Trust - The Pretty Things [England] - 1968 - "One of their BEST. Further BEATLES-esque comparisons may also be drawn from May, Waller, and Povey's mastery of three-part harmony vocals. Very good guitar." - The Psychedelic Years (Snapper Disc 1)-2001.
One of my better UK band finds. :-)
NOTE: If there's a band that deserves a good compilation, it's the Pretty Things. Thankfully, Snapper has the rights to the band's entire catalog, and has done an excellent job of remastering individual albums.
So what if Pet Sounds (Masterpiece) influence Sgt. Pepper. It doesnt change the "FACT" that Sgt.Peppers is Superior. You see, Sgt.Peppers is better than most things in this world not just music.I would say its even better than most people, even you. S.F.Forrow? What the hell is that! hahaha!
Have you heard of Spirit? They're good (The 12 Dreams of Dr. Sargonagus- probably spelt that wrong). Also Love (Da Capo and Forever changes) and Yes. The Small Faces(Odgon's Nut gone Flake) Nilsson (The Point)
@SuperBlackWalrus What do you mean? I love SF Sorrow. I also love Sgt Pepper. So, which is definitively "best"? Well, both push different boundaries. Both are fantastically experimental. Both are packed with great ideas and strong melodies. Sgt Pepper is (debatably) overrated and SF Sorrow, underrated. One could throw Forever Changes, Odessey and Oracle and Moby Grape's first album into the mix too if you like? But "best" is surely a subjective thing when it comes to music.
@SuperBlackWalrus I think it's a shame to listen to Sgt. Pepper's WITHOUT debating--and reflection. For one thing, it's well known that there's a lot of Pet Sounds in there, which is a fine source to draw on. So does the fact that Sgt. Pepper's as we know would not exist without Pet Sounds make Pet Sounds the greater album?! As to S.F. Forrow, I like it a lot and think it's really underrated but at least it's place in history is clear because it heavily influenced Tommy by The Who.
I love this record, it sounds the nearest thing I've ever heard to The Beach Boys circa Surf's Up. Just as fresh and melodic and poignant as the best of Brian Wilson and that's saying something.
Just picked up that Philip DeBarge album that came out between S.F.Sorrow and Parachute...it's okay, but I tend to reach for the Single's A's & B's collection on Harvest when I can't get enought of 1968-1970 era Pretty Things.
Check out The Electric Banana. That is the same era Pretty Things in the flesh. Great trippin music. Also check out the band Family Music In A Dolls House.
I have that Electric Banana record...I need to go pback and listen to it again. As for Family's "Music In A Doll House"...amazing...I hear this is also Sir Paul McCartney's favourite record of all time...whatever weight that carries...2nd place would be It's Only A Movie It's Only A Show and Bandstand.
@FlynnyRT Not off the top of me head mate, but I can recommend a forgotten psychedelic album by a not so psychedelic band. The Who - -The Who Sell Out (1967). Great concept album!
have you heard the whole album?it's meant to be listened to in order and there are small introductory poems that connect each song also worth reading as you listen.check out the zombies-odessey and oracle,love-forever changes, the who-the who sell out ,a quick one.king crimson-the court of the crimson king,P.F.M.-anything from the early 70's and obviously the beatles, without whom all this would not have been possible.
@FlynnyRT Easiest way to find them is to look at the mainstream Band members and find their old bands! i.e. Chris Squire's "The Syn"... Steve Howe (and this band's drummer, Twink) - "Tomorrow". and Keith Emerson's old band "The Nice."
@FlynnyRT Hey man there's a lot of incredible bands from the sixties and seventies that more people should know. Big Star, Tomorrow, Love, Moby Grape, Spirit, Chocolate Watchband, Bubble Puppy, Demian, and Morning just to name a few.
top track..dont a couple of these guys hang out with dylan in the hotel on dont look back, during the 'who threw that glass out of the window' temporary cool loss?
Thank you so much for this post. I have not heard this song for at least 30 years when I sold my entire collection of vintage albums. I completely forgot about this song and this album and this band. Could you possibly post S F Sorrow is Born? Thanks, Tom
