Erik Marcus really got his butt handed to him by Gary Francione during their debate over welfare reform vs. abolition. It is long but its comprehensive in its destruction of the welfarist mentality. Google it!
@JoeJC: 1) I followed your advice and I looked up this debate, and at two and a half hours it is certainly long. This was my first experience with Gary Francione, and I found myself agreeing with many of his perspectives, but I also found his overall attitude and approach to be extremely contemptuous and lacking in any respect. He rails on the organizations like the HSUS for their finacial backing, but minutes later complains that Eric isn't using vegan.com to promote his books.
@JoeJC: 2) Overall, I came away from the 'debate' (if you can call it that amidst the constant interruptions and outbursts from Francione) feeling that both sides had definitive pertinence. My overall frustration is that Marcus tries many times to find a common ground, while Francione consistently tries to discredit Marcus' efforts in totality. I am not saying that I am lacking in respect for Francione, but his rhetoric throughout the debate serves to enforce the criticism that he is divisive.
This man's voice irritates me like no other.
