Most of the songs in the show aren't in scenes. The play stops and they sing songs separate from the action that use current language to comment on the action. I think it is to further relate the story to today. It's brilliant.

Everyone says this musical is so ground breaking...but compared to the play, it conservitive. In the play, the gay scene was NOT comic relief (the fact that it was in the mucial was kind of insulting), the hetro sex scene was a RAPE scene, and the ending was rather bitersweet. America has filtered Spring Awakening to make it as Disney and family-friendly as it can possibly be. Which is not to say that its not a good muscial. Its just not that hardcore, tell truth.

The play and the musical are two entirely DIFFERENT things. So what if in the play it's rape. The musical is an adaptation, not a direct book to stage production. It's not supposed to be as "hardcore" as the play.

And to some theater-goers, well...it IS groundbreaking.

I can't believe someone would diss Spring Awakening . . . I mean, I could understand if you had moral problems with it, but from the comment it seems you don't like the music.
