  • Such disrespect. I am disgusted.

  • ok the japanese didnt make these swords for wannabe fatties they are to be treated with respect honislty they would be do dissapointed and the swords soul will come out and eat your soul for showing disrespect

  • I feel sorry for that sword

  • 3:09 " giv it a few taps" yeah right that was more like 60....

  • Thats a disrespect for the sword smashing it like that

  • my freind pounded a tsuba with a hammer in this manner a while ago and.......SNAP!!! NO MORE TSUBA!!! snapped that fucker right in half!! he had to go out and buy a new one.....wich isnt so bad because it was an iron tsuba and not zinc crap like the previous one...

  • REMEMBER: Safety first when handling weapons! Did the guy who made this video follow his own advice..Hell no. Swordsofmight you keep away from my katana with your war hammer..and I suggest you keep away from your own swords too. Bad bad bad BAD video!.

  • my heart dropped into my shoes after this video

  • fucking noobs

  • DISLIKE!!!! when i saw him pounding with a hammer my heart was hurting....MY GOD!!!!

  • ok :45 using that wood block to station your maybe very old and costly sword leaving scratches and maybe dents wow .

  • NEVER USE A HAMMER WHEN ASSEMBLING A KATANA!!!!!!!!!!根ヴェール 愛イれペア 音ゔぇ

  • After seeing the way he smashed that katana in ..... i think i just got a nervous breakdown ......

  • is this is a real hand made traditinal folded katana, that has to be the most dis respecfull way of assembly ever

  • The only positive thing I say say about this guy is that at least he knows all the names to the parts of the Katana

  • omg i cried when you used a hammer on the katana

  • *sigh*

  • What is up with all these butt hurt people getting upset because someones assembling a sword the easier way of doing it. "Disrespect"? Who the hell are you disrespecting? The dude who has to wake up every morning not wanting to go to work, but goes to make a living. Or perhaps a machine that mass produces them? Seriously? That's like saying, playing PS1 games on a PS2 is disrespectful to the PS1. It's a cheap sword. I'd understand if it was some type of artifact, but it's not.

  • i appreciate katanas and all, the only problem is I really need one now according to the zombie survival guide

  • hahhaha do it yourself katana assemble kits...

  • Sir I suggest you take that katana disassemble it reassemble it without a hammer and with respect. then impale your self with it mouth to the poler opposite. that is the swords revenge no more no less.

  • i have a question... musashi,masahiro or ryumon swords?

  • @hobbitg3 Cheap copy of Bill's sword if i'm not mistaken. Also pay no attention to any of these instructions, only an uneducated person assembles Katana like that.

  • Oh my god...

This guy has the finesse and dedication af a Gorilla...

The only thing he doesent mess up is, that hedoesen't use a bench-vise to hold the blade while hammering.

  • more like he's destroying the katana.....:((

  • people who treat katana this way do not deserve such a fine weapon

  • Fellow Drs. of Anthropology, we sure know when someone is doing it wrong! LOL! Of course this guy is not an expert. Look at him! I know this from my dissertation ("Resource Limitations of Sword Design During the Feudal Muromachi Period", 1974). But I had no idea so many other people had PhDs in this field! In my research I ran across only a few dozen actual sword experts.

You ARE all experts, are you not? It is not as if you are just spouting off something you heard on an amateur forum, right?

  • wow, at least grab it by the back of the blade, that rag isnt going to keep your fingers on. Im surprised he didn't take a regular hammer to put it together. There are special tools for putting a samurai sword together

  • ya Guys make sure He doesn't Hit the wakka on the kaka or hit the she she with the ya ya its sure to damage the HARDENED STEEL lay off its a sword not a flower

  • gotta laugh at all the jerks on here commenting about the lack of respect shown to this sword and how the guy doesnt deserve such a sword .

Its a 50 buck self assembly wall hanger - I wouldnt stir paint with it, so what if he whacks it with a hammer - its a piece of junk anyway .

