:30 gives me chills! =D Tim Follin, you are loved!

  • god, as a kid I would listen to the intro all THE TIME. I would call my mom into the room: "Hey mom, check out this awesome theme song!" lol When my boyfriend was with me the last time, I made him listen to it as well. :) heheh In fact, I think this will be our wedding song. Seriously, it is AWESOME!

  • @Anouke79 Haha sweet, make sure to upload a video of your wedding to youtube :D

  • Sad thing is he's ashamed of the early music he did.

  • @ASSEMblerEX That's crazy isn't it..

I mean gouls and ghosts on the commodore 64. What great music that had too..

  • thisis the greatest thing ever yesss

  • So bizarre I never had solstice growing up - I didn't know an NES could make some of these sounds....Probably the most intricate NES track I've ever heard.....

  • Nah just Tim Follin's Geniusness :). He also Did Ecco the Dolphin DOF for the Dreamcast and many other titles :).

  • metal as FUCK
