  • Girl really stuck it to that one. ooohh! :P

  • @Eamonn20a I agree. Part of her brilliance comes from how much she oversings.

  • objective, its Shirley not a comparison

  • Best Version!!!

  • This song is so simply yet so deep!!! I LOVE THIS SONG and couldn't think of a better person to sing it!!!

  • @lynxjynxlynx Elkie Brooks sings it better. Not over the top.

  • @Eamonn20a Its silly to say that one great artist sings it better when its subjective. Dame Shirley is a very talented artist as is Brooks. You should instead say "I prefer...."

  • @baritonebynight I prefere the version by ELKIE BROOKS.

  • I like this version! Great, love you Shirley, what a voice!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She's wonderful in this video. I adore her. I don't like Queen Elizabeth very much -- at all -- but one of the few things I do like about her is that she is a Shirley Bassey fan. This song could be the Queen's anthem.

  • cant hear it

  • Over the top. Love the understated version by Elkie Brooks.

  • What a way to finish a song!!! She is magnificent. Elkie who from where?? Everyone knows Peter Allen, Melissa Manchester and Shirley Bassey. Peter wrote fabulous songs and Shirley delivers the power and emotion like no other. Have a look at her at the BBC Electric Proms at 73. A staggering voice and talent.

  • @toucheturtle300 Manchester was never known in Europe or the U.K. Elkie Brooks version is sooooooo goos.

  • @toucheturtle300 Your ignorance is not surprising. Peter Allen was at A& M records the same time Elkie Brooks was there. It was Peter Allen that asked Elkie Brooks to record this. Peter Allen was more famous for been married to Liza Minelli, than a singer.

  • Don't Laugh Out Looooouuuuuuudddddd......

  • the elkie brooks version is also boring, i just listened to it... the melissa manchester is the best IMHO

  • @Eorzean The version by Melissa Manchester is soooooo boring. Viva Elkie Brooks.

  • MUSIC TODAY BLOWS COMPARED TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS (PRE 2000)

  • Who is Elkie Brooks? In the US, Melissa Manchester had a huge hit with the song.

  • @prunscilla Elkie Brooks had a huge hit with this song in the U.K 1978

  • @prunscilla Who's Manchester, Elkie Brooks had a huge hit with this song, in the U.K. 1978

  • Just my simple opinion but this is a better version than the Elkie Brooks version. I think it is because Shirley is so experienced plus she has a stage presence like no other. A delivery that can't be beat.

  • @zinesilol88 DSB is edging closer to 60 years in the biz. Both are great.

  • She's Welsh just like me :D

  • Shirley is simply d best!!! none can compare to this beautiful shining star!!! none!!! love u Shirley!!!

  • This is a cover,of the hit version by ELKIE BROOKS.

  • Elsie Who from where?? Shirley has sold 125 million records for a very good reason. She has stood the test of time and can still, at 73, outsing and out perform most contenders, including Elsie and Diana Degarmo (who's voice is all over the place in some sections). It is called Star.

  • She oversings everything. Bless !!!

  • A great great star. Vocal power and emotional life. Terrific.

  • BORING, Elkie Brooks does a much better version. Understated.

  • i really dont like this version, no direspect to shirley bassey but i much prefer diana degarmo's version :)

  • This is a show type of singing that emphasizes the acting inherent in most good performance.

  • i love this version the most because of emotion behind the voice...

  • Elikie... who!!! Bassey rules!

  • It is amazing how singers take a song and make it their own. I love the way Shirley sings this song.

  • Elkie Brooks hit. Her version is stunning.

  • I call this glamourous and entertainment.

  • I'll take Shirley Bassey's performance.. Better voice that Elkie Brooks. The arrangrment / band is also much nicer.

  • Ya' Know Barbra will always be my fave, BUT! I hafta' say Shirley Bassey's voice is something else!

  • Shirley and Elkie are different styles of singers, their range of songs they sing are different but they are both good at what they do

  • when is this??why she looks old??

