  • I don’t quite understand what the big deal is about chewing gum! It keeps the mouth moist. And for people who smoke pot, dry mouth can be a problem. I’m amazed at how well he could sing while chewing gum. I can’t walk and chew gum at the same time! He could sing, play the guitar and chew gum! That's talent! (-:

  • Seriously? Who would dislike this song??

  • @ladystockings: It's poetry; it's a metaphor. The lyrics in this song could mean anything. "Dark glass on your eyes" could be sunglasses. Besides, would a song about necrophilia mention angel/star or player/string?

  • He probably chewed the gum to lubricate his own vocal cords....

  • @wade1234able Or from the previous evening's oral friction...

  • @wade1234able LOL...no. A lead VOX doesn't chew gum while he's singing. What he is doing is highly unusual. I know singers that do lemon tea, gargle and then swallow a shot of olive oil or even not speak for the entire day before a gig. But chewing gum, especially while singing is wicked hard because too MUCH saliva accumulates in your mouth and you start blowing your notes with spittle. I think he just likes gum OR has a salivary gland problem that doesn't produce lubrication in his mouth.

  • They all (Emerson, Lake, AND Palmer lawl) chewed gum. It was for nerves.

  • Love his voice, its gorgeous and very masculine at the same time.

  • What I can't figure is why there are 35 thumbs down. Go figure.

  • Where are the real male singers today? I can't think of anyone at all today who sings with balls and a rich voice like this. Maybe all the guys are sitting on the couch playing videogames and don't do this anymore.

  • makes me think of Morgan Fairchild for some reason.. love this writer... great vocalist and guitarist...this song is so chill!!

  • ELP was my first concert when I was 15 at the Rhode Island Auditorium. It has since been torn down. I had tickets for 10 Years After but they canceled. It was a time in space. A hit of acid and an oz of Jamaican, we were buzzing. So was everyone else there. Those were the days may friend.

  • YouTube needs to add a third button. "LOVE" For songs like this, like isn't enough.

  • His singing is effortless and perfect.

  • great song greg lake is one of the best ballet writer ever.

  • @thaddeusmazuchowski , yeah, I really like Swan Lake.

  • Just the best song from ELP. The words just kill.

  • @rastapatti1 "HALLOWED BE THY NAME"!!

  • Wow what can i say wonderful song and just makes me melt Mr Lake in his hey days was truely beautiful

  • Sigh. He's so cute.

  • @leizacrezee . he wrote "Lucky Man" when he was 12.

  • @lacystockings: You've got to be kidding me, necrophilia? It is about how Lake felt about the female fans in the audience.

  • @Romanov1010 , and vice versa.

  • He sings perfectly, WITH GUM IN HIS MOUTH! That is one tallented mouth! :)

  • I just can't get enough of this after all these years.

  • to do: Listen Here:

  • Very beautiful song, very good baritone voice. No-one sings this well nowadays, and has such depth to their voice.

  • Anyone know if Greg ever got his ladder?

  • @lurch321 , and did he want to go up or did he want to get down?

  • "Someone get me a ladder."

Lake was the laziest lyricist. I guess Sinfield was on vacation.

  • beautiful song..but hey I really miss the short Wah solo...I kept expecting to hear it after "Still you turn me on"

  • Wow, didn't know there were any record left from this one. About 8 of us went down to Ontario, was a great weekend the concert was 1 day but the party ran for several more!

  • I love every single version of this and the way he looks in every single version.

  • I was there. It was the biggest show I've ever been to, 350,000 or more, a lot of freaks,Emmerson played a spining piaino , It was great

  • This is still a moving and wonderful song, and sang by the only one who could stir all your emotions.

  • beautiful and good song

  • You see it really doesn't matter

    When you're buried in disguise

By the dark glass on your eyes

    Though your flesh has crystallised

    Still...you turn me on

  • @flangej Yup....you're right on track ; )

  • He's touring in 2012 people.

  • sexy song

  • Beautiful song

  • Do any of you actually know what this song is about? Listen. You'll never guess in a million years.

  • @LacyStockings Ok what is it about...love it...

  • @leizacrezee Edgar Allen Poe penned a poem, "Anna Bell Lee". Does that give you a clue? They have the same, uh, common story but one is written and one is sung. Got it?

  • @LacyStockings Wow..thanks! He really is brilliant. Didn't he write Lucky Man when he was 13 or 14, unbelievable..What about In the Beginning, any info this awesome song?

