There is no com.apple.boot.plist in the Preferences folder. There isn't even a SystemConfiguration folder in the preferences folder.

You can also change the refresh rate by typing something like 1280x720x32@60.

Forcing a resolution change will not work if your graphics card doesn't support it or you don't have the correct drivers. Forcing graphics card change is best for lower resolutions.
