One other thing whilst I'm in the mood :P Harper shut down parliament=yes (with the backing of the govenor general)for 6 weeks=no. They are now on Christmas break for 6 weeks which is the norm. Does anyone really think that if Jack Layton or that Dion guy were in the position of no confidence they would'nt do the same thing??If you think no then your a newbie to Canadian politics.I'm a conservative but that doesn't mean I trust Harper 100% I think their ALL scallywags.

Great post! Totally agree with everything you said. But the news isnt THAT one-sided. I think the loud Conservative minority make the headlines while the silent majority are overlooked (generally)...IMO CBC does a pretty good job, however.

Cons keep saying "We voted them in", blah blah blah. Less than 60% of Canadians voted and of those voters 36%(?) voted Conservative.

I wasn't saying that...BUT since the Canadian alliance, Progressive Conservatives and Reform Party all merged there is tremendous pressure on the other side to also do so. It isn't fair that we have 1 party that fills everything from centre to far right and (potentially) 4 parties for centre to far left. With so many parties we need popular votes and coalitions (it works in Europe so why not here?).

Do they offer political sciences where you're at? Don't take it just go yak with the instructor.

People really haven't changed that much over the years, historical gov't crap is important and still applies.

There are many differences and opinions within each of the parties and provinces themselves.

Send the major parties an email (Greens too), ask them to explain the whats and whys. They'll send you all kinds of propoganda.

Not neccessarily, I said that they are "biased". You must be East of me. Out here they only seem to air the opinion from someone from the Fraser Institute (conservative think tank). Our local news seem to be NDP supporters.

I've even caught CBC lately giving more "news" airtime to conservative views than to any of the other parties. (During contentious times it is hard to remain neutral.)

To get a balanced understanding you need comments/responses too. (CBC does that, youtube too.)

One question, Kamloopian. Do you see the seperation of church and state as a good idea or as simply a generally accepted practice? I only ask because Canada was founded by England at a time when it actually unified church and state (Anglicanism) with strong infulences by the French population, who remained more loyal to the Catholic church than to either France or Canada (particularly since they did not participate in the French Revolution and remained loyal to their original traditions).

No one (or government) should be able to enforce there spiritual beliefs on others. (i.e. That's why there's a war with the Taliban)

They should be able to put forth plans, opinions and ideas that benefit the populace; and we should have the right to debate them.

I don't think it has been seperated yet, that's part of the problem. That and the fact many do not understand "their own" religon.

I think it started in the mid-late 1970's and was noticed in '82 when The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms came out.

Also, the argument that religion has lead to atrocities is a misleading one. While the institutions responsible for these many terrible acts (I'll be the last to try to deny or defend them) may have been religious ones, they were acting independently of the very guidelines they were supposed to be protecting at the time. It's really kind of like saying that we shouldn't have police officers because there have been cases of corruption, or that no scientists would mean no more bombs or weapons.

My analogy was simply that the mistakes of the Catholic Church (the worst of which were actually political or social mistakes enacted by people who hid behind religion as a way of dodging their responsibility) are so often used as an argument against the group itself, despite the fact that the vast majority of the group are caring, well intentioned people.

Of course, that doesn't mean that they SHOULD have politicial influence in modern society, only that one argument against them is weak.
