No, not live, I think. Sounds more like miming to the single on TV, a common affliction of the '50s and '60s (and '70s). Most TV producers then were more interested in predictability than in real performances.
wow wtf every video of the byrds playing eight miles high in their prime shows david crosby practically the whole time. Specifically I wanna see Roger while he's doing those lou reed esque solos. id be shitty if i were roger, crosby was always an attention whore
I thought "eight miles high and when you touch down, you'll find it stranger than known," perfectly sumed my LSD memories, so can you imagine how disappointed I was to find out that the song was simply about bloody airline travel, no less.
@keywestjj Oh yeah. Hey that's some smart thinking, why didn't I think of that. Duh! Now I remember, I fried what was left of my brains back in the 70's.
The camera is always focused on Crosby while McGuinn is the one playing those jazzy 12-string solos. You never see him. Most vidoes of this song do the same thing. In this one, there's only a few quick flashes of McGuinn, you barely know he's in the band. Maybe the camermen were big Crosby fans. I've never figured it out.
@jarboe2 I was thinking the same thing, where is RM? As late as '66, rock was deemed disposible music for youth ( 'groovy' effects which distract from what should be a document of an important band in it's prime) and no one would be watching it 50 years later. The director/cameraman wanted to foucus on the guy with the "far-out" hat. Didn't hurt that DC was center with only one camera. I doubt the TV crew knew the hierarchy/musicianship of the band, just instucted to shoot a "psychedelic" clip
This was according to McGuinn coming into London and making their way around that town. But remember this was the '60's and they still couldn't be benign about Drug use, even though it was going on surreptiously at the time. It suggests what lucy in the sky with diamonds was doing. Listen to what that Psychaedlic 12 string is doing.
I think McGuinn was on acid when he recorded this...that is the Worst solo lead guitar playing Ever!!!! I played like that when I was 14...actually I still play like that...maybe im on acid too. What century is it Man?
@kramrollin69 I bet you didn't play like that and never will, you don't even realise how clever it is what he's doing. I'm not much into the Byrds but this has JAZZ in it. Great track, great solo, completely fits the song.
@1Mehring1 Actually, I bet I could play as bad as McGuinn has on this song. Oh Im sure he's clever when he recorded this, If he even remembers!! :). Like Wow Man, that was a trip!! Did we play a song???
@kramrollin69 The same could be levelled at any number of modern jazz musicians, who, spaced out on weed, smack and anything else going, were often insensible as they made their greatest, ground breaking performances, performances of much greater depth and complexity than McGuinn. The trouble here, though, is your prosaic perception.
@1Mehring1 My perception is fine thankyou, how is your prosaic perception? This performance is a long way off McGuinn's ground breaking performances, he did much better in other songs. Tho this song is ethereal. Nevertheless, your comments have been entertaining, Im sure we can all see the humorous side of your "seriousness". Now take another pill and chill.:).
McGuinn is on the far left - Clark is not in this video as he had left the band by this point. He is singing lead on the track - which was recorded before he left.
Not live - since you can hear Gene Clark on the lead vocal - but he is not here since he left a couple months earlier. Also most of the song was completed by Clark - Crosby added one lyric and McGuinn the arrangement....
great song!! when crosby was in jail in west palm beach for weapon possession, my relative who worked at the jail asked for me for his autograph he wanted to trade for a carton of cigarettes, i gave him a pack and i got his autograph!! david crosby and i have something in common, we both have been given a second chance with a liver transplant. my transplant anniversary was June 4 , a total of seven years so far! rock on!
@myryckyz I thought that was Clark, Hillman and Crosby (from left), but thought for sure McGuinn had to be there somewhere. Guess he was not in this video? He does play the guitar solo on this song though, right? TIA for any info.
@leamanc That's McGuinn with the twelve string Rickenbacker. Although he played some guitar, with The Byrds he played harmonica and tambourine. He sang too, most notably the lead on "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better"
Roger is not wearing hs glasses, but that's him. Roger does play the solo, but they are lip syncing. Gene is not there because he had left the band for a time.
@jesicanjam Thanks for the info. I obviously don't know my Byrds very well :-) I am more of a Gene Clark solo fan (White Light and No Other are awesome in my book).
Fantastic song, a classic and highly influential. As for the video, it's a live performance of lip-synching to the recorded song. Only half good. Primitive visuals. Talk about dated...
I bought a bootleg in Greenwich Village in the early 90s called, "Byrds on the Wyng" which has an instrumental version of Eight Miles High, great piece of vinyl. A great find.
@Vorrox Well, it's all about labeling a band by their critics or fans, etc. The band can cover any ground they want, really. However, match those promo visuals with that of early UFO! Interesting how it seemed part and parcel
@Vorrox The British band UFO invented Space Rock, not Pink Floyd or the Byrds! haha. Roger Waters says his band is about Inner-Space, not Outerspace...Can you dig it, man?
I was bon Aug 1966, this proves I've been alive to enjoy the best music the World has ever known, until the last 15 years, where we've regressed back to before the 50s/60s
@Vorrox Nah man! That poorly played nothin is far out intergalactic space LSD tripping you dig? It's so far out man you gotta jus dig the noise. Oh what!! wow!! Yeah. Dont' be so square and get on the bus.

nothing 'satanic'about this song-try stairway to heaven or hotel california for that devil shit, this song about a trip to london 'grey grey town known for its sound' 'black limousines' all those black taxis in london plus black daimlers and bentleys, 'small faces'-steve marriott.
People often associate this song with drugs (as did the establishment), however, Roger McGuinn has stated that it was inspired by The Byrds first trip (no pun intended, good one huh?) to London. If any of you ever bothered to actually listen to or read the lyrics and had any knowledge of London, you would be able to understand this.
oh BS, it was a song Gene Clark wrote about flying in airplanes , which he didnt like, with some other "paintings" in it lyrically, satanic was not one of them, nor was lsd or drugs, shessh
Husker Du covered this in the 80s, probably the 1st time I ever heard a cover that was better then the original, If you can handle hardcore or course.
@johansson66 Roxy Music covered this in the 80s, probably the 1st time I ever heard a cover that was easily better than hardcore piffle, if you can handle style and substance, such as Mr Ferry and Co. do so well
@thepossessor Listen to the words! It's not about anything satanic. You might as well say everything has a satanic subtext! I think YOU have a satanic subtext! Good grief. Get your head out of whatever dark place it's in and get outside.
@thepossessor Nonsense, it was written whilst they flew to London, hence the references to the 'grey town' and 'small faces'. The words of Clark and Crosby, not mine.
Isn't that Gene Clark in the hat who was the true star in the early days and main songwriter, Chris Hillman in middle on bass, Roger McGuinn on left and Michael Clarke on drums...although it says it's the original quintet and lists Crosby's name, there are only 4 guys there! David was responsible for their signature harmonies. Gene died in 91 at age 46 from a heart attack due to heavy drinking...McGuinn still tours as a solo artist and David Crosby will be 70 next year...yikes!
@aiames I'd say, because the camera crew thought that he was either the lead guitarist or the lead singer (as theý usually tend to focus on this person). Actually he was none of them. McGuinn of course plays the solo, and there really is no lead singer; essentially McGuinn and Crosby sings "close harmony" throughout the entire song.
So COOL. Glad that Crosby is the focal point of most of this video.
