Better than E.T., even though E.T. is awesome as well. But what makes Close Encounters superior to it is the fact that you know absolutely nothing about the aliens' motives till the end of the movie (and even then, nothing is truely revealed), whereas E.T.'s plot is somewhat predictable. Close Encounters is more credible in the way that it portrays an encounter with the unknown in good intelligence, without really knowing whether or not this "unknown" is hostile or benevolent.
I remember watching this movie in a drive-in cinema. My parents got asleep and they were snoring, so I got out of the car and watched the movie under the stars...

I can't watch this movie now, the magic for me, as an adult, has long since faded. But, as a kid, I'd watch the VHS of this over and over and over and over and over, and when it went bad, or the tape would pop, I'd beg for another copy, and watch it again and again and again. I've probably watched this fifty times or so. Can't watch this now for some reason; perhaps, it's after seeing all the horror in the world; the only thing I expect from above, is violent death--- or from the lateral.
This movie was amazing to me, especially the more than classic ending scene. But my brother HATED it though. He asked me what was so special about it. I knew he wouldn't get this movie, he has pretty bad taste in mostly everything especially recognizing good movies vs. bad movies, and why a movie is good or bad. Honestly, if you don't get why this movie is so great, there's no helping you. He had a million questions about "what's going on?" "why why why?" the mystery is what makes it great.
I actually stopped watching when I saw Richard Dreyfuss looking upwards since I've read about the Special Edition shows the interior of the Mothership, and I prefer being kept in the dark as to what it really looks like. I don't want to see it. I like the mystery. Spielberg himself once stated his regret in showing the ship's interior, so I'll refrain from watching that part. I feel the setup is too good to actually see it. Not to insult you, the uploader, though. You did a good job on this :)
From the great build up in the pre-credits sequence to the bit where the kid says 'good bye' right at the end. Saw this aged 8 at Leicester Square, London and I still get the same thrill from watching it 34 years later.

Three fingered aliens just isn't reality, they can't build those spaceships. They lack the muscle mass of a even a 15 year old male or female let alone the type of muscle mass that those men and women posses who assemble such flight craft as Fighter Jets...so the strength of such craft to travel through space would have to be far superior and stronger and take a lot of articulation and physical ability to engineer as well as build.

What can I say guys. This film is undoubtedly classic!!! Great & intriguing storyline, great acting and visual effects. Steven Spielberg is master. Richard Dreyfuss and Melinda Dillon did a great job as well. Our modern SCI-FI is trash compared to such classical movies like this one.

It's time for a decent film with peaceful aliens. I'm working on the screenplay now. Unfortunately I'm juggling 2 things at once. I hope to submit it to Speilberg. This is my favorite sci-fi of all time. This is hard to top. I love it, but being a huge fan of the film I've seen it so many times I just lost track and I'm much more critical of the film than I used to be. I try to stay away from the sci-fi channel which I believe has cheapened the genre. Sci-fi deserves more respect than it gets.
wow in reality we will be shooting them down and that little alien dude would be getting shotgunned in the face. Then we will be checking their space ship and doing autopsy and after all that. Call it a hoax.

I can't remember the last time I saw the scene inside the mothership.

One of Spielberg's best, if not the best...his youthful idealism, naivete, and hopefulness shines strongly throughout the film. Williams' score is also hair-raising. It's something that can't be duplicated anymore, especially now, when thousands upon thousands of theaters are showing nothing but broom-riding freaks, talking automatons, stupid explosions, and other equally mindless drivel that only ignorant people will enjoy...you know, the kind that doesn't know how to spell "Spielberg"... ;)

My all-time favourite film. Youngsters wont appreciate the absolute wonderment of seeing the sight of that Mothership in the cinema back in 1977.
It was truly an awesome experience.
And John William's finest score (the others all sound a little similar to each other).

I really really hope the remake it. I know it would beat the classic.

It's time for a decent film with peaceful aliens. I'm working on the screenplay now. Unfortunately I'm juggling 2 things at once. I hope to submit it to Speilberg. This is my favorite sci-fi of all time. This is hard to top. I love it, but being a huge fan of the film I've seen it so many times I just lost track and I'm much more critical of the film than I used to be. I try to stay away from the sci-fi channel which I believe has cheapened the genre. Sci-fi deserves more respect than it gets.

@Uncletim Yes They Called The Nephilim. The Nephilim are beings mentioned twice in the Hebrew Bible; in Genesis 6:4 and Numbers 13:33. Traditions about the Nephilim are also found in a number of other Jewish and Christian writings.
