The government should apologise yes, but on this day I had aboriginal kids abuse me because I refused to say sorry. I have talked with an aborgininal guy working at the YWCA about such subjects and he agrees with me. In my town alot are aboriginal and even more are on goverment benefits. I understand what you're saying and there is a degree of truth to your points but you have to remember that the aborigines are already victims - Terra Nullius saw to that - so weneed to at the very least acknowledge what they ask to be acknowledged - it's not a big ask.
When we speak of moving on there needs to be some sort of finality to move on from. The apology was an attempt to do just that. Perhaps moving foward is a better way of putting it.

The Labor government should have apologised.
Many Aboriginals feel like victims from this constant desire for people to "make nice". This is not new, the likes of Bob Geldoff and others use this to make themselves feel good.
The tragedy now that the government makes almost no attempt to save Aboriginal children from abuse anymore becuase somehow its a case of "stealing" rather than saving.

I will never forget the indigenous people who wept and rocked with emotion as the long hoped for word "sorry'' was uttered. It was truely a moving experience and an important milestone for this country. It costs nothing to apologise but the dividend is immense. An acknowledgement of past wrongs promotes healing. We still have a way to go to close the gap. Some ask why apologise? I ask why not?

I understand what you're saying and there is a degree of truth to your points but you have to remember that the aborigines are already victims - Terra Nullius saw to that - so weneed to at the very least acknowledge what they ask to be acknowledged - it's not a big ask.
When we speak of moving on there needs to be some sort of finality to move on from. The apology was an attempt to do just that. Perhaps moving foward is a better way of putting it.

This speech, is first and formost a symbolic point in the direction of equality. It should not just be, however, a symbol of unity and equality between Indigenous and Non-indigenous Australians.
It should also serve as a reminder that regardless of race, gender, sexuality, upbringing, religion and income, we are all human, and we all long to be respected and happy.

The median income for Indigenous persons aged 15-24 years was $191 per week. For those aged 25-44, the median weekly income was $374 per week and for Indigenous persons aged 45 and over it was $283.Compare this with $209; $684 and $420? Big difference?Get the facts!

Mccnuget-I wish you'd get some facts.The budget for approx.500,000 aboriginal people is about $3 billion per year.(might be a bit more with intervention-administrative costs?).Howard gave $38 BILLION to those on $100,000+ over 4 yrs with tax cuts and super perks?Big difference?Amost 3 times as much per yr for only 600,000 well off people?

Mccnuget-85% of non-aboriginal people drink alcohol, as opposed to only 15% of aboriginal people.The cost to the community for our(non abor.) drinking re health is just behind that of smokers.The cost of Domistic violence across the community will be $13 billion next yr(kevin Rudd said).Most instances of DV are linked to alcohol(although not in my case).Do you challenge your mates' attitudes to women/girls.Greatest cause of death & injury for women/girls from 15-44-more than cancer or??

I am not a racist, not that i would care if a geek and a clearly mentally handicapped (but means well) 52 year old would think so. I have nothing but respect and adoration for Africans, and their American fellows. But everything i have said has been valid, without being vague older-gentleman brand of rhetoric. And no one can refute me. The African Americans had it MUCH harder than aboriginals, where is the Ozzie counterpart of Obama? Oprah Winfrey? Rosa Parks?

Mccnuget -NAIDOC week has just passed.I'd suggest you log on and see the awards plus who got them.We have an indigenous Aust.of the Yr,and Gurrummul was also nominated.He's the great abor.singer.There are indigenous people who are in all employment and the arts, including a female opera singer.On ABS all listed employments, indigenous people receive LESS per week than non-indigenous.That would really piss me off if I was an aboriginal person!It still does!

We all understand that white colonalism was harsh to indigineous people, but despite whatever negative effects that viciousness brought, the positives of civilization far out weigh it. You hit it on the nail, the span has been 200 years. But not by my hand, nor my parents, nor my grandparents. It simply isn't good enough to be weak and give because it smells ultruistic.
