Asertix357 has i.d. the part, its the loading lever, this being a Black powder pistol(think of it as a repeating muzzleloader)looked like once the pistol was fired a few times, the metal expanded enought to stay put

I want to say that it acts as a 'verticle foregrip' sort of thing. My second guess is that it's the part that releases the clip.
