This reminds me of that firefighter / paramedic that got shot by a sniper in the U.S when they were responding to a truck fire.
Also reminds me of other paramedics I've done treatments along side of that told me of their instances.
Or when a group of teens in the U.K called the 999 number for an ambulance, and when they got there, they were stoned and stabbed and had their stuff taken.
Those are just SOME of the things I've heard / read about. It's disgusting.
Unfortunately we (paramedics) are registered by a body called the HPC. They are not interested in our well being in the slightest.
We have a "duty of care " . so even aresholes have to be pampered and don't forget if your ill and need an ambulance if your waiting longer than you have to it' usually coz we are taxing drunks or drugies coz "we have a duty of care!!
I agree. All the Pads out there - learn the difference between an ambulance and an APC, ok? You'll want to hit the Paras with rocks, and the big flashy thing that shows up when they've shot you? That's the ambulance.
Same type of stuff has happened to me, and I've learned that it doesn't matter if you're in the city or in the country, it's just as apt to happen in the one as it is in the other.
It's stunning that paramedics get attacked, is this a symptom of sectarian violence or is there another cause? And what types of people are attacking these poor people? Just curious
Loads of people attack us! Mainly it's drunk people, who have had too much to drink and don't like being woken up, other times it is people with a mental illness and other times it can be a patient with a medical condition (post-ictal or cerebrally confused), these are the ones we 'don't mind'. Honestly, it's a regular thing, I have been 'assaulted' twice in a shift before. It's rarely painful, and usually it's just a drunken twat!
Loads of people attack paramedics- it's mostly drunk patients who are asleep and then when we wake them up they decide to lash out at us because we disturbed their dream, or it can be a mentally ill patient who has a physcotic fear of the colour green or it can be a medically ill patient (i.e. someone who is cerebrally confused or post-ictal). Being 'assualted' isn't rare in EMS, but fortunately serious assaults are.
More PIFs should include the words "stop this madness". Preferably at the end.

The fact that people harm First Responders and don't realise that there's anything wrong with that boggles my mind.

It makes you wonder... If we got issued with Tazers would the number of assaults go down?
Probably not, because crews would be too afraid to use them coz of the paperwork that would no doubt be required for a 'tazer deployment'
Still an idea though....

I've been hit, kicked, spit on, and threatened with both knives and guns. The question is why do I keep doing this after all these years?

That there's a need for a PIF like this is incredibly fucked up. What the hell is wrong with people?!

It does seem very nihilistic in Northern Ireland.
