If you are a real film maker and not some prosumer or hobbyist then 40k is very affordable considering the simple fact that an independent can own a 4+ k
Digital camera opposed to renting a stock film based cam which includes purchasing and developing film itself. Longer production times = higher costs etc etc
I agree but image quality goes a long way to supporting the story as does great audio. For instance micheal Jackson made great music but the quality of his music was far beyond industry standards for top artist.
Everyone labors on about Film being better! Ofcourse its better to look at geeze its film. But we're not all Michael Bay or SS. Digital, and RED is the best next option for the rest of the industry who dont have million dollar budgets...
I'm starting to think haters, dont use their brains.. they just have a 'hater' switch that ignores logic or reason.
I still like film. Even though Believe digital has come a long way and looks really good. I cut my teeth on film. I am learning digital with this camera and finding in the right conditions it's good.
There will always be the film vs video argument but too me the largely subjective quality of video and especially well lit or RED RAW footage wins hands-down and for one reason: affordability.... The fact that I, as a film maker with small budgets can with ease shoot makes me question the practicality of film. Especially when RED is going to get better and more affordable with years to com.
He's a processor- like nearly any engineer. Clearly he is better suited behind the camera, but remember he won an Academy Award at 26 and was nominated in the same year for Best Director of the year twice- 2 films ( Traffic and Erin Brockovich). This is the only second time in history that this has happened. So cut some slack.
"Unlike a digital sensor, a film frame does not have a regular grid of discrete pixels. Rather, it has an irregular pattern of differently sized grains. As a film frame is scanned at higher and higher resolutions, image detail is increasingly masked by grain, but it is difficult to determine at what point there is no more useful detail to extract. Moreover, different film stocks have widely varying ability to resolve detail."
Some of the arguments on here don't make too much sense in my opinion. Digital technology provides so much more convenience at a rapidly decreasing (and largely subjective) loss in quality. 240 frames per second? Why? That kind of upgrade would probably be imperceptible... not to mention the fact that that doesn't present any advantage for 35mm. Past a certain point res. upgrades will also be pointless. Film is nice but don't be so romantic and stubborn about it. Welcome new technology.
The Red One is about 6 times the resolution of current Blu-Ray technology.
The problem with filming using the Red One is that 30 years from now when everything has a resolution of 200,000,000 pixels with 60 billion colors (instead of the 16 million we have today) and 240 frames per second files shot using the Red One will be locked in at the resolution they were made at while films shot using 35mm will be able to be up converted.
you can't upscale digital information. it is either a 1 or a 0. unless maybe if you had an artificial intelligence that was able to "watch" the video and then redraw the movie at a higher resolution. but even then I am sure the AI would prefer to watch a 35mm that contains a lot more information.
Red One will look great on current technology. Probably better then 35mm which is scanned. But 35mm will have the last laugh.
The 5D competes in so many ways, and its so so so much cheaper. The new 24p firmwire update is going to be comeing out soon. the 5D cmos sensor is also bigger then the red.
The 5D is not in competition with the RED. The 5D shoots highly-compressed H.264 in 1080p. This isn't even acceptable for most HDTV broadcast. Yeah, the 5D and 7D are great for amateur filmmakers who want decent footage with a shallow depth of field, but it's not really a professional quality camera by any stretch. Look at a res chart between a RED and a 5D. No comparison.
But even with the red camera, you only exporting the footage to 1080p for HD video and Blue ray in most cases. it not like your watching it in theaters at 4k, plus you also have to think of the bang for the bug, plus the 5d cmos sensor is bigger then the red. im not saying its a better camera altogether, but the 5d, if put together right can compete in many ways.
I guess it came off like I was dumping on the 5D, which isn't the case. Bang for buck it's very good indeed. But don't forget the advantages of downscaling 4k footage to 2k and 1080p for release. The noise is DRASTICALLY reduced from what you'd get shooting natively in 1080p, and it gives you a lot of framing options in post you wouldn't otherwise have. Also, the CMOS might be (slightly) physically bigger than the RED's but it doesn't have more pixels. :)
true true, but i worked for a commercial production company this summer and i have seen several things from the red and 5D, and i didnt feel like there was a whole lot of difference. Both the projects were large spots to. nothing small. I guess each to own. But yes the red is still very nice indeed.
Another thing that makes this cheaper is that you don't need FILM! For a mere 10 minutes of color 35mm film is over 600 bucks. Considering you need 9 times that (for a 90 minute picture), plus 9 times or more than that for screw-ups (shooting ratio), this is a great bargain! Not including, as with film, you also need to have it processed and all that stuff, too. Welcome to the world, RED ONE
I agree - that bald douche's early films were great : sex, lies, and videotape, kafka, the underneath, but now with the sell-out Clooney- Oceans' franchise and his lame cam-corder movies with Mark Douche Cuban, he's clearly lost it.
God I wish I can get one of these at more affordable prices. Perhaps someday. Maybe several. If only consumer level technology would get this good. I love the modular setup of the camera.
This is really cheap as it can get, for what it offers. You still have HDV format and true 24 fps progressive video for less than 800$.... but for Scarlet camera with 3K resolution for around 3500$ is really affordable for most users.

It is, trust me... comparing with the other cameras for shooting features this is soooo mush cheaper! 19.000$ for lenses is something that will not change for a very long time... quality lens is always "expensive".

Absolutely Avoo.
The RED runs at about 2GB per minute, whilst the 5D runs at something like 1/8th of that in a reduced colour space and with line skipping scanning.
Put the 2 up on a big hi resolution screen and you will soon see the differences.

In cinema/TV during the analogue age people were honest about tech spec. Digital is more like a cult with a quasi-religious blind faith.
Imagine a colleague borrows $2000 from you.
Then gives you back $1080 telling you that 80bucks above a grand is the same as 2 grand.
Same with say Blu-ray which we know is 1080
but people call it 2K.