  • Bassey made this song a powerhouse ballad!! Exactly what Whitney did for I Will Always Love You. Bassey's powerful mid range is jaw dropping!

  • Elkie isn't dramatic but voice wise Elkie can't even touch Shirley, Shirley's voice is to big for her

  • ELKIE'S VOICE IS MUCH BETTER.!!!

  • Well i suggest your ears check real fast lol .

  • Elkie Brooks sings this with more soul !!!

  • Wow lovely...but i just watch Elkie's performance..and sigh she will never touch shirley...and she wasnt over dramatic she is an artist they feel what they sing

  • Wow lovely...but i just saw Elkie...and sigh..she will never touch shirley and she isnt over dramatic she is an artist they feel what they sing

  • ELKIE IS BETTER

  • male queens do get jealousy don't they, fun fun fun..........

  • Diana Degarmo does it better.

  • this must be a joke LOL

  • geeez... the arms need to stay down.

  • Arms down??? Obviously not familiar with Dame Shirley.

  • christ on a bike!, bit over dramatic, elkie is better

  • Ms. Bassey is THE quintessential combination of talent, style, and pure elegance...SPECTACULAR!

  • well you can't get better than shirley

  • Course you can !!! Open your mind , listen to Elkie Brooks.

  • I did she sound awfull Sorry

  • Guess you are lacking in taste !!!

  • Ms. Bassey is THE quintessential combination of talent, style, and pure elegance...SPECTACULAR!

  • What a great rendition. I really love her version and also the original version too. They are all great..:)

  • This outstanding video should be a part of everyone's list of Favorites.

  • this is Melissa Manchester's song. Period.

nothing compares to this original. but I love how Shirley sang this.

  • We can agree to disagree with each other. Shirley places the LaBassey Signature Style to this wonderful song. It doesn't belong to Melissa. Besides, what has she sung lately? Still in showbiz? I stand by my comments.

  • Spoken like someone who hasn't seen Shirley live in concert. THIS IS SHIRLEY'S SONG. (I don't mean to cry out loud.)

  • A cover of the Elkie Brooks hit. Brooks is more soulful. Bassey over the top.

  • No. No. No. Shirley's version of this incredible song captures you, makes you cry, delights you. Nobody sings this like Shirley. Nobody.

  • Love the version by Elkie Brooks

  • Good cover but the MOMENTS do it the best.

  • When Dame shirley was young I would have been up her like a rat up a pipe....

She could belt out a tune but a pub singer at the end of the day

  • listen to that girl back phrase

    amaze

  • Beautiful. I was looking at the Eartha Kitt vids (as she passed away today) and there was a link to some Shirley Bassey vids and I'm glad there was. She is the best! Awesome! Such a great singer who has a great stage presence.

  • Elkie Brooks fans; of course you may keep on posting colour here. However: The only thing that keeps your resistance alive is the hope that it protects you from a painful experience.

But all it does is create more pain.

  • Appreciate your straightforward comments.

  • @esprit61 You are so right esprit. It's nice that they are so devoted to her...but their comments get so annoying after a while. Personally, I like Melissa Manchester's and Shirley's versions the best.

  • This is cabaret at it's best. The version by ELKIE BROOKS is more soulful...

  • Please, never ever compare Dame Shirley to any other artists. Often imitated. Never Duplicated.

  • Would NEVER compare Bassey with a singer like Elkie Brooks . Brooks IS far better !!!

  • I'm blown away... her voice is one thing, but just her presence, something about her is uncanny. So natural and powerful like she isn't even singing the words, she is feeling them and they are emanating from her body audibly. We need more artists like Bassey.

  • no one comes close. this is the best.

  • A touching song of how love can slip through your hands just like that.

  • i love shirley... amazing!!! i felt the emotion through out the song..

  • I felt that it was funny at the beginning, maybe I haven't heard a quick-mild pronunciation and humming with a song. But then again, I was convinced at the middle that it was an excellent rendition. I felt emotion and something that is hard in the heart but amazing feeling. I love this version.

  • Love the version by Elkie Brooks, really soulful..

