I really enjoyed "Whale Rider" since a pastor in Hawaii gave us a copy in 2005. It's a wonderful view into Maori culture and history. Also very relevant to how many indigenous young people grow up with less than ideal family situations, and learn to accept God's role and identity for them in society and be richly blessed. I recently visited New Zealand and also recommend a 2010 really funny DVD, "Boy" I think both are available on Amazon, but "Boy is only in PAL format just now.
There's not another movie to which I could compare Whale Rider. It's on a level all of its own. Every time I see it, another truth is revealed in it. It's like reading a proverb one day, and its meaning hits you in a certain way, and then reading it again another time when you are in a different situation, and its meaning changes; you see it from a different light. Only great works have that ability.
A beautiful, inspiring movie in which a young female has to "prove" herself in a male-dominated/brainwashed tradition. Once we get past "gender" among other things...we may just save ourselves.

kia orana i am a descendent of [paikea from the island of mauke i am from the direct line of paikea if you want to know more about the paikea legend your best to go back to where he first came from and where he origainates from yes the whale rider was a great movie but it would have been greater if it traced back where paikea originated from.
Whale Rider was written by Witi Ihimaera whom based it on the story of Paikea.
Paikea aka Kahutia o te Rangi whom came from Hawaiki ( East polynesia) arrived in Ahuahu, Great Mercury Island, Aotearoa. So, yes we do have to pay homage to the tangata whenua o Mauke
Ngati Porou whakapapa to Paikea son of Taneuarangi and Rongomai tahanui as well as Kahitia o te Rangi aka Paikea son of Uenuku and Rangatoro. The previous Paikea was in Aotearoa generations before.
nahh.. actually could be !.. but nahh, merely looking at the ocean, from a window.. thinking a blue whale was going to jump out of the sea, and gobble up the house. .. reminds you of pinokio

Sorry. I believe it's hypocrisy when you care about mammals in the sea, but you skip the problem of people in Africa and other painful places around the world.
i'm not maori descent, I'm black. I didnt even see the movie before i made this. but i figured the movie had a significant importance with whales so i put whale pictures and things to do with the ocean. I just loved the song so much i had to put some pictures behind the song