  • @leizacrezee So, you understand what we are talking about here, right? Not his brilliance......more of when he...um....smiles with a wide grin toward the end of the tune as says, "from MY experience!". : O

  • @LacyStockings Honestly I don't understand....I am familiar with the poem Anna Bell Lee and I know many musical artists have used this poem as a basis for their song...I just thought it was sexy ending the song with that grin. I need more hints please...:)

  • @leizacrezee Edgar Allen Poe...."in your sepulchre by the sea". Anna Bell Lee lies in a tomb by the sea. In this song he sings,"It all gets so intense, from MY expericence (big smile), It just doesn't SEEM to make sense." Also sung, "Every day a little Sadder, a little MADDER (insane), someone get me a LADDER." You need a ladder to climb out, of say something buried 6 feet under or to get in/out of a sepulchre (tomb). The song is about Necrophilia. From his own experiences or no?

  • @LacyStockings Necrophilia?! Are you completely mental? This song is about the intensity and stresses of Greg Lake's FAME, and the highs (someone get me a ladder) he feels while performing. FYI, in psychiatry, necrophilia is considered a pathological condition with a host of other behavioral disorders associated with it!

  • @DeNee7777 Yeah. OK. Anything you say. I never said HE was a necro. Just the song, moron.

  • @LacyStockings You're wrong. This song was inspired by the hectic life style of touring, the ladder refers to a joke ELP's roadies had about the sheer amount of gear they used to truck around with, and someone needed a ladder to reach the top tier of Keith Emerson's huge Moog synthesizer. If someone screwed corpses do you think they'd admit it in a song?

  • @astrophonix , uh, yeah. What better way to portray screwing corpses - with a nice melodic tune.

  • @rmtmiller Edgar Allen Poe portrayed love of his dead woman thru, "Annabel Lee". There are many variations to love. Some normal to you and I, some odd. Maybe Greg Lake lives a normal sex life, maybe he doesn't. Who cares? That's his biz and as long as he's not hurting ppl or animals, I really don't care if he is in love with an inanimate object such as a vacuum cleaner. He is a wonderful singer of the 70's and a lovely tune. By the way,a love ballad sure would include a ref to a ROADIE's ladder.

  • @LacyStockings , wtf are you talking about? I'm joking in replying to the post I replied to. And I don't really care to know what he's singing about in this particular song. I just like it.

  • @rmtmiller That's nyyyyyyyce.

  • @rmtmiller EXACTLY! Thanks!

  • @astrophonix Yeah. Ok. Anything you say. Just like GnR's song. "I used to love her, but I had to kill her." was written by the band and is real. Are you an idiot? A joke about a ladder in a love ballad? I never said Greg Lake was a necro or did corpses, you moron. I said the song was about that...a person loving someone so much that their even being dead, "still turns them on" and it "all gets so intense..from MY experience." If you ever read poetry, it's not all what you think. Who cares?

  • @leiza But just as Edgar Allen Poe was a great writer & poet, so is Greg Lake.Just because both medias are about a taboo subject, this fetish is shared by, for the most part..lol..NORMAL individuals who would never hurt beast nor human. The condition is sometimes only fantasy, but usually taken further to the extreme. It can be random or truly Bcuz someone cannot let go of the dead for true loves sake. The fetish is harmless (illegal) & about total control that they lack w/ the living.

  • @LacyStockings Wow, thanks for spelling it for me...lol...It amazes me that he wrote many of his songs from the age of 14-19..."deep"subjects...thanks again.

  • It's a good night for some Brain Salad Surgery...vous pouvez être n'importe quoi

  • keeps memories alive

  • Is there a more perfect man out there? He is gorgeous, has a voice like an angel, has been married to the same woman for 37 years, a great musician and songwriter..... and looks extremely hot and sexy singing and chewing gum at the same time. LOL

  • @TheBlondePhoenix Agreed

  • smoking a big blunt listning to this,,

  • Mmmmmm......

  • His german wife is a lucky woman

  • I didnt "get" ELP back in the day...I do now....

  • I'd take your gum, but only from your mouth. You are beautiful, even after all these years.

  • @barbg1123 Oh..come on...

  • @LacyStockings You sound a little jaded. I love Greg Lake, & Emerson, & Palmer.Greg is my fantasy. I can take gum out of his mouth if I like, & I like.

  • @barbg1123 I not "jaded". I just married to a pro musician and even my husbands' chewed gum isn't something on my list. Yuk. If I want to have some of his famous saliva or "other" fluids, I can use my own mouth. But to want to take a complete strangers gum into your own mouth? I would definitely pass. But I seriously doubt you'll get the opportunity to take Greg's gum, unless it's for sale on eBay or something. Good luck.

  • Mystical, haunting

  • one of the greatest, incredible footage!

  • I love Greg lakes voice.

  • ELP had the Best Lyrics.

  • FOR TONY

  • Sexy

  • Why would anyone NOT love this song... One of my very first concerts..I'm still impressed 40 years later.. I'm not a kid and have heard a lot of music and have seen a lot of shows and ELP still turns me on.

