Hey I'm going to the English indoor championships. I've got 3 minutes to row as far as I can. Any tips because I'm nit doing very good at the moment. How many spm.what my split should be. how to keep going etc... Any tips?
I know how he feels my quads die halfway through. But I still think he could use his legs more. I really don't think his glutes are doing anything here. I acctually wanna try his technique to see if it works

I don't mean to sound like I'm poo pooing your achievement here, Erging is a legal form of torture, and it kills me. I won our clubs impromptu erg-off last night with a 1:24, and I started to lose the legs about halfway through.
@VanSam obviously these guys are not actual rowers, but that doesnt mean theres anything wrong with shortening your drive... Thats what everyone does on a 500m lol its how you get your rate up high enough...
Holly shit! There is no way #19 is a rower! No race is 500m. That dude would get his shit owned in a 2k. Not to mention his fat ass wouldn't even fit in a boat. Why do people post this shit? Just cause you can erg doesn't mean you can row.
@some5672 Rowing indoor is on a rowing machine, or erg. Rowing outdoor is in a boat, and on water...One relies a lot more on strength (indoor) and the other relies a lot more on technique (outdoor)
I can give you an advice for free.I am nearly 10 yr older than Darness see our push up contest on my videos also the 3 min boxing video .I advise about 30 min cardio Ie run every day.Don't take any notice if you like I am rank number 1 at 4min rowing and number 2 is 15m behind me don't take my word for it check Concept 2 my name is Phillip Cameron.