  • @austinwang302 Man, it's not about the lack of respect to a 50 buck shitty miserable excuse for a sword... It's about his showing people how to assembly a katana (read: real katana) So nobody cares what he does to his crappy piece of iron.. Let him smash it, hammer it bend it, piss on it, whatever.. But FFS, let somebody tell him NOT TO CALL THIS PATHETIC SHOW OF CLUMSINESS a "GUIDE".Highly stupid and disinformative video. It should be banned. Amen.

  • Please dont ever strike a tsuba with a mallet againstthe habaki like that - well not on a decent sword anyway, sure fire way to damage the machi's .

  • PLease dont ever strike a tsuba with a mallet againstthe habaki like that - well not on a decent sword anyway, sure fire way to damage the machi's .

  • i hope this guy cut his hand off...doesnt deserve such a sword, even if it is a cheap knock off

  • The ones on SOM are worth 30 bucks. I went to the mall at one point and found an assemble yourself katana kit for a little over $1000. That alone shows the true quality of the sword including the blade itself.

  • yea i can tell its not a real expensive piece

  • good lord what a moron, kids this is how TO NOT treat a kitchen knife, treat like this even a worst katana copy is retarded

  • ouch, no matter how expensive the katana, a towel is not going to do anything except protect the mallet. video lengh? respect is more important dude. and how u still have fingers is beyond me. if you are going to post a video do it safely. how do u sleep knowing people are following ur instructions and gettin there fingers sliced off.

  • Great. bent seppa, and split habaki. nice work, genius.

  • idiot.

  • @LordCinderWalk Retard

  • Comment removed

  • @isaacvampful how am i a retard when he's the one hitting a katana with a fucking hammer?

  • @LordCinderWalk lol i guess he's the REAL retard

  • GOD. I haven't studied katana's that much. I've two. But this litteraly hurt my soul to watch! It's worse than a horror movie!

  • you're not fit to wield that sword, you fucking used a mallet for it why?!? a sword is like a soul NOT A MOLE IN THE WHACK A MOLE GAME.

  • STOP ........SMACKING IT...........WITH A BLOODY HAMMER!!!!!! ITS NOT A FREAKING WHACK A MOLE

  • where did u get that katana and what is its model?

  • Very informative, thanks, good vid.

  • Ouch...Cheap katanas are not good, and good katanas are not cheap. I purchased 2 katanas from trueswords. One is a mushashi 79.99 with a true temper and hamon and the other is a 39.99 Musashi with no polish or visible hamon.. both are gorgeous swords but i beat the 40$ one since its what I bought it for.. practice. the other one comes out to show off its polished goodness.

  • Why is it that every god damn katana video on fucking YouTube has to have at least half the comments about how the person is mishandling the blade?

It's a low quality machine forged blade. It's not a priceless heirloom. They're meant to be thrashed and banged up, so let the guy do as he pleases. I'm pretty sure people who own real katana wouldn't be looking for advice on how to assemble them in the first place.

  • never beat on the tsuka with a hammer you will ruin it before you even use the sword

  • Man I see you have no ideea! ajajajajaj

  • Hi i have a question. I own an ancient Tachi katana and i just cant seem to find the way to disassemble it because there is only one makugi on the handle and it doesnt even goes through on the other side of the handle.

    Thank you in advance,

    Owen

  • you must have alot of money to buy so many katanas

  • thats a looooong presto there... LOL!!

  • dude that a poor kantna i have a 1000 thousand blade made tradtinol and im 11

my parent got it for me and still that not how you make it you idout

  • @skyrex98 dude. youre 11. your parents bought you your katana. you cant even use correct grammar. i think its time for you to shut the fuck up

  • @skyrex98 you are scary little man. where do you go to school? are you already in second grade?

  • Certainly not how I would do it.

There is a special tool for pressing home the more snug fitting parts, it resembles a large mouthed Tsuka. It enables a complete contact with the parts when they are tapped into place

  • He siad give the makugi a few "taps". He gave it a whole flipping dinner and a show.

