  • god damn that swing and in live performance!!!! Pure dynamite!

  • thank you so much for uploading this

  • thank you..an amazing talent I have enjoyed for over thirty years, and for thirty years more!

    His music NEVER gets old!

  • @jennyinjapan Great news, the latest video is posted. Fantastic to play each one after another. I think I like the latest one better.

They won't let me post a link. Just search for Peter Gabriel Letterman

  • I had to come over and watch this today after watching Peter Gabriel on David Letterman performing the same song 17 years later (November 9, 2011). This time with a 46 piece orchestra. Still making GREAT music after all these years. I hope to see last night's performance on Youtube soon.

  • @gt3dug sorry I missed it!

  • Tony Levin! Also Also pure genius!

  • Thanks for the upload !

  • How can a song be more emotional than this?

  • Super! Super! Super Amazing! Thanks for uploading this. Been a fan of Peter Gabriel since I was 8yrs old :-D

  • Wow Peter dident age very well!

  • @amapunker76 remember what Phil Collins looked like in '94? ;)

  • @amapunker76 yes he did punk! He's 62.

  • Always and forever a Peter Gabriel fan. Thank you for uploading this.

  • ''WOW' I'm dancing behind the computer..grate song and as far as the drummer goes""""YOU GO BOY"""" nice job!!!!

  • @TheGreeneyes777 -- I know what you mean! This is a great performance! Peter has such an amazing voice. Peace2U, Alex

  • 8-9-1994, it would seem.

  • it;'s nice to be able to hear Larry's guitar so clear in this mix

  • @jockamofeena - David's guitar sound great too. ;) Who's playing Keys on this?

  • @PragueFanity - Yeah! Check out those very early Matchless DC30's.

  • Try Asian women # oneman4u.info #

  • Any news on Peter's new album?

  • Red Rain (SW Live) was the leadoff single from the live compilation "Secret World Live". Even though this is TV truncated, its still a cracking version with some really good guitar work

  • more than this?

  • Jerry Marotta ( Peter's first drummer )....even MORE of a genius !

  • WOW! What a performance!! Shit hot!! David gets his Steinberger on TV again!

  • He is so cool. Walks on so casual to lay down an amazing track.

  • I see tons of comments about Manu Katché, and to a smaller degree, about Tony Levin and David Rhodes. Virtually nobody mentions keyboardist Jean-Claude Naimro. Perhaps you'd enjoy knowing that it was originally Jean-Claude who recommended Manu to Peter.

Katché owes Naimro his international career.

  • Brilliant. Too bad he had to truncate it for teevee.

  • Tony Levin is a freak of nature!! What a great bass player! Thank's Bogie for the trip down memory lane. I can remember staying up to see this episode of Letterman, I was such a Genesis, Gabriel fan. Amazing band too! Cheer's....

  • DarkeningSkies1 is correct, I watched when it aired... he was promoting his live album. Great version :)

  • Gabriel's looking around at his bandmates with a well sense of pride, and deservingly so. A great performance by all.

  • This is a kick ass version of "Red Rain", man. I've seen Pete twice, and this one really kicks. It is 1994, he was playing it because it appears on the live album that was being promoted... but, I can see why this may be confusing. Also, it is easy to tell it isn't 1986, as in 1986 David Rhodes still had hair! def. 1994.

  • Love Peter Gabriel and Tony Levin, great video.

  • Manu Katche is inspired on this---playing with so much passion and authority.

  • This is without a doubt 1994. He was promoting the live album "Secret World Live" (you can see Dave hold it up at the very beginning of the clip). I taped this live and the other things on the tape were from 94. I'm stoked so many people have enjoyed seeing this old video.

  • You are correct about the Late "Show" vs Late "Night" with David Letterman in defining a time line. However I find it impossible to believe that Gabriel, as an artist, would be performing 8 year old material as opposed to material from "Us" which in 1994 would been his current release.

  • FYI This can't be from1994 as is stated below. Gabriel would not be playing this tune on Letterman 8 years after its' release.

  • @Dendog It easily can be - going to commercial @ 3:57 you can see a "Late *Show* With David Letterman" bumper, which clearly wouldn't have existed in 1986.

  • tony levin......