WOOOO. Xeno i saw you at Crew Classic... im one of Nicks rowers at Long Beach Jr's... It was awesome to see you wishing us luck right before the start!!!
he didnt go all the way up the slide...he just went half slide the whole time....he probably could have gotten his time down if his technic was better! but awesome job!
@ironoarsman you're right Xeno - I did 1:19.9 in competition this year at the English Indoors. Thanks for the offer of support and help, I knwo you do a lot of good for many athletes, keep it up :-)
@paigntonleisureclub Take a look at the 100 push up challenge with me and some guy called Darness. At the moment I am rank 7 in the world at 500m rowing 1.38 mins check for yourself I am Phillip Cameron .See my videos and my profile too.
Hey man, nice result, 1:14! i sure can't achieve it, and i was in national rowing team for 7 years :) and my personal best on 6k is 1:38.0 , and 2k is 1:31. Anyways, if you plan to go faster on longer tracks, I'd recommend that 65% of your training consists of +17secs from 2k's best, 20% on +12, 10% on +7-10, and 5% on sprints. Cheers m8, and keep up the good work!
PS. there's a video channel "ironoarsman" of Xeno Muller, olympic champion, where he shows the right ergometer technique!
1:14 is world record...hmm sounds bit low cause people go like 1:27 on 6000...and they cant go below 1:14 on 500? really hard to belive... I am 14 years old and I do 1:27 on 500 and I dont have alot of mass like these people, on water they would suck balls...
@SuperCampernoob hey m8, no one goes 1:27 on 6000m :) iztok cop, sculler from slovenia had a record of 1:31.3 , but recently czech sculler made a new record at 1:31.0. another great result was from new zeland's legend rob wadell, he achieved 1:29 on 5000m, but he was rowing on a slider connected to ergometer (allows you to transfer the energy better with a slightly higher rating of strokes per minute). 1:14 is still an awesome result :)
That is some seriously bad technique right off the bat (keep your arms straight, throw your hands away before breaking the knees and push with your legs rather than pulling with an open back). Great, you can hit a silly target, but have you ever actually been in a boat? The ergo is used ideally as a training device for water - all this teaches people is how to injure themselves. Technique, power and consistency wins races.
@IncontinentJim Technique - agreed, it was raw and rubbish back then. I've worked hard to improve both technique, power and endurance since then. Rowing - respect to 'proper' rowers out there, for me indoor rowing is a sport in itself. I like it. Did you see my second attempt a year later? (video response)
@paigntonleisureclub Thanks for the response - I had just come home off the back of a particularly intense training session in preparation for this year's competition season, so was in a critical mood! You've clearly got the power, it would just be put to better use either by learning proper technique on the water first or better still join a club if you're near the coast. Times mean little unless it translates to the real thing (an opinion granted).
@RadierManor well done, you have a good marker now to go on and improve from. This 500m race I did a few years ago when first starting is nothign like a 10 minute training piece - it was a thrash about when I didn't really know what I was doing!
@crewd00d Erm...1) I wasn't trying to show off, I was trying to get an idea of how I was doing comparitively. 2) I started from scratch and 3) Really? You're having a go at someone on a comments forum where peope are being supportive of each other's endeavour? 4) I should hope that when you are 16-18 and training regularly you can get a good target, compared to a 35 year old who'd only rowed for 12 weeks 5) Whatever you may believe we are not in competition.
Respond to this video... @TimDunkin15 If you're asking me what I have it on, it's on 10. I was told that most have it on 3-4 but the challenge I was working under said it had to be at 10. We all used the same machine so the drag factor was the same in the final row.
Your gap in pace between 5k and 2k and 500 meter time suggests to me that maybe just maybe you might benefit from some longer distance workouts focused primarily on technique. Believe it or not longer distance pieces ( 6000-1200m) actually can contribute to better 2k times as well. Just my 2cents
A 6:32 2k is still very good!!! Faster than this old geezer can do!!! But who knows, with proper technique you probably could get that 2k time down in low 6ss or even sub 5 what's your best in 5k??
@Airman749 Thanks Airman. I'd like to aim for sub 6:20 next once I've hit my sprint targets. 5k time is currently 17:54.7, so plenty of room for improvement.
I can't believe the cross fit idiots!!!!!!! Please 500 meters is for wimps!!!! Let's see what he can do in a 2000 or better yet 10000!! Anybody who actually knows rowing knows rowing at df of 170 is dumb!! His technique is unbelievably horrible!!! It's all upper body
@Airman749 it was rubbish back then - 2 years ago. Did you see the next one from 12 months later - 1:20.6 for Silver? Did 1:22.9 this year for a Bronze. I enjoy it, it's fun! (Graham) 2k time admittedly is not great, 6:32.8.
read this dudes web page - he has gone from like 18 stone and no training for 12 years to being able to come second to rob smith (world record holder)in 12 months !! in latest videos.... and theres one of like a 220kg deadlift... respect!
read this dudes web page - he has gone from like 18 stone and no training for 12 years to being able to come second to rob smith (world record holder) in latest videos.... and theres one of like a 220kg deadlift... respect!
@paigntonleisureclub no problem. could i ask though..... when im doing my tabata rowing workouts.. hell it feels like i am going fast and the stroke metre sometimes says 80 plus... but /500m is like 1:45-7 at best. and theres a video or mr rob smith doing 500m in what 1:39? and his stroke metre resads about 56 or someting...i just can getm y head around where the power is getting chanelled from..
My technique back then was rubbish, and my pacing was suicidal. I was new, fresh to the sport and just 'had a go'. It was an honour to meet Rob Smith before and after the race, and to watch his boat storm ahead on the big screen! I have improved, but you can still slate the technique here by all means if it makes you feel good. The video response was after 12 months of training, quicker, smoother but still not perfect obviously!
Okay, people are confused. Rob Smith is not the main guy in the video. If you wait for the camera to move, Rob Smith is the monster sitting to the far right in the Navy blue unisuit with the white stripe down the side. The camera zooms in around 40 seconds in. He did set a world record at the time though I don't know if it still stands.
As for Graham's fly and die... you can only learn from it and go faster next time. Still hard work to fly and die. Good effort.
I lost 47lbs since this video, 14.5lbs in 6 days (link to diet above right in description). Helps not ahvgin a belly to get in the way on compression!
Graham blew up :) But understandably, the form at the end went out the window. Have to hand it to him, he tried and didn't do too bad until 1/2 way through. More legs, keep the back straight and use less arms. You can get much more output this way.
@thesku11s it varies on the individual. A lot of people will choose somewhere between 140 to 170 df for a 500m (depending on machine, level 6-9 usually). You have to get the balance right between 'purchase' and ability to keep 'form'.
I had a quick go on one in my gym, got 2.00 on my first go for 500m at number10.
Is this pathetic? Im looking for some sort of conditioning challenge at the moment, if I keep at this at least once a week, is a time close to 1.15 unlikely?
@thesku11s Drag factor is irrelevant - it simply means you have to take less, harder strokes in your case. Keep it at between 4-5 for normal erging, slightly higher for sprints. 1.15 is beyond the reach of all but very few human beings - I've been rowing for a year now and will happily settle for 1.28s or so.
Oh right, I didnt realise it worked like that. So Its like gears? More resistance lets you go faster/further with more force?
I am hopeful for a decent time, like I said I only tried once first time. This is a fun little sideline goal to make warm up in the gym more interesting!
@thesku11s Do some proper rowing - long pieces (e.g. 2x6km) using good technique. Doing a 500m sprint on occasion isn't going to drive your times down at all, and you might well end up injuring yourself. Before a race at that kind of pace you'll need to have warmed up for at least ten minutes anyway.
i agree a little more legs wouldnt hurt but this is a sprint hes getting himself into the strongest position possible while also trying to rate high. Where he is getting to on the slide is a powerful position which he can also rate the shit out of it with. Indoor rowing is a different sport to actual rowing, im a water rower but i get annoyed when water rowers are telling indoor rowers how to do their sport
i could get a first timer on the erg to have better form than this in one hour or less. pathetic form here, specially the front guy closest to the camera towards the end
Knees... bend... less... during... sprints... stop criticizing the competitors if you've only ever competed in the 2k, or if you've never put thought into what technique makes a good erg time versus what technique makes a good time on the water.
great, well done. I bettered it in Manchester - 1:23.5s and am losing some of those KGs as I write to try and get under 1:20. What's your time Thomas?

