Truly a sad story of your father, I cant help but tear up thinking about it, it reminds me of my father. what a great person he was. My mother said to me once, we are all given a number when we arrive here, you just don't know when your number is up. live life now!
Gotta comment. There's about this this song that just touches the soul. Everything about it is soulful. Not to try to change the type of music it is--southern rock to the core. But this is why music is so universal: all of this from the opening guitar bend to the "Nah, nah..." part at the end comes straight out of this man's heart to gut of anyone listening.
this is a bitch to fined , Thats why im buyin it on Itunes right now!!!! Check out Andy Adedort he is Dicky Betts guitarist he is unreal, my son just played with him in NY Bobby Paltauf srvzepp

My Father was in a motorcycle crash on July 1st. It put him in a coma due to severe brain injury until the beginning of September. When he woke he had to be placed into a nursing home. He no longer remembers me or my brothers. If anything in this world can make me remember who he was, it's this song. It takes me to a place that I know we will never be again. I'm 22 years old and never needed my father more. I still have hope that he will regain his memory but I know that he'll never be the same.
@ginoandmiranda very sad to hear about your father. You are right about using Music to help re-awaken him. And there is 1 other very powerful modality that will help him regain his mind...get him on a computer as fast as possible. I have helped rehabilitated ALOT of ppl w/brain injuries/trauma's thru the use of pc's. I know where he is at, ben there myself...be more than glad to help you to help him. Contact me, will be my honor to help bring your father back. Namaste!
@ginoandmiranda my dear take hold of the fact your father loves you,and only his injury prevents him from knowing,my father died last month and didnt care nothing about me. i had no closure never will except with his ghosts,
@ginoandmiranda I am so sorry this has happened to you my friend. It must be hard to listen to this song.Never say never miracles do happen.Either way I will keep you and your brothers in my prayers.
@ginoandmiranda play him this song and the ones he realy liked its been prooven to bring back memory and triggers the brain to work again true story bro!
@ginoandmiranda God bless you and your dad. It's hard, but be strong. This song must just tear you up, baby. I can't even listen to songs that remind me of my daddy.
This is a great song. Im proably close to your fathers age . Nods, 22 years young/old U are. . On the flip side of the coin . He survived and woke from a coma .. in his mind ..yet alone and lost from any memories. That would be most scarey . Im sure he has never needed U more even if it does not seem so . Dont give up or lose hope . bless u
im confused. did greg allman ever play in drive by truckers? and skimming down the comments to try and find the answer i saw some R.I.P. comments...but he's not dead. i dont think.
Amazing that this version is closest to the" Laid Back" version I've heard lately which IS THE BEST INTERPRETATION OF THIS CLASSIC. Still remember listening to it on the old Wurlitzer at Dangerous Dan's Drive In .
To my Michael who passed on 8/19/2011. Miss you so much!!!! Friends forever and my love also, i miss you!!!!! You were always my Midnight Rider since 74!!!!!!
Saw the Allman Bros in NY a few years back - open air concert. Never heard them...all I knew of Greg was his time with Cher in the 70's...knew a little of Southern Rock (Skynyrd, 38 Special, et al from a bud in HS)...but when I heard this song it opened a big ole book of Southern Rock and opened my eyes and ears to some great music.
remember when this was a BIG HIT in 1974! Loved it then love it more now. What a great year that was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Remember like it were yesterday. Time waits for no one! Life is too darn short for stupid stuff.
Incredible version . Almost haunting ...Never heard this version before . Can't say whether i like it better than some of the others that I am familiar with . but I can say I will be playing this one since I found it. Awesome upload ! Thanks !
It's amazing how many great songs there are and how many great artists who write and sing them. Great Artists can get their message across without even using words...like at 3:42.....Nah Nah Nah Nah nah

Really didn't like to disappoint people with the missed shows but gotta pay attention to these things. Love y', GA
I saw Gregg live in Lahaina, Maui years ago. Hair flying in the breeze. Was a small outdoor concert and the band was "spot on". Incredible concert, Greg hits nerves of feeling and something that always affects you personally with his songs.
I was into the Allman Brothers in high school when they first started. Sure gland Gregg hung in there.
One of the best singles released. It was popular in early 1974 when I was in basic training, one of the few songs by a white boy. And if you listen to the song, you realize Greggs not that white. :-)

Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident While in the western part of Macon on October 29, 1971 during a band break from touring and recording, Allman was riding his motorcycle toward an oncoming truck that was turning well in front of him. Allman lost control of his Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle while trying to swing left,, crushing his internal organs. , he died several hours later, just weeks before his 25th birthday.

i honestly think i am the only fourteen year old who likes this song in whitby, thanks for the upload bro i've been trying to find this song ever since i saw walking tall
setting in a bar one night drinkin and raw orsters for a nickel this trampy looking guy comes in sets down at the panio starts to play and sing sounds pretty good i asked the waitress who it was and she says Greg Allman the owner lets him come in and play and drink for free one of the girls at the table asked who is Greg Allman we were all stuned
@thefabulousbugman: Yea, a believe Gregg was often back home back then visiting his mother, who still resides in Daytona. He was quite down about the collapse of the ABB and often very drunk then. Others around town have mentioned picking him up off the sidewalk frequently and helping him get home back in those days. Did you speak to him after he played?
What I like about this song, is that the first version was more upbeat, it sounded younger, more eager. This one is the same song, but its more tired, more lonely. Like the same guy who is getting worn out by life on the road.
Cruise down route 66 in the middle of the night blasting this bad ass song!, im going to need a good car, some money, and a permit because i live in Mexico.
I can't tell you how many times I played this song on my eight-track player while at 4th Bn. 10th Marines. I'd lay in my rack at night and smell the North Carolina breeze blow through the screens and wish like crazy I was home. This song was like a drug for me. It steeled me to get me through the intense lonely feelings. I'll like this song until I die.
A great song good southern rock, I grew up with this , You all have a nice day, We all need to stick together with what is going on in our country, and the world, we all need to be awake. I am awake from charles pass it on.
I don't know what this song has to do with "banging" Cher. I'm sure Elijah, the son of these two great artists, wouldn't appreciate the reference. Be cool.
In 1975 when I was 19, I smoked my first joint with a Jewish girlfriend & her Irish boyfriend. They had 2 little kids together (visiting their grandparents), and they planned to get married. She made french toast as we listened to Greg Allman's version of "Midnight Rider". I was happy as a lark! I like this version better than the Allman Bros. - but I like them as a group. Memories....(sigh.) :-)

@BeautyBdy I'll bet they never got married & the 2 kids who deserved a good father & mother rather than pot heads were piss poor parents because they would rather smoke dope and get high with you. BigbootyBdy you are right though that this is a good version of the midnight rider
@tonyrizzogood2balive Tony roni, surprisingly the couple DID marry and raised two of the best young people around. Both are college grads and excellent parents themselves. You know, a LOT of people (maybe your parents too!) smoked pot back in the day. Most enjoyed it and got over it - been there, done that. Meanwhile, I reminisce and Greg Allman's music will remain a wonderful part of my illustrious past. :-)

@aarfeld i can't remember the name but it was 1978 we were in a bar in Daytona Beach Fla.

Did you speak to him after he played?
aarfeld 10 months ago
@aarfeld no we were there on vacation and quite drunk by the time we left he left a little while before we did

What I like about this song, is that the first version was more upbeat, it sounded younger, more eager. This one is the same song, but its more tired, more lonely. Like the same guy who is getting worn out by life on the road.

Great song. Walking Tall remake back in 2004 with The Rock. The first time I ever heard this song in the movie.

@Charles4681
The comment about sticking together is ok but its time to act. Sticking together 'inside' isn't enough. Time to act, we've been pushed around enough.

I don't know what this song has to do with "banging" Cher. I'm sure Elijah, the son of these two great artists, wouldn't appreciate the reference. Be cool.

this group has pure talent and Greg is excellent on this song.

This version is excellent. Whole different slant. Nice spooky tone. Think I first heard it in sixth grade. Better era for music.