  • Thank you Bogie

  • wow wow

  • This is definitely in support of Secret World, c. 1994. What also gives it away is the fact that Manu Katche is playing a set of Yamaha Maple Custom drums... a set that wasn't around until the '90s!

BTW, this was a fantastic performance. Peter and his band at the time were among the world's finest.

  • what I think is amazing is that when I first heard some recent recordings I thought his voice got that good as he got older - it was actually that good all the time :p!

  • Unbelievable TV peformance; Haunting, mesmerizing. The tightness of the band; their stage presence; all on the same page; I find myself drawn in; the constant melody in my head. Perhaps Peter's finest hour.

  • Yes, this song was certainly from "So" (1986). Clearly this performance was not 1986 though. I'd say 1994 was pretty close to being right...as the description says.

  • I love this song so much!

  • Their sound is amazing...normally groups sound very bad on the letterman stage...this is great.

  • @boojiray - Micheal Delugg had mixed almost every music performance on Letterman since his morning show until the 2001 or so. He would have mixed this. This case is the opposite of garbage in, garbage out.

  • that new covers Cd is fantastic , many mellow songs . not all. Peters magic touch. SCratch MY Back.... you big fans will love it.

  • Manu, Manu!!

  • i love yamaha electric grands

  • It's amazing, his voice still sounds exactly the same!

  • I have to agree with Cygnus. This song was never released until the album SO which came out in 1986. The first live performance of this song was at the Amnesty International benefit concert in 86.

  • manu katche is so sick on this!

  • he is the bee's knees man. he makes those yamaha's sound so perfect

  • the NEW Peter Gabriel album "SCRATCH MY BACK" - out middle of February in Europe and Canada, beginning of March in the USA : )

  • this is most definitely 1994. look at the disc that letterman is holding up at the beginning. it's secret world live. plus david rhodes had plenty of hair back in 1986.

  • Well done -- thanks for posting. Absolutely great performance.

  • Peter Gabriel = Pure Genius

  • @markm0918

    Peter Gabriel = Pure Geniusis

  • Whoops, surround mix? Can't hear vocals.

Tony Levin on bass! That guy has some serious job security.

  • Bogie....fyi... this is 1986...

  • No it's not. It's from 1994, I remember it clearly. The song is from So, which was released in 1986, but the performance was 1994.

  • I taped this on VHS the night it aired. He was up for a Grammy that week...that's why the performance. Dig it!

  • Great live version. Play it loud. Thanks.

  • i miss those times where we can actually hear quality music and not listen to politicians or how many chains u have on ur neck

  • thank you for posting....gonna watch this three times a day!

  • No matter what version of hear of this song, it all sounds amazing.

  • this drummer is awesome...he really adds another dimension to this song.

  • The drummer is Manu Katché, french amazing drummer !

  • Manu Katche! Also pure genius!

  • @dbevents Tony Levin Geeeeeeeeeeeniuuusssssss!

  • Bene, questo mi mancava!!!

  • Manu Katche is awesome.

  • toooooony leeeeevin (8)

    fuckin' great!!!

    Cheerz from Argentina!

  • 2:48 is just too cool

  • que peaso de cancion con 4 acordes...Peter...shure forever

  • Based on his appearance I'd say this is actually from 86 or 87, not 94. That's an 80s jacket if I ever saw one.

  • This is after the secret world live tour in '94, you could see the CD release in Letterman's hand, wich is the released double audio CD from that tour. :-)

  • You're right. I couldn't figure out which disc that was before but I can see it now. Thanks.

  • Good eye on the cover art and time frame my brother!!

  • nah couldnt have been the 80s. Letterman didnt take the show until late 89.

  • This is so kick ass I can't stand it.

  • Brilliance. Genius. Thank you for uploading.

  • Red Rain is a sonic adventure around surrealist poetry. Terrific song.

  • This is one serious song!

  • ...massive piece of music; and my favourite edition of PG's band(s)...superb version. Gabriel is a shaman. much thanks to the uploader.

  • thx for uploading sir

  • This song is Fucking Legend.

    Peter Gabriel for Emperor.

  • the band was in prime force for this appearance. listen to the applause of the audience. one of my favorites of PG's live performances. bravo. too bad it was a TV edit version.

  • That was good.

  • Thanks for posting this!!

  • What a great bassline in this song from Tony Levin.

