To be honest the cop was a little to forceful. All she had to do was grab the woman's arm an handcuff her if she refused to release the knife, not slam her to the ground. But at the end of the day we don't know what is going through the old woman's mind and she could have got annoyed but the cop n threatened her with the knife or she could have accidentally slashed or stabbed her so this is also another reason to use more force when making an arrest. It looked like this poor woman sustained a head injury. I could see puddles of what looked like blood on the Tarmac. I think that excessive force was definitely used, and hoped that the officers involved had some disciplinary action taken against them.

Also there was an incident at same store where white male had a knife. Police arrived and talked for 45minutes and didnt use force. And he was way younger than this woman.
I shot the video. She had dementia and was in the process of moving with her daughter. Daughter went inside the store leaving mother in car. Mother then cut herself out of seatbelt because she cant unbuckle belt. Sweep was textbook but not for an 84 yr old woman. Enough officers were present to disarm her without causing harm. Also could have talked to her for longer than 19 seconds. I think that would have helped.

First it was only 16 seconds from the time the LEO asked her to put the knife down to the time she was taken down. It takes up to 15 minutes to persuade my grandfather to get up from his chair. So if you see her ignore your orders she may be mentally disabled,as in this case she was. So you have to look for the best way to disable the threat without hurting the perpetrator,any body else around and yourself.If you cant do this then dont become a cop.It means that you are mediocre if you cant find an easier way to disarm a lil ol lady

To be honest the cop was a little to forceful. All she had to do was grab the woman's arm an handcuff her if she refused to release the knife, not slam her to the ground. But at the end of the day we don't know what is going through the old woman's mind and she could have got annoyed but the cop n threatened her with the knife or she could have accidentally slashed or stabbed her so this is also another reason to use more force when making an arrest. I shot the video. She had dementia and was in the process of moving with her daughter. Daughter went inside the store leaving mother in car. Mother then cut herself out of seatbelt because she cant unbuckle belt. Sweep was textbook but not for an 84 yr old woman. Enough officers were present to disarm her without causing harm. Also could have talked to her for longer than 19 seconds. I think that would have helped.

Someone called the police on this woman for acting suspicious with a knife in a crowded parking lot. The officer did the right thing. But they try to hide it by defending blacks and mentioning that they are white. Color only matters to those who pay attention to such things. Those are the racists.

This video pissed me the fuck off. I didnt see not one time on this video where the old lady tried to cut the cop. They didnt give her time to put the knife down before they slammed her. Regardless of what the situation may be she was a elderly woman and they could've handle the situation a hell of alot better than what they did. Give a idiot a badge and shit like this happens. You wonder why so many people hate cops. Had it been my mother or grandmother i would beat the fuck out that bitch!

This is flat out excessive force, and if you think otherwise...well that's just idiotic. First it was only 16 seconds from the time the LEO asked her to put the knife down to the time she was taken down. It takes up to 15 minutes to persuade my grandfather to get up from his chair. Second, the officer put herself in harms way by getting so close to the suspect in the first place. Something tells me she could avoid grandma's "attack" if she chose to. This is abuse.

@djcatron11 How about first of all, calling for back up,and have another officer bearhug her from behind which should be very easy to do and then she just simply take the knife from her hand. Is that too hard to fathom. It's funny that you make a statement like "She's a danger to herself" as if you guys really give a fuck. So it's better to slam her head against concrete to avoid her from cutting herself,right? Sad to see that your a cop with that mentality.

@katkal3 There were other officers there first of all. Second of all, an old woman in a public area, with Alzheimers and a knife is a danger to herself. I've seen many people cut themselves on purpose and by accident because they were confused. Third of all, they didn't nor does any police officer intend to "slam heads" in the ground. As I said before, and will say it again, sometimes people get hurt when they get taken down. I'll say this again too, Obey the officer's command.

@katkal3 If you see an elderly person you should take into consideration the fact that she may be not all there upstairs due to her age. So if you see her ignore your orders she may be mentally disabled,as in this case she was. So you have to look for the best way to disable the threat without hurting the perpetrator,any body else around and yourself.If you cant do this then dont become a cop.It means that you are mediocre if you cant find an easier way to disarm a lil ol lady

From the safety of you home, behind a computer screen, you have never, nor will you ever find yourself in a situation like this. I do it almost all the time. You presume much. "Might not" and " should be" fill your replies. You presume your method is best and will work. Cops can't afford to make assumptions.

@katkal3 Prove me wrong or not it matters not to me but to you. If it were my granny I would have done a better job of taking care of her. Especially if I knew she was ill. I wouldn't have left her in the car, alone, with a knife handy. She should have someone looking after her not ditching her in a car like you would do to the dog. I don't do that with my kids, and they're healthy. I would make sacrifices and take care of her myself, but a last resort would be a nursing home.

Good thing there are police to deal with the bad guys so you can watch videos. All that training might go to waste. I believe you are the one who is perfect.

@katkal3 So now you admit that someone who was watching her made a mistake. So someone was at fault for not watching her. This is how kids go missing. Why not take her with you instead of leaving an elderly woman with Alzheimers in a car alone in a parking lot with a knife? It would have been easier to watch her if she's with you. I don't let my kids out of my sight or out of my grasp. Straight answer WAS I'd take better care of her, I'd watch her myself if I had to.

Reverse psychology, asking me what I'd do with my granny, I told you I wouldn't have left her alone. That avoids this whole situation. Bear hugging someone from behind creates a two person struggle. That's why we take them down to the ground. AGAIN people get hurt being taken down. Slamming her head to the concrete implies that she was grabbed and thrown by the head to the ground... not what happened. As a police officer I'll tell you that no encounter EVER goes the way you want. You're lucky if it just works out ok. Situations are far more complicated than a mere video shows.

I think the incompetent police officer who threw her on the floor, should be able to realize that one person walking with a cane at 80 years old it is not that strong.

@jaranega I'm trained to deal with many situations. Unfortunate things happen when you don't follow the officers commands. Notice how they wanted everybody back... that's so they can administer aid without all those people getting in the way or doing something. People should also keep in mind that this video and description was not on youtube BEFORE it happened. They had no way to tell what was wrong with her. Crazy people, high people, bad people, stupid people, I deal with it all so you don't.

All of your replies rely on "maybe" "should be" and " might." If our orders do not register then it is WE who need to take control of the situation before it gets worse. My point is why hurt her at first? It is quite different a young person not following orders then a old lady. wow she's paid her taxes and now she is just costing too much right??

Never heard the term "abuse of force." You mean excessive force. The intent was not to injure. I admit it looked bad, and injury is an unfortunate reality in police work. Constant power trip... I have less authority than the TSA, and I love giving it up, taking off my uniform when I come home to my wife and kids at night.