@Airman749 it was rubbish back then - 2 years ago. Did you see the next one from 12 months later - 1:20.6 for Silver? Did 1:22.9 this year for a Bronze. I enjoy it, it's fun! (Graham) 2k time admittedly is not great, 6:32.8.

Hah, id love to be in a race like this :D at age 17 i think i would still make a podium finish.

read this dudes web page - he has gone from like 18 stone and no training for 12 years to being able to come second to rob smith (world record holder)in 12 months !! in latest videos.... and theres one of like a 220kg deadlift...

The video response was after 12 months of training, quicker, smoother but still not perfect obviously!
paigntonleisureclub 1 year ago
Okay, people are confused. Rob Smith is not the main guy in the video. If you wait for the camera to move, Rob Smith is the monster sitting to the far right in the Navy blue unisuit with the white stripe down the side. The camera zooms in around 40 seconds in. He did set a world record at the time though I don't know if it still stands.
As for Graham's fly and die... you can only learn from it and go faster next time. Still hard work to fly and die. Good effort.
madbuddha7 1 year ago
Well that was some fucking bad technique, I'm 13 and I have a much better technique than him. But he set a world record so I guess it's cool.
Will.
JcGWAMPROD 1 year ago
fucking awful technique. He used no legs and just hauled on it with his arms... but hey he set a world record so kudos to him.

i like how everyone who comments on this video almost set a world record xd

1.29 still a bloody good effort, and you admit yourself that there is plenty of room for improvement
pup2000jd 1 year ago
you have no slide. get up further and make the strokes longer and you will go a lot further faster!

why are they showing this fat slob?

That wasn't the guy who got the world record. This guy got 1 .29 or somer

Given the Matt Pinsent finished the 2001 National Indoors with a 500 of sub-1.15 split, I'd say that this is NOT a world record 500 meters!

