I had to come over and watch this today after watching Peter Gabriel on David Letterman performing the same song 17 years later (November 9, 2011). This time with a 46 piece orchestra. Still making GREAT music after all these years. I hope to see last night's performance on Youtube soon.
Red Rain (SW Live) was the leadoff single from the live compilation "Secret World Live". Even though this is TV truncated, its still a cracking version with some really good guitar work
I see tons of comments about Manu Katché, and to a smaller degree, about Tony Levin and David Rhodes. Virtually nobody mentions keyboardist Jean-Claude Naimro. Perhaps you'd enjoy knowing that it was originally Jean-Claude who recommended Manu to Peter.
Tony Levin is a freak of nature!! What a great bass player! Thank's Bogie for the trip down memory lane. I can remember staying up to see this episode of Letterman, I was such a Genesis, Gabriel fan. Amazing band too! Cheer's....
This is a kick ass version of "Red Rain", man. I've seen Pete twice, and this one really kicks. It is 1994, he was playing it because it appears on the live album that was being promoted... but, I can see why this may be confusing. Also, it is easy to tell it isn't 1986, as in 1986 David Rhodes still had hair! def. 1994.
This is without a doubt 1994. He was promoting the live album "Secret World Live" (you can see Dave hold it up at the very beginning of the clip). I taped this live and the other things on the tape were from 94. I'm stoked so many people have enjoyed seeing this old video.
You are correct about the Late "Show" vs Late "Night" with David Letterman in defining a time line. However I find it impossible to believe that Gabriel, as an artist, would be performing 8 year old material as opposed to material from "Us" which in 1994 would been his current release.
@Dendog It easily can be - going to commercial @ 3:57 you can see a "Late *Show* With David Letterman" bumper, which clearly wouldn't have existed in 1986.
This is definitely in support of Secret World, c. 1994. What also gives it away is the fact that Manu Katche is playing a set of Yamaha Maple Custom drums... a set that wasn't around until the '90s!
BTW, this was a fantastic performance. Peter and his band at the time were among the world's finest.
what I think is amazing is that when I first heard some recent recordings I thought his voice got that good as he got older - it was actually that good all the time :p!
Unbelievable TV peformance; Haunting, mesmerizing. The tightness of the band; their stage presence; all on the same page; I find myself drawn in; the constant melody in my head. Perhaps Peter's finest hour.
Yes, this song was certainly from "So" (1986). Clearly this performance was not 1986 though. I'd say 1994 was pretty close to being right...as the description says.
@boojiray - Micheal Delugg had mixed almost every music performance on Letterman since his morning show until the 2001 or so. He would have mixed this. This case is the opposite of garbage in, garbage out.
I have to agree with Cygnus. This song was never released until the album SO which came out in 1986. The first live performance of this song was at the Amnesty International benefit concert in 86.
this is most definitely 1994. look at the disc that letterman is holding up at the beginning. it's secret world live. plus david rhodes had plenty of hair back in 1986.
This is after the secret world live tour in '94, you could see the CD release in Letterman's hand, wich is the released double audio CD from that tour. :-)
the band was in prime force for this appearance. listen to the applause of the audience. one of my favorites of PG's live performances. bravo. too bad it was a TV edit version.
They inducted Justin Timberlake for Pete's sake. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE?!!!!
What is he, like, 25? And playing generic Hip-Hop/ R & B?!!! Hardly, what I'd call, the Elvis of his generation. More like a New Kid on the Block with better packaging.
The Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame is about as geniune as Woodstock '92. No wonder the Sex Pistols game them the finger.
i had to giggle at that....he has always laid back a biiiiit too much. I love him but if I was PG i would have definitely sealed a contract with Vinnie between '86 and '94. I wonder if he and Sting ever argued about that....
Excellent performance! Funky & lively with that group! Too bad the version was cut short a bit (guess it was because they were performing on TV). Good stuff though...
Thats weird to see this now I am his age that he was here, weird. I have accomplished nothing comparable to this man, he is soooooooooo good, God bless him, cause I wanna hang out in heaven with him and Sting and Keanu Reeves!

Taken into account that the "reggae" drummer Copeland always played rock accents, the hihat was played with 2 hands, the Linn drum=funky and Daniel Lanois made a heavy all-in-1 sound, the track seemed hard to play live. Sill Peter performs the song all the time and Manu drums amazingly.
Mr Letterman must have been stunned! This is THE line up for Secret World Live. On tour Manu played that weird Stewart Copeland groove in his own style as good as the studio take on SO. And mr Levin with the funk fingers banging so brilliant. Peter Gabriel and this band will still amaze anyone for the next centuries.