  • I agree the Elkie Brooks version is beautiful (the best :) )

  • this song reminds me of the Penguins and the Buckeyes lol

  • voice and emotion =great

  • A stunning performance (as usual from Shirley) and what a terrific gown too...

  • yes zin... elkie brooks vertion is without doubt the best..

  • In my opinion best version ever!!!!!

  • Hi zinesilol88

I notice you declare in every youtube site how great Elkie's version of DCOL is compared to other great & talented singer/songerwriters like Melissa Manchester, Dame Shirely Bassey, Rita Coolidge etc. I enjoy the different interpretations of each of these great singers of this song and I hope you will also listen to them with an open mind. Elkie is also a talented singer and I do enjoy her songs but not her version of DCOL. For this song, I only Shirley & Melissa are the best.

  • Love ELKIE Brooks version. More soulful.

  • YES, GOD BLESS ALL OF THEM!!

  • A great song covered by so many great artists. But it's only Shirley who dos something different with it and makes it her own. Everyone elses versions are great but very similar! Go Shirl!!

  • love the song! God bless the divas!

  • Shirley's version is the best!

  • I just listened to the Elkie Brooks version (cuz everyone below said to) and I wasn't so impressed with it, too karaoke style. In my opinion, Melissa sings it the best with a very close 2nd going to this version by Shirley. Only reason why this is 2nd is I don't like the way Shirley does the chorus of it...she doesn't hold notes to the some of the lines and they sound rushed. However, she does belt out the lines that need to be belted out (like that final line) so that's why it's a CLOSE 2nd.

  • I guess to like this version you have to like Cabaret acts Melissa is soooo cabaret. Bassey over the top as usual.Peter Allen the guy that wrote was quoted as saying that he loved the ELKIE BROOKS version.

  • You Go Shirl!

  • I just love her. She has such a great voice.

  • Yes, I agree shirley sings differently and is outstandingly wonderful I like it sooooo much. You can relate and she sang.

  • she's a great voice and a women!

    i admire her!

  • Just heard the ELKIE BROOKS version. Great.

  • excellent :P.... I <3 this song

  • her act is really natural, style is unique and she is alone in that sceptre.

  • Love to listen to her......can't stand watching her though..........Celine Dion's a bit like that.............fantasic voices but not good on the eye when there singing!

  • she's a gorgeous woman, Shirley.

  • awesome

  • This has to be one of the greatest live vocals in history of music. I mean what other singer can sing like that without any mistakes, key perfect, notes galore. It's quite simply breathtaking. Bravo Bassey!

  • I was born in 1992, but I was raised alot on older music of the sixties, and fifties, and also listen to stuff of my time as well. SHirley Bassey is one of my all time faviriot legends. By all means I love all genras of music, but out of the legends Shirley is my fav. This was

    I N C R E D I B L E

  • ELKIE BROOKS does a GREAT version.

  • i like this one better than the original one. but rachelle ann go's version is like the best. =) my own opinion though. =)

  • Amazing how her taste in dress shines through... how still today many of the dresses she has worn would still be "in sync" with todays fashion...

  • I agree!!

  • These types of singers are so rare....what a great rendition. Bravo!

  • Great performance. Yet, shown here, Shirley looks too thin. Not too many face close-ups.

  • This was a big hit for ELKIE BROOKS in 1978. I prefere thr version bt ELKIE. I feel the Bassey version is over sung.

  • K so I like her when she sings like, Where Do I Begin, but ugh. When she sings this, she like, ruins the song, by pausing and then singing it really fast. She does it just to get noticed for it. And she does it. But this song is NOT meant to be sung that way.

  • That is one fit, tight chick! Incredible physique! Pretty solid pipes, too, she really belts it out, with control... I would gladly pay a million bucks for her to sing at my birthday.

  • this video is amazing she gives such a brilliant performance it's beautiful and emotional i love bassey xxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Shirley fans in Glastonbury, she will have a concert there by June 28th I believe.

  • fantastic!!

  • Shirley looks younger now than she did then

  • Nice.