  • I love this great song. Thanx for uploading!! XD

  • "Red Rain" (the live-version form "Secret World Live") was nominated for a GRAMMY-award in 1995 in the category "Best Rock Vocal Performance".

This song is one of Curt Smith`s (The Cure) favourite songs from the 80ies.

  • Don't you mean Rob Smith?

  • I LOVE THAT STEINBERGER!!!! (the rest is great as well of course :)

  • A wonderfully funky version! Saw Peter do this at WOMAD recently, his voice so much deeper but as excellent as ever.

  • Why isn't PG in the rock and roll hall of fame? don't make sense

  • The Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame is a freakin' joke.

They inducted Justin Timberlake for Pete's sake. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE?!!!!

What is he, like, 25? And playing generic Hip-Hop/ R & B?!!! Hardly, what I'd call, the Elvis of his generation. More like a New Kid on the Block with better packaging.

The Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame is about as geniune as Woodstock '92. No wonder the Sex Pistols game them the finger.

  • Don't think Justin Timberlake was inducted. You aren't eligible until 25 years after your first record.

  • You're right. He inducted Madonna last year.

I still think they could've chosen a more worthy presenter.

  • Amazing. Thanks for sharing this, it's awesome.

  • this is great! ;) while watching this, i was wondering what The Red Hot Chili Peppers would sound like doing this song.

  • Permiso para postear un comentario femenino...

Increible lo bonito que esta Peter en este video!!!! ;-p

  • manu katche man, manu katche ...

  • manu is the master, I want him back to Peter and see them live again

  • Comment removed

  • Love Peter!!!! He´s something!!!!!!!!!!

  • Epic.

  • O.M.G. Levin's Bass line is so freaking hot ... Tony Levin OWNS this song ... Peter's voice is also excellent ...

  • Great performance of this song. Peter's voice and Manu's beats. Wow.

  • He was great with Genesis and he is great solo.

  • pete's great an everything... betcha he even wipes is ass great after taking a dump :)

  • I get chills when i hear this song. I remember watching him when i was in first grade; I kept asking my mom why he was singing about hammers.

His voice truely is one of the best.

  • Peter et ses meilleurs musicos...Ils sont tous au top du top dans ce morceau et hommage à Manu qui est le plus grand !

  • so i just wanted to say in my oppinion he's the best drummer on earth.^^

  • totally agree. manu's the shit! this song never sounds as good when anybody else is behind the drums.

  • right.i saw him on a concert in Darmstadt (Germany) and just thought HOLY SHIT!!!!!

  • manu kicks ass.nothing about vinnie, but manu is a great drummer and also a very nice guy.

  • PG sounds good here. But Tony Levin's bassline OWNS!

  • The 1st live-performance after the last concert of the "Secret World-Tour" `93/`94 at Woodstock `94. Check out David`s guitar-lines.

  • Wow... I love this song. Great performance. He's excellent live. ^_^ Awesome stuff. 5/5

  • Oh, it's Manu. I knew it was dragging for some reason, hehe. Sorry.

  • i had to giggle at that....he has always laid back a biiiiit too much. I love him but if I was PG i would have definitely sealed a contract with Vinnie between '86 and '94. I wonder if he and Sting ever argued about that....

  • Who's the drummer?

  • Great song by Gabriel Peter

  • Great vocals on this song!! Peter did a fantastic job on this live version of "Red Rain"! 5 stars!! Peace, Kim

  • Mamma mia che voce, che brano, che musicisti... DA PAURA....!!!! I love this song!!!

  • his voice has not changed up to know... 5 stars

  • there is nothing else like this anywhere. gb is god!

  • Great stuff!!!

    Thank you so much!

  • i've got a skinny guitar and a huge shirt!

  • Bogie, you are a hero!!!!! Thanks!!!!

  • Very good job my friend.... Peter is always good live and thanks to you he lives on!!!!!

  • fabulous vid, thank you very much, fan of Pete since 69

  • good version tks for posting this video

  • Peter is an absolutely incredible performer. His voice got better with age, IMHO.

    Rock on, Peter!!!!

  • Excellent performance! Funky & lively with that group! Too bad the version was cut short a bit (guess it was because they were performing on TV). Good stuff though...

  • Great! Tony Levin is so nice! Gotta love this lineup!

