"Joe hesitates as Ratso darts into traffic against a red light, yelling unheard obscenities at a cab driver who blasts his horn. Joe runs recklessly forward as Ratso slams the taxi fender with his fist, pretending to be hit, falling into Joe's arms. The taxi stops, halting traffic. Ratso, recovers, strolls casually in front of the cab, biting his thumb at the driver."
@Huesos138 I guess it always will be up to question. Dirtector claims one thing, Hoffman claims another. As for the script, well... I guess evryone one YT has a "copy".
No, everyone on youtube doesn't have a copy of the script. I found a copy however. I'm sure that if you google the quote I made above, you'll find one to.
copying something is not parody. you have to have the element of exaggeration. the scene in b2the future is notan exaggeration of the midnight cowboy clip, its just less subtle.
they also spoofed it in forrest gump, it was real funny cuz it was when forrest was pushing lutenant dan across a new york street a cab almost hit dan and dan's like "IM WALKIN' HERE!" and he has no legs... get it?
The cab was driven by a hired actor during a scripted take, and the production team filmed it to look like an ad-lib. However, Hoffman told it differently on an installment of Bravo's Inside the Actors Studio. He stated that there were many takes to hit that traffic light just right so they didn't have to pause while walking. . Hoffman wanted to say "We're filming a movie here!", but he decided not to ruin the take.
@happy543210 I wish I could post the link to Hoffman's Actor's Studio interview so it was only a click away. Youtube prevents link posting to avoid spam now, I think. Did you actually watch it?
In any case, we can agree to disagree, but I'll take the word of someone who was in the movie, on the set, over someone who's watched it and maybe read a book about it written by someone else who wasn't there.
The beautiful thing is, it wasn't planned. The shot was on a "live" set since Midnight Cowboy was low-budget and couldn't shut down a New York Street. The taxi cab turned a corner and nearly took Hoffman out, and he didn't break character. Now that's acting.
@Kozakaiya That would explain why he actually did break character. I was wondering about that while watching the complete film. His voice goes completely out of character, but I guess it's acceptable to most people, including the director and editor.
@Kozakaiya Sorry, you're wrong. Dustin Hoffman was interviewed about this scene and confessed to doing many takes so they could get the timing perfect.
Re: happy543210 I'm not wrong. Look for Dustin Hoffman's interview on the Actor's Studio. He answers this question at 5:50 of clip #3 of the Spanish subtitled version on YouTube.
What he says is, they did many takes because they couldn't get the timing of their pacing to coincide with the traffic light turning green, so that they didn't have to break stride in the shot. On the one take they got the timing right, the unscripted cab came out of nowhere.
I disagree. The near-miss with the cab is the setup for the punch line, "That aint a bad way to pick up insurance." Without it, the joke won't work. Unless you think Hoffman came up with that line on the fly. Hoffman's good, but I don't think he's THAT good.
This has to be one of the most parodied lines in movie history. Not only in Back to the Future II and Forrest Gump as aforementioned, but also in Miss Congeniality ("I'm gliding here!"), Disney's Hercules (involving a chariot on the streets of Thebes), and many other acts including Monty Python, the Muppets and Flight of the Conchords. Not many movies can boast such a lasting legacy.
The hand gesture is soo funny

The way the cigarette falls out of his mouth as he's beginning to respond to the cab driver was hilarious!

You can tell it's improvised....if you listen Hoffman breaks character and speaks in his own deep voice rather than rizzo's nasal one...

Is it in character or is it Hoffman the intense young actor getting pissed off at being interrupted by some cabbie?
graemeoliver84 7 months ago
There's also an allusion in Miss Congeniality, where Sandra Bullock says "I'm gliding here", trying to mimic Michael Caine's pageant walk.

This is an actual quote from the script:
"Joe hesitates as Ratso darts into traffic against a red light, yelling unheard obscenities at a cab driver who blasts his horn. Joe runs recklessly forward as Ratso slams the taxi fender with his fist, pretending to be hit, falling into Joe's arms. The taxi stops, halting traffic.