  • A very melodic song.

  • One man and a guitar. Magic. This was out doors in from at a huge festival but Greg makes you feel like he is just playing for you on you front porch.

  • Such a beautiful song. You make me want to chew your gum.

  • @2livelove U ppl crack me up.I'm married to a pro drummer.Musicians are normal ppl just like U & I except they have talents we don't, so ppl worship them. Well, I don't.You still have to wash their clothes, dress them properly & keep them on a long leash. It is not all sunshine.I had no intentions of marrying 1,but it just happened b/cuz of love.My husband likes to chew gum but I don't want to chew his & he's one hot ticket sale.Take the stars out of your eyes.Love the talent here but just a guy.

  • Acid and ELP were a perfect match!!! Brotherhood of Eternal Love acid, specifically. You have to be really old to understand that and maybe not even then.

  • @alkimst13 haha not that old ,just turned 57 and I remember ELP and windowpane very well lol,too well actually :)

  • @misred1 oh...the windowpane....haven't thought of that for awhile. Had a little of that at the California Jam....

  • I LOVE THOSE GUYS !

  • here's my memory...one summer, at a party, out in the sticks, sitting on the couch with a couple of people I 'd just met, feeling really high and one guy starts playing this song on an acoustic guitar...first time I'd ever heard it...so so nice right then...I can still taste it now

  • Whenever I want to lose my mind again I just listen to this.

  • @rmtmiller God he can play guitar. That voice.

  • This is one of those instances where the stripped down, solo acoustic version is way better than the slick, overproduced studio version. Beautiful...

  • 1/3 he's a golden pagan god, 1/3 a medieval minstrel, and 1/3 a cosmically over-confident rock superstar. Totally perfect and magnificent gem of a song, and entirely superior to the version on the Brain Salad Surgery LP (which features some electronic gimmicks making the song yet another joke song, besides Benny the Bouncer).

  • 34 dislikes, really? ugh. guess those bozo's are playing 50 cent and lady gaga in their cars. this is a great tune!!!

  • ..the leaves danced across the road we traveled like Fire!..cuz..oui...were..tripping!..

  • definitely INTENSE!!!!

  • it's not just the song, it's those curls, the way those lips move, that beauty mark, oh man!!!! What a hottie!!!

  • To you @wanjeanaz . I had to smile when I read your comment ! The reason is because in my humble opinion Greg Lake is as, or more, attractive than Jim Morrison. He has that something that made him stand out in a crowd. A certain charisma/ star quality if you will. Either one has it, or does not.

  • Awwwww..he was soooooooo adorable...even chewing that GUM. Heheee! I had SUCH a crush on him!

  • SEXY!!!!!!!!

  • So funny how many videos of the 70's show singers chewing gum in between phrases...

  • What a great song. However, when listening to this song on a record as a kid I never envisioned him chewing gum in between lyrics. Makes me laugh a bit each time I watch this video.

  • there's something about the way the stage lights illuminate the contours of his face, his gum chewing and obviously that voice. I could watch this over and over. I can't listen to the original recording of this song after this, nothing beats this live performance.

  • @stregadisalem It should have been left this way. They shouldn't have added Emerson & Palmer to it. Same goes for Lucky Man and The Sage. Just my humble opinion.

  • @stregadisalem Well said. Totally with you. Great performance by Greg.

  • Women want him. Men want to be him.

  • Greg Lake...the only man to ever make me question my heterosexuality, if only for a few seconds.

  • Happy Birthday Mr. Lake, you sexy beast!

  • só faltou a dietilamida 25 pura

  • wishing you a wonderful birthday~ !!!!!!!!!

Love listening to your voice, been an ELP fan forever~!!

  • Happy 64th birthday, Greg. You are simply amazing!

  • Happy Birthday Greg Lake!

  • Happy Birthday, Greg! You still turn me on as well! :D

  • Happy BDay

  • perfection...

  • awesome eternety

  • he's chewing gum

  • Wow, what a flashback. I saw them several times in the early 70's. Great band.

  • @mamacujo I AM SO JEALOUS!!!

  • this really inspires me

  • This is my favorite elp song, and my favorite acoustic version of this one. Still amazing to watch Greg chew gum while singing.

  • Excellent voice!.......Great song!

  • I miss music.

  • @dd9s me to saw them in ala in 76 mda at its best

  • That voice, those lips, that playing, that face, this song. I could die & go to heaven. Happy soon-to-be-birthday, Greg. We still love you.

  • @annikee59 He's a Scorpio? No wonder I love this man!

  • @annikee59 ew gross PERVERT!

  • @springflower57 What's really perverted is someone NOT getting what Annikee59 is talking about. Your loss.

