Another favorite Lugosi film of mind.Bela was soo handsome in this movie. But then again he was just gorgeous in everything that he did. He was a beautiful person,I wish he was mine at one time.
Lugosi's one of my all time favorite actors. He drew you in so much and his hands and eyes themselves were characters. All those little movements he makes like clenching his fingers to summon his minions, drawing his hand back while trying to keep his temper down after the guy refused to shake it, and of course that famous stare of his were so hypnotic. The movie was good enough on it's own, but he stole every scene as usual. After Dracula and Ygor it's my favorite performance of his.
I don't know if this is Lugosi's best role, but it's certainly top 5, probably top 3!
I think his 5 best were:
As Count Dracula in "Dracula" (1931), as Dr. Miracle in "Murders in the Rue Morgue" (1932), as Murder Lugenre in "White Zombie" (1932), as the Sayer of the Law in "Island of Lost Souls" (1933), and as Dr. Vitus Verdigast in "The Black Cat" (1934).
@ToddCMorgan Great films all! One thing we can all agree Lugosi was at the top of his game at this point in time. It would be nice if somebody would remaster this film and clean it up. It is a classic.

Funny thing is Lugosi looks more like Dracula in White Zombie, with his pointed beard and pointy fingernails, then he did in the Universal Dracula.

Ridiculously boring film. No atmosphere at all.

This was possibly Lugosi's greatest ever role, and the zombies working the sugar mill was one of the greatest horror movie scenes ever filmed.