  • it's a rubber mallet, not a hammer... they're quite gentle and you'd need to be overpowering every hit to damage metal with one.

  • still its not traditional...this man should be using a half tang...cheap kill bill sword.

  • no shit its not traditional, hes white and nobody cares about this tradition shit

  • Race has nothing to do with it and people do care. They just dont know what traditional is anymore!

  • youre a nerd

  • Malmanhae

  • what is that?

  • Someone who talks to damn much!... = )

  • @brasshandmartialarts

Half Tang swords are ceramonial pieces, the full tang shown is a practial piece, and the "cheap kill bill swords" you mentioned are Half Tang

  • youre not supposed to hammer the tsuka and the tsuba like that you can damage it severely. and also youre not supposed to use that huge hammer to put the mekugi inside that can ruin the tang

  • LOL! One of your assemble yourself katana kits. Just go done to your local walmart and pick one up, but remeber kids must be 16 years or older and ask your parents first.

  • katanas were made by hammers smashing a peice of steel and folding it, so why are u bitching now about how its being hit by a hammer

  • @ihatefatpeople3000 Because if the katana had quality, it wouldn't need it. If you hit the tsuba with a fucking mallet, it will BEND. Educate yourself.

  • cool. where can one buy one of these katana making kits?

  • Cutting Edge Gifts

  • Soo, is this a shinken or an iaito?

    I know it's definitely not a bokken :P

  • none of them, its a decoration sword, from assamble yourself series

  • so its not functional

  • It looks to be a ninja-to or ninja-tou. Tradition full tang ninjutsu sword

  • I can see this man has not studied the history of the weapon he is assembling, because if he did then he would know that making a katana traditionaly was a religious experience that could take over a year and include more than 15 different specalists, this is a video that does have good advice, but also saddens me that a blade is treated this way

  • is blade a something to worship - he's not a zen budhist...he just does reviews of katanas and other swords. leave the religuious expririence for japanese....if it is r.e. for them, let them have it. respect to it. but leave this man alone.

  • so im i sadden by his ignorence

  • @bouncerboytimmy69 Well once you also think about it, noone makes real katana anymore except by swordsmiths in Japan that have had family members and ancestors who were swordsmiths for many, many genereations. So they aren't real katana if they aren't made the traditional way by real expert swordsmiths with knowledge that was passed down from generation to generation.

  • @bouncerboytimmy69 this blade is as cheap as shit and is nothing like a real katana

so it doesnt matter messin around with it

  • @bouncerboytimmy69 I agree with you about that he SEEMS to have abused the sword, but those 15 specialists were creating the sword, not assembling it with pre-made, mass produced parts. This is a 50-75$ kit. If, however, it were a true, hand-crafted sword, you would be 100% correct.

  • @bouncerboytimmy69 Im pretty sure 15 specalists didn't touch this katana, maybe for higher end katanas but this looks like a china made one

  • When i saw smashing katana with hammer i almost cried T_T

  • Smthn is wrong with that tsuka, it should get in easily. Same with tsuba...

  • Well, these are incredibly inexpensive and the one I used for the video was kinda busted....

  • @swordsofmight are they sharp like traditional katana?

  • Katanas are forged with hammers.

  • SO? After sharpening and polishing YOU DON'T SMASH IT WITH HAMMER!

  • it's a rubber hammer

  • So what??

  • so you don't do as much damage on your sword as you'd do with a metal hammer... but of course I'd be more gentle with mine and would not hit it with a hammer. Still, the way his tsuba looked jammed, I guess it couldn't be helped... The only thing I'd tell anyone is to do as you will while thinking about safety, for yourself and for the blade.

LOL, I once saw a guy taking the bare blade in his hand and striking the tsuka on the ground to fit the blade in... You see, THAT is idiotic!

