You can tell from that hatchet head geometry that it's designed to facilitate skinning, like an ulu, and thus is primarily a hunting hatchet. Such a hatchet allows you to carry a small crazy sharp knife like a mora, as an old-fashioned combo. There's an old saying -- a hatchet can do almost anything an outdoor knife would do, but not vice-versa. It's not a better-worse issue -- it's an option that's supported by a century of woods practice.
DUNGEON IRON WORKS, the owner, has just weeks ago, went into the business of manufacturing the largest axes in the world. For years, we have had the reputation of making the largest cleavers in the world, but for now, we are going to focus on axes.
If you would like to purchase the largest axe in the world, with serial number 2, for the first one went to a fireman in Michigan, then check it out on ebay by going to ebay, and typing in their search box: 130569369041, and feast your eyes upon it.
I have one of these. After 5 minutes of chopping, my handle mounting bolts all snapped. Made too thin. I'll machine a new heavier set. I still like the product, and use it all the time. The manufacture quality is good, sharpening was too coarse, I had to spend an hour to correct factory sharpening. I baton wood with it all the time. It has never failed me.
I AGREE! We had both a 5 lbs axe and a Heavy Bowie from KaBAR. EVERYONE wanted to use the KABAR and the axe stood 5 days jabbed in a tree. ALSO NO ONE wanted to carry the axe.
The hatchet blade is fully into that handle with bolts so the handle is not gonna fly off you fool. next time take it apart before you talk shit. and you put much more effort into using the k-bar and then you use the hatchet like a weakling. nice comparison. I love my k-bar too but don't be stupid. I have both hatchet is a better chopper DUUUHHHH.
This is the second review I've seen on this and has been helpful in reassuring me of not buying one. I have a Western Cutlery bowie knife that my uncle carried during his two tours of Vietnam that I've recently made my primary camping/survival tool that is similar to your Ka-Bar in this vid. I figured I had a great survival tool, why not us it instead of buying some cheap tool while it set on a shelf.
I mentioned on a separate review that the allen screws flew off when I used the bullseye hatchet on a camping trip. Very unreliable handle in my opinion. But like you said, if used to cut bone it shouldnt take more then a few hacks. But we were clearing out an overgrown bike trail and after about 2 minutes that sucker came apart.
We don't use an axe much. A knife can never replace an axe, but you can prepare plenty of firewood in most environements with a larger knife. A knife is easier to use and control than swining a larger or heavy axe or hatchet. Also a knife is lighter and easier to carry than most axes or hatchets. We find that a knife is also more versatile and will do several jobs well to justify the weight of carry verses an axe or hatchet that are single task heavy tools.
@oneraindog Ever try gutting an animal with an axe? cutting fish/rope/food, fighting, building, defending, open cans, start a fire....that's why its a SURVIVAL knife. You can hack, chop ,slash, jab, cut, baton,
@shtfprepared have you ever tried to do fine carving with a giant knife? skin a small animal? hell even a large one?
i wasnt trying to say that a hatchet should replace a knife. im saying i never understood why people want to replace the hatchet with a knife. its fine and well to show how well your knife chops down trees. but i see a lot of youtube vids showing knives cutting downtrees and not a lot of videos of knives doingwhat i always thought knives should do. guess thats not as interesting
i guess it's alright if you like to take your time with a slower drop swing. otherwise you'd risk hurting anyone near you chopping quickly or with a lot of force put into it.
that bowie did a nice job on that wood. I have a becker bk-7 (original) and its specs are pretty close to that bowie. I've used it to split wood. A decent woods knife isn't expensive. that bowie of yours looks like it sells in the $40-50 range. i can't understand why someone would buy a $20 bud-K quality knife when for not much more they could get good dependable equipment that lasts.
I'm a bit of a gear nut but not a gear snob, but if it says "Made in China" on it, in my experience avoid it. Look around for deals. I just bought a Fiskars Hatchet for $19 at sears sunday and a Fiskars Chopping axe for $23.
$12 for a garbage knife and a worse hatchet vs $19 for a real hatchet and a Mora goes for what $12? $21 difference for 5 times the quality.
Keep up the good work guys I love your videos. You just saved some sucker from buying bad equipment.

i do love your guys vids.
but why dont you do a comparison between the ka-bar and a real axe.
