Most of the songs in the show aren't in scenes. The play stops and they sing songs separate from the action that use current language to comment on the action.  I think it is to further relate the story to today. It's brilliant.

The play and the musical are two entirely DIFFERENT things. So what if in the play it's rape. The musical is an adaptation, not a direct book to stage production. It's not supposed to be as "hardcore" as the play.

And to some theater-goers, well...it IS groundbreaking.

I can't believe someone would diss Spring Awakening . . . I mean, I could understand if you had moral problems with it, but from the comment it seems you don't like the music. I would disagree with the statement that this is "a song that's basically an excuse to say bitch 108 times in a span of three minutes." The music is complex, the acting and singing is fabulous, and the show deals with real problems of teenage life. You can disagree with its message, but 8 Tonys are not to be sneezed at.
