I heard someone singing Freeborn Man on Sirius this morning and thought - Who would dare to record this great Jimmy Martin tune (Jimmy did such a great job) - then i saw on the display that it was Junior - well that's just fine with me.
This dude was playing like this since in the 50's, sheeeesh ! I first saw him when I was a young boy on the Grand Ole Opry, and he is still hot ! Give it what for Jr buddy !
does anyone know what set-up he uses, amps etc? thanks - love this real country stuff - you can see its influences in everything blues, rock etc... long live real musicians and music... fuckin love this!
Way too bad Nashville doesn't WAKE UP!!! They are letting way TOO many modernday Hank sr's, Waylons, Haggard's, and so on, pass through their grubby little fingers!
Just imagine what could happen if Guys like Junior Brown, had the backing of a major label like some of the American Idol Trash! Being a true honest to God working be looked upon as it is TODAY! Period. Point. Blank.
@OriginalBurton I don't think record labels have the money to back anybody anymore. . . It's a shame. . . but the best music you hear may be in some small bar just playing for the fun of it. . .
As we say on the jobsite, when somebody appreciates something it took more than a few trys to learn, and they ask, how'd you do that?! the answer is, "superhuman strength, and yeeeeaaaars of experience! Plus the man obviously loves what he does.
This was written by Mark Lindsay and Keith Allison of Paul Revere and the Raiders. It appears on the Alias Pink Puzz album. It has become such a bluegrass classic that it has been attributed to many others, mostly Jimmy Martin.
He's pretty much posessed!! I love this guy, I always have. There's nothing he did that I COULDN'T do....but the point is I would never think to do it. My brain doesn't let me play with that much reckless abandondment unless chemicals are involved!!! 5 stars for being a badass.
This was just perfect what jdmyerscountry said... after just watching this smokin' hot player doing those things to that thing that looks part Tele and part slide... Almost pornographic, but so beautiful.
I'm a very happy man right now this Christmas Eve.
I cannot stop watching him play this fairly easy song. Howver what he is doing within is lethally dangerous. Watch his right hand picking technique when going through the 3 chords He applies many different difficult styles, and has the left hand in perfect sync with his right hand. That right hand alternating with his pick, and fingers is total talent, and lots of long long hours spent woodshedding. I would do anything to learn his techniques. When you see guys like this, it makes you SMILE
there ain't nothin' compared to seeing Junior live. this video captures a bit of it, but still, when you see him live you realize he's one of the best performing guitar players alive. it's nutz
@MegaGristle The suit kinda gives him that Bonamasa thing & I would love to see both in the same show! I saw him in Colorado in a dink town close to the Utah border off I-70. It was awesome! Hearing people cheer for a song written in 1928 while they are toking up is too cool for words! Everyone can get something from his show!
The guy that first introduced me to Junior described him as Jerry Reed meets Jimi Hendrix lol The instrument was custom made for him btw. He calls it a guitsteel.
back in the early 90's a local writer described Junior as "Hendrix meets Ernest Tubb" with his patent taco-shaped cowboy hat. I haven't caught him for a while and will be watchin for his return...
Just saw him @ Antones. So drunk he cldnt talk, but did not miss 1 note on that guitar. All the singers (zac brown) left, all the pickers were mesmorized.
There's Nashville corporate country music and then there's Junior Brown. It's like cut and paste pop singers and bands, versus a truly original thinker. In other words, Junior Brown is awesome.
Nowadays, lame asses label this "alternative country." The idiots don't know the real deal when they hear it because they've been listening moronic mainstream pap all their lives.
Under-appreciated musical genius - saw him in a tiny club in Atlanta in the early 90s - unbelievable - best one to me is Stupid Blues - maybe because I "relate".
Love it! I've seen him a couple of times and he SMOKES! For the record, his rhythm section is pretty damn good too. The drummer on this particular song gets a WORKOUT. And you won't believe the sound the three of them can come up with during "Foxey Lady" by Hendrix.
The coolest thing about seeing him live is he's gotta have some sorda record for standing o's. The crowd i was in proly stood 50 times. He's a total crowd pleaser
