wow, what a memory, never knew what happened to this song. thanks for posting this. I heard this on the radio traveling to northern mich, ages ago cool thanks great song.
Lenny O'Henry Across the Street sound like something tthat Marvin Gaye and the Temptations with David Ruffin on lead vocals with help from Brenda Holloway and Kim Weston in the female backing vocals and Billy Preston too on organ.
if Billy wouldve join Motown after leaving Sam Cooke's label after his death.or Frankie Valli 4 Seasons wouldve sung it.when i sang it i sound like Frankie Valli and David Ruffin

works for me...i still have the orig 45 i bought in 1964...still mint...i think it did get pretty good airplay in detroit...but thats a long time ago. ....great song !...thanks for posting.
A few years after the original release around the summer of 1966 my brother and I who were just children in Myrtle Beach played this song, Soulfinger(by the Bar-kays), and Beatles records to death on our portable record player. What a fun song and a fun time it was to be around and so much good music to be listened to! Lenny O'Henry's vocals were great. We also spent many weekends at Cecil Corbett's "Beach Club" with our Mom catching the live acts in a time when music was still musical.
there ain't no way for me to say goodbye, uh, across the street gonna go and get my Millie, make her feel silly, ooh knock out Willie. There's a lesson she's got to learn, I'm never gonna let her return across the street (organ) Across the street gonna go and get my Millie, make her feel silly ooh knock out Willie. There's a lesson she's got to learn, I'm never gonna let her return across the street.
Across the street there's a party goin' on, laughin' and a dancin' ooh romancin', everyone's invited but me, I'm feelin' just as bad as can be, across the street through my window I can see there's my best friend Willie ooh with my Millie making out behind my back like all the other wolves in the pack across the street. Don't you know you're better off just say you're finished now, she'll never be faithful to a single guy. Oh no no no no say it isn't so, (CONTI NUED IN NEXT POST)
olrjr, I had my first job as a DJ in 1964, at age 16, and I played this song all summer long. I recorded it on cassette and I've listened to it all my life. It's one of my favorites. Now it's on my IPod. I'm going to make another post immediately after this one with the lyrics for you.
Oh my God! I have been looking for this song's title for the longest. It is definitely a classic that isn't appreciated very much by the radio stations of today. What a shame...if you have the lyrics too this classic gold song I would appreciate it too being posted here. Thank, thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing. I love it!
A hidden gem., it barely made the Top 100I remember hearing it back in '64 for just a couple weeks. I had forgotten all about the song until I found it listed in Dave Marsh's book "The Heart of Rock 'N Soul". I sought out the song and found it on a compliation of beach music.

Yeah, but I gotta tell eringobrath1965 that Lenny O'Henry ain't gonna knock out WILLIE !
If he did he would be attacking the wrong brother.
Cuz it's BILLY that's messin' with his girl.
See, that's how trouble begins...

I also want to thank Aseventh for the lyrics. I always enjoyed this record, but after 45 years I finally understand the words.
