When Kelly catches a wave he is in prone position with his upper torso and head up and his hips and legs flat on the board; his arms are straight up perpendicular to the board similar to this video. What Kelly does differently is when he stands up he keeps his back leg (right leg) and foot toward the back of the board (does not move this leg forward as shown in this video). He then moves his front leg (left leg) forward: check out Kelly Slater Perfect 10pt ride - 2009 Hurley US Open of surf
thank you so much for making these video's !!! I'm going to rent a surfboard today and just practice. i was going to take a lesson but that was too expensive (100$ for 2 hours) so thank youuu!!
this is probably the worst stand up technique Ive seen in my life, bringin your foot all the way from the back (regardless of ur stance) is anything but time consuming and likely throw you off balance during windy conditions if your are new to it.
i have a question... last weekend was my first time surfing and i have a 6'2 fish. i can almost catch the waves but for some reason my feet go past the tail of the board so it was hard for me to pop up. im 5'8 and 120 pounds can someone tell me what im doing wrong
Yes I think i know what your problem is. On a short board your feet should hang off the back. When you stand up, bring your back foot onto your traction bad and twist slightly. Then use your back foot to push off the traction pad and swing your front leg up. If you are new to surfing then you should start with a longboard until you get good, but that is just me.
if your a new surfer you might like to try a bit larger board perhaps in the 8-9 foot range. The reason is simple...longer boards are more easy to paddle so you gain the needed speed to catch incoming waves and second the larger area of the bigger boards can catch more of the waves energy so you dont need to be on that edge so much. As your skills grow you can turn to shorter boards but for now try a longer one. Above all just stick with it and learn to feel the water under the board :-)
Not all surfers are made equally, so its not critical to learn on a hull. Its basically up to the surfer, learning on a 9ft longboard or a 6ft fish and I can almost guarantee you will learn faster on a fish then on a hull and likely enjoy the process of working your way against the white water while perfecting your duckdive.
If you feel like the board is too wobbly, yes, try something bigger, if its too big for you to move around, go smaller.
yes that is true nothing about surfing is easy nothing at all most people think paddeling is easy put it is not it takes much practise to perfect your paddle i'm still struguling with padeling a bit and i might get sponswered so all i want to say is that paddling is not easy practise and practise whenever you have the chance and exvenchually you'll ghet it ALL :)
im a beginner to surfing and i dont know much, but i do have a question. ive seen alot of different styles when standing up on a board, so theres not one single correct way to do it, right?
i'm not a big fan of his technique i prefer first sliding onto my knees then standing up i find it way easier plus tats d way i was shown by a good surfer!
i appreciate the lessons, really, it seems like he knows his stuff, but if hes not going to do it in the water he should be inside so the oceans not so loud.
