Try to say Missour-EE with a dip in. I think that pretty much sums up why it's pronounced "Missourah" in the southern part of the state. Pronouncing it with an EE at the end is more trouble than it's worth.
It is MISSOURAH.... do the research, most people that say EE are ignorant of the fact that is it named after the indians "native Americans" called Missouria Indians......
Mostly older people just say Missour-AH

ouemessourita is siouan word for "those who have dug out big canoes."
The Missouri river is named for that word. The state in turn takes its name from that river.
It's Missouri with an EE inflection.