  • my Peter. never failes to impress me, loving the dedication!

  • Damn, he left out the best line "I can't watch anymore, no more denial" where he really pushes his voice.

    Still a great clip though

  • God Bless you!

I taped this but the tape deteriorated

This was right after that "Woodstock festival" of that year

PLEASE if you have it you should post this with the 3-5 minutes Peter talks with Dave after the Red Rain performance. It's very nice and funny

  • peter gabriel looks like my friend Jimmy from when i was growing up. I have no clue where he is these days :(

  • Thats weird to see this now I am his age that he was here, weird. I have accomplished nothing comparable to this man, he is soooooooooo good, God bless him, cause I wanna hang out in heaven with him and Sting and Keanu Reeves!

  • Someone should post the video; It's not the best, but this song is my personal favorite track from the "So" album.

  • Tony Levin... just.. WOW..

  • that guy is just scary. i saw him play with his band once in this tiny little place and i was literally afraid.

  • Thats one of the best songs he did, one of the best ever actually. This is a good verson

  • I am looking forward to get another red rain

  • You are right. There are 2 drummers and a Linn programmer for the song: Jerry Marotta, Chris Hughes and Stewart Copeland. Copeland imitated the rain drops with his hi hat. We might add Daniel Lanois as the master of a drum sound I've never ever heard.

  • Actually Jerry Marotta played drums on the original. Stewart Copeland played the hi hat.

  • Peter is GOD...So perfect ...so sweet

  • Cool tune...from the "So" album (1986)...though this performance is obviously much later...early to mid 90's as the description says.

  • Yeah, Letterman is holding up his "Secret World Live" CD.

  • Ah yes...didn't catch that the first time. That would make this 1992 then.

  • Manu Katché

  • Peter has always been so present on stage: wherever, whenever, ... I can just compare him with my all-time favorite Jon Anderson.

  • Tony Levin is a beast.

  • Freakin' beautiful!! He is the master. What great sound in this video and and looks great too. Thanks for posting

  • Is the stage on the Letterman Show always RED or is it just for this song?!?!

  • i agree there bittertasteinmen, they are not playing crazy solos and still sound amaizing.

  • Fuck soulja boy, fuck britney, fuck the goverment long live Peter. Red Rain is pourin down me...............

  • LOVE Peter's facial expression when he enters the stage! It's like "Hey, how's it going? Let's get this baby off the ground" in a very casual and laid back sort of way :)

  • Damn you're beautiful Peter!

  • i love peter gabriel.

My family thinks hes a true artist with music.

But with this,im kinda dissapointed with the guitarist.

Im a guitarist myself. And i think he could've done better.

  • Eh, David Rhodes could probably play circles around you son. The difference between a good guitar player and a true artist is knowing when to be heard, and when to let others be heard. It's not about how many notes you can hit, but in the timing that you hit them. 2 notes can sound tons better than a crappy solo thrown in.

  • David Rhodes is a very tasty player. This song doesn't need anything that he doesn't play. Watch The "Secret World Live" dvd. Enough said

  • and then along came crap like briteny spears and soulja boy :(

  • Sweet lord ! That was amazing !!

    WT

  • Let me think.... I need a rhythm section, who should I chose?

  • Man, Manu's groove...simply amazing...

  • In my opinion Manu is the best drummer in the world. But there is something about the Red Rain drums. On SO, it is a combination of Chris Huges Linn drumm programming and a hihat overdub of Stewart Copeland. Taken into account that the "reggae" drummer Copeland always played rock accents, the hihat was played with 2 hands, the Linn drum=funky and Daniel Lanois made a heavy all-in-1 sound, the track seemed hard to play live. Sill Peter performs the song all the time and Manu drums amazingly.

  • Man, this grooves like a mother! Awseome

  • Mr Letterman must have been stunned! This is THE line up for Secret World Live. On tour Manu played that weird Stewart Copeland groove in his own style as good as the studio take on SO. And mr Levin with the funk fingers banging so brilliant. Peter Gabriel and this band will still amaze anyone for the next centuries.

  • OMG! I love love love it. His face when he walks in is so cute. And the performance is cool. I like his voice here even more. PG we love you!

  • PG is the best :)

  • great, slower rendition, his voice sounds great too, perfect mix and performance! its