  • Yeah, Japanese have great idea about cheap west made katanas- just destroy it... Real nihonto wouldn't have problem with assembling!

  • I agree, Sulek!

  • @OreWaSulekDesu me too T_T

  • Nice video but.. it seems very unprofessional. You should make a longer video and take your time. Doing it right with a vice and all the right tools. No cuts would be nice also.

  • I agree with you fully and we will be remaking this video in the near future.

  • Sorry to come off half rude. I plan on ordering some swords, I'm considering SoM. I really like the sword lay out and you guys seem cool. But I questioned that after I saw this video :(.

  • This was back in the days when we just wanted to show people how to do it, but not necessarily the best way...

  • Hey I'm the sword newb watching this video :) I'm happy your store posts so many videos. I think its awesome.

  • Thanks!

  • My mum's friend gave me a set of 3 katana for my birthday, the problem is, the blade of one of them is bent, there is black stuff on it and the tsuba is all wobbly, any way I can fix these problems?

  • @ViralZ0ne they are the cheap crappy ones that are only used for decoration, know your stuff before you play around with big boy toys

  • No offence but, after watching a documentary about how real katanas are made, that gentle tapping of the blade made me laugh. :P

  • Same here.

  • depends

  • my pegs are cracked do you have any tips to help prevent this?

  • dude is this the Assemble Your Own Katana (Dragon if it is i i am fucking buying!!!!!!

  • It is.

  • thanks dude i just got my katana today and its awesome thanks now i know where i get my good sword on on swords of might

  • how expensive are these?

  • i have recently bought myself a katana its a 40 inch sword and it only has one peg going threw the handle and a tang. just wandering if thats going to cause any problems in the future, thanks.

  • a sword with a single peg simply means that you should probably not go any further than the cutting of 'medium' targets in practise, as there is a higher chance of the blade loosening over time... but that being said there are alot of swords constructed with single pegs that do extremely well with no real issues... i guess it just depends on how hard you want to push it XD

  • one mekugi or two mekugi isn´t an issue at all. or would you say that the ancient katana with one mekugi weren´t made for anything beyond medium targets?

  • it could become looser in the future if you swing it or cut with it to many times. if it becomes loose you should one, buy a new peg or two hot or super glue the seppas to the tsuba and the glue the blade. just try to be easy on it.

  • One peg is kind of the norm for nihonto. However, If you don't know if your sword is safe or how maintain it, you shouldn't use it for cutting or otherwise. Remember this is a deadly weapon and a number of people have been seriously injured by blades coming loose or snapping because they didn't know how to properly use or assess the condition or their sword.

  • The only reason I'm getting this one is because I don't need no sharp ass sword, I'm a pretty reckles person ,this one isn't that sharp so, thats why i'm buying it.

  • three questions 1: did it come with a sheath? 2: where online can i get 1? 3: is it real?

  • well im in uk but i know retailer's for both usa and UK i bought a beautifl katana for £100 $200 round bowt katana =D

  • should have just filed the nakago-ana out on the tsuba - please dont treat any sword over 100 bucks like this , a horn koshira would crack , a copper tsuba would have bent and the polish on the blade would be ruined - I am sure Jason treats his higher end stock much much better than this .

  • okay ppl this sword is full tang and only 35 bucks. i really don't care if it is factory made and hamemade tho handmade is stronger but as long as it is tull tang im good

  • actually..... this is not the propper way to assemble one. =/ it's how they assemble them in mass-production factories. i have a cheap one at home so: i don't know weather you need the hammer for the tsuba because i did, but i'm pretty sure you don't need one for putting the tsuka(handle, h/e that's called) on - it can be done just by holding the katana in vertical position and "tapping" the bottom of the tsuka with the other. u can find it somewhere on the net, i'm sure. nice vid otherwise. =)

  • Then what would be the entire point of having a fuchi and kashira if the handle wasn't tight?

  • Comment removed

  • :o Sorry I was too lazy :o But you're right, why would you need to hit the handle with a mallet to get it in? Sorry about that!

