Besides, this is no worse than a clock operator stopping the clock a second early or late on a play earlier in the game where the clock doesn't matter so much. Geez. If this had been at Michigan the operator would've let it run longer.

the announcers counting was terribly off, so that is understandable why he thought it was so "criminal". but the timekeeper did a great job and stopped it right when he should have. it was legit.
as another note, they should have had their timeout back from a few plays before when michigan had too many men on the field. no spike needed

The truth is this: he spiked the ball in time. Watch the video with no sound and watch the clock tick down. Then hit pause when the clock SHOULD have been at zero. You will find that at that point, the ball is already bouncing up from the turf. Michigan State won this fame fair and square.

@TheJimster222 the refs only do it manually when the clock isn't working or there is no visible play clock. they talked about this play all night on ESPN. they said the ref looks at the play clock and when it hits 0 he looks to see if the ball was snapped. the ball was snaped .12 seconds after the clock went to 0, meaning the ref didn't react fast enough to look to see the ball was snapped after the clock expired.

I can't believe this ending had any controversy whatsoever. Listen to how early these (U of M) announcers are counting down the clock compared to the actual on-screen game clock.
If you turn off the volume and count down yourself, you will see that the ball gets spiked a split-second before the clock would have hit zero. At the very worst, the spike was simultaneous -- but there's no way in hell that anyone with more than two functioning brain cells would argue that it came after.
This is why the official game time is now kept on the field by the refs. There is no way they had enough time to set and run the play. I'm not a Michigan fan in fact I'm about as far from it as possible.
Plain and simple the game was stolen and the last play should never have been ran.

There is no way that clock doesn't hit zero before the ball is on the ground. It should have hit zero with the ball in his hand as his arm is going down. That this is a dirty ending is simply indisputable

Been a Michigan fan my whole life, and I was pissed as hell when this happened. But I am telling you right now that this play is the source of more unnecessary controversy than any other play I have seen.
The truth is this: he spiked the ball in time. Watch the video with no sound and watch the clock tick down. Then hit pause when the clock SHOULD have been at zero. You will find that at that point, the ball is already bouncing up from the turf. Michigan State won this fame fair and square.

@spobrocy I've been saying that FOR-EV-ER but unfortunately, people aren't always interested in reason. Just because the clock stops at 0:01, nobody is necessarily saying there is a FULL SECOND left. All that is per se being said is that the final second HASN'T FULLY RUN yet. Like you said, if you countdown here and note when the ball hit the ground, the final second clearly had not run yet. Therefore, there WAS still time left in the game, even if it was just a split-second (or whatever).

@TheJimster222 the refs only do it manually when the clock isn't working or there is no visible play clock. they talked about this play all night on ESPN. they said the ref looks at the play clock and when it hits 0 he looks to see if the ball was snapped. the ball was snaped .12 seconds after the clock went to 0, meaning the ref didn't react fast enough to look to see the ball was snapped after the clock expired.

I can't believe this ending had any controversy whatsoever. Listen to how early these (U of M) announcers are counting down the clock compared to the actual on-screen game clock.
If you turn off the volume and count down yourself, you will see that the ball gets spiked a split-second before the clock would have hit zero. At the very worst, the spike was simultaneous -- but there's no way in hell that anyone with more than two functioning brain cells would argue that it came after.