The rowing technique I see in this video is so horrendous that it makes me feel like an Olympian.
I like this video!

I like how the last few strokes were pure arms. If you watch the slide for the last bit there is a distance of about 5 inches covered tops

I lost 47lbs since this video, 14.5lbs in 6 days (link to diet above right in description). Helps not ahvgin a belly to get in the way on compression!

no compression...
ReDHoTChiliPeppERlov 2 years ago
Graham blew up :) But understandably, the form at the end went out the window. Have to hand it to him, he tried and didn't do too bad until 1/2 way through. More legs, keep the back straight and use less arms. You can get much more output this way.

What resistance do people use in contests like this?
(concept rower in my gym has 1-10)
thesku11s 1 year ago
@thesku11s it varies on the individual. A lot of people will choose somewhere between 140 to 170 df for a 500m (depending on machine, level 6-9 usually). You have to get the balance right between 'purchase' and ability to keep 'form'.
paigntonleisureclub 1 year ago
@paigntonleisureclub
I had a quick go on one in my gym, got 2.00 on my first go for 500m at number10.
Is this pathetic? Im looking for some sort of conditioning challenge at the moment, if I keep at this at least once a week, is a time close to 1.15 unlikely?
thesku11s 1 year ago
@thesku11s Drag factor is irrelevant - it simply means you have to take less, harder strokes in your case. Keep it at between 4-5 for normal erging, slightly higher for sprints. 1.15 is beyond the reach of all but very few human beings - I've been rowing for a year now and will happily settle for 1.28s or so.
Dagon368 1 year ago
@Dagon368
Oh right, I didnt realise it worked like that. So Its like gears? More resistance lets you go faster/further with more force?
I am hopeful for a decent time, like I said I only tried once first time. This is a fun little sideline goal to make warm up in the gym more interesting!
thesku11s 1 year ago
@thesku11s Do some proper rowing - long pieces (e.g. 2x6km) using good technique. Doing a 500m sprint on occasion isn't going to drive your times down at all, and you might well end up injuring yourself. Before a race at that kind of pace you'll need to have warmed up for at least ten minutes anyway.
Dagon368 1 year ago
i can do about 1.40 for 500m. Im 98kg, 1.93m, 32Y, im giving 150% but im stack. Something is wrong with my technique i think
glaros0 2 years ago
Meant to say - I've lost 3 stone since then too! 300m PB tonight, 44.9s 1:14.8 ave pace r52/

Very inefficient technique. If you would use your legs you would probably get under 1.20 since you have massive strength!
jurjan 2 years ago
i agree a little more legs wouldnt hurt but this is a sprint hes getting himself into the strongest position possible while also trying to rate high. Where he is getting to on the slide is a powerful position which he can also rate the shit out of it with. Indoor rowing is a different sport to actual rowing, im a water rower but i get annoyed when water rowers are telling indoor rowers how to do their sport
AxelPRC 2 years ago
your supposed to use your legs dude

i could get a first timer on the erg to have better form than this in one hour or less. pathetic form here, specially the front guy closest to the camera towards the end
realmenrowport1 2 years ago
It is bad form, agreed. I was very raw back then! Have improved since though. Thank you for watching.
paigntonleisureclub 2 years ago
Got it down to 1:22.2 in May, now knocking on the door of 1:20, 300m PB is 45.5s. Getting there, slowly but surely....

Knees... bend... less... during... sprints... stop criticizing the competitors if you've only ever competed in the 2k, or if you've never put thought into what technique makes a good erg time versus what technique makes a good time on the water.

terrible form. Not even good when weight adjusted. Good erger, bad rower, simple as that.

great, well done. I bettered it in Manchester - 1:23.5s and am losing some of those KGs as I write to try and get under 1:20. What's your time Thomas?

ok 1:23 is nice :)
hmm bit ago but must be about 1:27 now

if you bent your knees a bit more you would get longer more powerful strokes. good time for ya though eh! and holy cow a good time for rob smith!