  • @LolasTubular are you joking?? he's no commenting just the song "those eyes those lips" he cheesed it out! It's a great song and he's a fucking perv... he spoilt the song for me with his homosexual urges FUCK!

  • @springflower57 HE? HE? You obviously have a proper name problem. And you were brought up in a 90's mentality of Puritanical BS. Join the world that actually has sense and senses. I'm an old woman. And Greg is still hot.

  • @annikee59 lol my apologies then.. but you did cheese it out bad soz

  • @annikee59

The male version of Sandy Denny. Together with "C'est la vie" who knows where the time goes.

  • How can he sing that great in front of such a large crowd WHILE CHEWING GUM.

HOW CAN ANYONE THUMB DOWN THIS GENIUS?

  • One of the best bands, one of the best voices. Greg.

  • Beautiful song, beautiful voice.........

  • I would love...LOVE...LOOOVVVEEEE to know what kind of guitar he's playing, so I can have a name for my new dream acoustic.

  • @MariaBorgesJazz

I dunno, that doesn't look like a double neck to me...

  • @MrYoursuchanoob , sorry... it's a Zemaitis 12-string Acoustic... It was a very wrong "copy and paste" ... If I"m wrong again, I will give you the guitar!!! ;-)

  • He even makes chewing gum sexy...sigh.....

  • KITTY...U STILL TURN ME ON AND ALWAYS WILL...MORE THAN ANY OTHER WOMAN IN LIFE..THATS WHAT MAKES IT SOO HARD, FINDING ANOTHER PERFECT PARTNER...U WOULD HAVE BEEN...I MISS AND LOVE U....BEST OF LUCK TO U GUYS...AND PLEASE STAY FRIENDS WITH ME..I NEED YOUR PERSPECTIVE..X0..pete

  • With a chewingum among your teeth, everything becomes possible.

  • How stoned is he?

  • @crimsonkng1 , just enough.

  • just listen

  • ELP. Only this... ELP... Do you need more ? It isnt necessary !

  • This is one of the best unplugged performances ever given, this version is better than the recorded one. If you truely listen to the words..he is talking about the music business, all the hype associated with being a rock star and the impact it had on him..yet ..performing for us still turned him on.

  • I saw them live at cobo hall, detroit, they were unbewievable...open ur minds

  • i noticed this awhile back... i think he's chewing gum. i can't imagine singing with it. but he sounds great ~ amazing voice out of one so young at the time of this recording.

  • k-she classic!!!!!!!

  • You gum-chewin' Bloke. AWESOME

  • @vanudepecke is he chewing gum or did he have a little too much cola before he hit the stage?

  • Comment removed

  • breath taken...

  • It's like it was just yesterday when this first came out and I needed to hear it again.

  • What a voice! It´s one of the most uderrated rock and roll voices

  • The best voice in rock's long history. And one of the most talented and original musicians. A rock star of rock star's. And a song you just never get tired of. Paul Rodgers is #2 best voice.

  • @noellamine And yet he nor ELP are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What a bunch of BS! Everytime I hear this song it takes my breath away. THAT was talent!

  • I can't imagine the early life this man must have lived when it came to being able to please a a fine woman. Guys like this know quality over quantity. Not like Gene simmons who has been with over 4800 women. All skanks no doubt. This man has a gift.

  • Oh, the gum chewing is what makes it awesome!

  • Funny I never saw him sing this before, and I gotta say I never associated fast gum chewing with it ....but whatever turns you on mr. Hot Voice ! You still do turn me on too :-P

  • My god. I'm not worthy of even clinging to the bottom of this man's shoes.

  • I heard he wrote "Lucky Man" when he was 12 years old.

    If true, that is incredible.....

  • This is purely a shallow, female observation, but since we're all familiar with Greg's musical genius, I feel I can be forgiven . . But oh God, those beautiful lips . . .

  • @demeterschalice From another shallow female point of view....I couldn't agree with you more. *sigh* The word that comes to mind when I watch this is dreamy.

  • Almost 40 yrs later and he still gives me the chills.

  • Great songs by great artists...pick any of their songs and you'll be "turned on"!

  • He weighs about 400 lbs these days!

  • Yummy!!!

  • wow if i sang like that

  • Great song, but it get's old watching artists chew gum, it's obvious that they are trying to be like John Lennon. Hope he chokes on the gum...

  • @BLUEBLOODRED13 Next time you have a thought...let it go.

  • @FLSoleil1 Next time you want to reply, put some gum in your mouth, like your idol. Lol.

  • @BLUEBLOODRED13 Is that best comeback you can regurgitate? LOL!!!

  • @FLSoleil1 Not a comeback, just a reply to your comment...

  • This is perfection.