  • Comment removed

  • yup hammers very useful for wepons swords knives axes cane knives

  • Is this the Masahiro kit?

  • No, this is one of the really cheap ones.

  • Is the Masahiro kit as tough to assemble or do the peices "flow" better

  • The Masahiro would be easier. I should have used that one :)

  • man i ordered the tatsu katana from musashi and mow im wishing i would hav bought a self assembal one :[ didnt think it would be THAT EASY :D

  • omg i hate tsubas! BUT nice vid :D

  • Wow. I dunno why it was such trouble for you. I bought a few of those swords a while back. Not from you of course, but It didnt take much effort for me to assemble them. Yes i used a mallet but it didnt take me as long, nor did i use as much effort. But anyway it looks like you did well, And i believe the vice grips is a bad idea. Just throwing my 2 cents in. No harm intended.

    Immo

  • Thanks for the info. This one was a particularly hard one out of the batch.

  • With all due respect, this is the most barbaric way to assemble a katana I have ever seen. :O

I own a nuber of katana one of them even a 17th century blade (only the blade). None of them need tapping, let alone a rubber mallet (!) to put together. And "You may wish to use a vice..." OMG! Never EVER put a katana in a vice! Maybe it might have looked better if you had a descent surface to work on. Again, I mean no offence, I just wich to share my opinion. J.

  • Thanks for your comment, but you obviously do not own one of these cheaper swords. There would be no way of putting some of these together without the method I show. I picked a hard katana just to show what to do if you have problems.

  • I understand :).

But still, a nice table top might work better ;)

    J.

  • I agree, thanks.

  • I have a couple of Chen/Hanweis' and they have to be "gently coerced" to disassemble and assemble. I find a dead-blow hammer, plastic and rubber mallets, wood dowels and cursing to be useful in the process. I own a Shinshinto and a WWII 'good' Gunto and don't have the problems with them and certainly would not whack them with stick or hammer!

    Don't sweat the $200 sword.

BTW guys, buying swords is a 'vice'. If you want to grab one; use a 'vise'.

    Asmodeus

  • Actually, vise can be spelt with an s or a c depending on how the country spells it.

  • nice vid

  • Thanks!

  • its good that you know all the proper names

    nice vid

  • Thanks

  • i have a hard time to take my paul chen practical plus katana apart ! after i remove the babmoo sticks, i cant pull the blade off the handle ! its stuck !

  • Sometimes you need to use a rubber mallet to loosen the blade or tsuba. Check our site for more info.

  • typicly amerikan if it doesn't work USE THE HAMMER lol

  • I don't know if you ever assembled a katana, but sometimes you need a rubber mallet to finish. Some of them can be tough! :)

  • rly? but i have 2 questions first: how do you move the parts off? i mean you can't use the hamer with for this kind of work and second: when you put your katana together you touch the blade but then the oil you sweep the oil of the blade? how you fix the katana without sweeping the oil? its nearly impossible.

  • and kould you put upload a video witch explains how to put the oil correctly on the blade?

(sry for my bad english skills)^^

  • You just spread the oil on the blade and wipe off.

  • You just re-oil the blade after you assemble it.

  • but i looked in wikipedia an there they write that you have to wipe it with a kind of powder. how much oil do you take (because its really expensive) and whats the matter with the powder. (i read it at the german wiki not at the englisch)

  • The powder comes with an "powder ball" and is called Uchiko. You only need this if you want to do traditional maintenance on a katana. Just oil would be fine for most production pieces.

  • o rly? thanks. you know i soon get my first katana and i want to know as much about it as possible.

  • You need the Uchiko powder to take the old oil off.

  • good old windex is the way to go.

  • Presto!

  • i thought with a katana you'd wouldn't have to be so rough with it or is it just me?

  • This was just a quick and easy version. You are correct that it is not the traditional way, but it works and shows the "how its done".
