Can anyone tell me why runners were dropping out of the race like flies. The white guy who lead for a lap and a half for instance? Injuries or did they just hit a wall pushing themselves too hard?
The runners that drop out in a world class event such as the 2007 Prefontaine Classic typically do so on purpose. They go into the event as 'rabbits' or pacers for the rest of field which will include one, two, possibly three runners in outstanding form who are seeking a world, track, and/or year best time for the event.
. These 'rabits' or pace runners are essentially running their own race with their own goals which is why you see the lead runner in the early laps check his watch as he nears the 800 meter mark, his goal being to bring the rest of the field through the halfway mark in world record setting time somewhere around the 1:50 minute mark. Sadly, the lead runner in this event lost steam over the last 60 meters, slowing the field down some three seconds... (Imagine Komen running a 3:45 mile!?!)
In World Championship races pace setters are not allowed, as most competitors entered all favor or at least should favor their own chances at winning. Some European track meet promotors seeking a 'world record' spectacle at thier venue will actually 'hire' accomplished runners to serve as runners with bonus cash incentives for taking the field through predetermined times at specified intervals (e.g. 400 meter mark 49.5 sec, 600 meter mark 1:16... for an 800 meter world record shot).
Rabit Running sound fun? Here are some tips... 1) Don't flail your arms about or shift your running line in the curve/straight as this makes your inevitable passing harder to gauge and execute 2) Run even splits... don't accelerate, decelerate, and accelerate again as such adjustments wear down the following pack and defeat the benefit of a fast race start if the remaining competitors don't have the ability for a fast race finish.
3)Don't slow down you coward! Step off the track first (inside pref, never on a curve) before you let that pace slow. Oh, and if find yourself nearing the finish line, with no one else in sight, and still got a little bounce left in the ole legs...take it home! After all, if no one has had the strength to follow you, why not beat the hounds at their own game and finish as the winner? It's been done before!

Komen is my pick to win the 1500 in Beijing. When he is on, he is extremely hard to beat. This has been the case for a decade now. His WR is the 3K is one that will take a superhuman performance for someone to surpass.
The Komen you are thinking about is "Daniel Kipngetich Komen." He holds world records in both indoor and outdoor 3000 meters: Indoor record of 7:24 and outdoor record of 7:20. Their is a video of his outdoor 3,000 meters "WR" in you tube. His indoor record of 7:24 is usually considered "Mount Everest" in the athletics circle. However, The young "Daniel Kipchirchir Komen" is someone to watch out for going into Beijing '08 Olympics.
Komen and Webb are definitly going to be battling it out, if komen could run 3:48 about 2 months before webb broke the AR, komen has got to be in shape for a 3:46 now
its a different daniel komen guys, not the 3k world record holder

there actually was a 3:46 ran in 1981 on the fifth ave mile but that is on the roads downhill so that is probably the fastest track mile....

Is the 5th Avenue Mile a downhill road race? I think that it is a falt and straight road race.

Heck of a race by Daniel Komen. Fastest mile ever run in the U.S. And a 27 second last 200 meters isn't to shabby either.
